Implementation of Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis for Hybrid Vehicle SystemsShoults, Lucas Wayne 07 July 2016 (has links)
An increase emphasis has been placed on the automotive industry to develop advanced technology vehicles which meet increasing strict government regulations and standards for emissions and fuel economy while maintaining the safety, performance, and consumer appeal of the vehicle. In response to these requirements, hybrid and electric vehicle technologies have become more complex as the necessity for vehicles with an overall better environmental impact. Modern engineers must understand the current methods used to analyze and evaluate risk with the new hybrid technologies to ensure the continued customer satisfaction and safety while meeting new government and agency standards.
The primary goal of this work is to maintain consistent definitions, standards, and protocols for risk analysis using design failure modes and effects analysis. Throughout the entire automotive sector there exist standards for risk analysis and methods for analysis, however these models can be difficult to relate to the atmosphere under which educational competitions occur. The motor system case study within this work aims to allow the process for DFMEA to be simple and easily implemented and understood when it is appropriate to start. After defining the model, an electric motor system for hybrid vehicle is analyzed for mechanical and inverter system risks. The end result being a 32% reduction in motor system risk due to recommended actions for mitigating top motor systems risks for future motor system design and implementation, all to meet customer requirements. This work aims to provide an additional tool that when implemented will accelerate the next generation of automotive engineers. / Master of Science

Processkartläggning i samband med verksamhetsflytt : En fallstudie på SAAB Training & Simulation och SAAB Avionics Systems spedition- och ankomstprocesser / Process mapping in the context of operation movement : A case study on the forwarding and arrival process of SAAB Training & Simulation and SAAB Avionics SystemsRådegård, Tobias, Oscarsson, David January 2016 (has links)
Resultat - Studien mynnar ut i två processkartor. / Purpose - The purpose of this thesis is to study how two separate operations; SAAB Training & Simulation and SAAB Avionics Systems, are managing forwarding and arrival processes. This in order to investigate the background of what have framed the processes and thereby enable them to corporate on a common goods reception starting 2017. Further, this study includes organizational suggestions on how the integrated goods reception should be managed. Method - A comparison between the two companies were made by conducting a process map on each of the operations. This approach was conducted in accordance with the principles of a case study. By continuously collecting data throughout in-depth interviews, a clear connection to the purpose was ensured. Further, a literature review was conducted in order to connect reality to current theories, and thereby present legitimate suggestions. Findings - This study propose two process maps. The first one focus on how SAAB should manage their goods reception from an organizational perspective, immediately after SAAB Avionics move their operations. Contrary to the first, the second process map aims to present a solution during a five year-period of time. Both maps include recommendations and concrete suggestions on how this should be done, as well as what companies should take into account when designing forwarding and arrival processes in general. Implications - Because of how the result is distributed between two time periods, the first time frame could only be regarded as applicable, as these are the results that have been used to create a functioning flow. The implications and results regarding the second time frame could thereby be seen as a pre-study, or suggestions for future research on the basis of the company’s own incentives. Delimitations - Due to the exhaustive character of conducting a full analysis of the common goods reception, this study is delimited to how this process should be managed from an organizational perspective. Key terms - Goods reception, moving of an operation, process mapping, forwarding and arrival processes, customer requirements.

Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) is a commonly adopted method for designing a product with a high level of quality, starting with the design of the product or process, so that it is designed or planned without error, without the need of improvement in subsequent stages of the product development process (PDP). The objective of this work is to suggest a framework for the application and implementation of DFSS in PDP. The research method adopted was divided into two stages. First, a systematic bibliographic review was done and afterwards, the theoretical framework developed was evaluated in a large company that uses the DFSS method for more than three years. The main characteristics of this framework developed and evaluated are: the synthesis of specific methods and tools for the application and implementation of the DFSS in the PDP, following the step by step of the DMADV model of the DFSS with the description of the main objectives of each phase of the method. The results of the research presented that the use of the DFSS finds some barriers, and verified that not all tools of the method are used in organizations because they are too complex. The work presents a new framework based on the analysis of the organization with the tools and methods applied by this company.

Dessutom har relevant litteratur ifrån vetenskapliga artiklar, böcker, myndigheter samlats in. / For companies today to be competitive, high quality, delivery capability and flexibility are required. Olhager (2013) believes that continuous improvement of company strategies, products and processes becomes necessary. The Lean tool value stream mapping can be used to identify waste and improve productivity (Rahani & al-Ashraf, 2012). This study analyzes how a global industrial company that manufactures for the nuclear power industry can increase its efficiency despite regulations from standards and customer requirements. To study this, observations have been made on the company's production flow, then four interviews have been carried out to get a good picture of the company's material and administrative flow and current situation. In addition, have relevant literature from scientific articles, books, authorities been collected. The case company's products must meet the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code product standard and other customer specification requirements, covering manufacturing, inspection, quality assurance, testing and shipping. In order to manufacture for the nuclear power industry, companies need to follow strict quality requirements and there is an extensive amount of documentation and sampling. The company in this study has previously used value flow analysis to analyze smaller parts of the flow, but the company sees potential for wider use. The conclusions of this study are that standards such as the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code are important for nuclear safety. The standard places high demands on the manufacturing, where several quality controls must be carried out to prevent defects. This can make the manufacturing process more complex and time-consuming compared to other industries. As the company in this study has an extensive administrative flow that follows along with the material flow, there are many parts to have control over. Using value flow analysis and analyzing a larger part of the flow provides an overall picture and the opportunity for a common understanding of the flow's limitations. To carry out effective improvements, it is important to agree on what the flow looks like and where the bottlenecks are that limit the flow. Based on the needs of the company in this study, value flow analysis is, according to the theory, an appropriate tool to use to navigate their improvement efforts and increase efficiency.

Mechanical processing for improved products made from Swedish hardwoodJohansson, Jimmy January 2008 (has links)
Swedish hardwood is today used in the energy, pulp and mechanical hardwood industries. Only very small volumes of Swedish hardwood are, however, consumed by the mechanical industry that normally pays the highest timber price. The smallness of the volumes used for mechanical refinement is a result both of forestry not focusing on the production of hardwood for these uses, and of the fact that the mechanical hardwood industry, particularly the sawing industry, is not designed to process the existing raw material in an optimal manner. This thesis discusses the possibilities of improving the conditions for the mechanical refinement of hardwood. The aim of the work has been to investigate the possibilities of developing products and methods for processing of Swedish hardwood. The thesis proposes a new manufacturing system for Swedish hardwood to better utilize the inherent properties of the wood material. The system is based on the so-called PrimWood Method and the star-sawing concept. Compared to normally sawn wood, the sawing concept utilizes the raw material more efficiently with regard to volume yield, and increases the distance between knots in the sawn wood. The material produced has vertical annual rings which give the wood smaller movements as a result of moisture variations and a different textural appearance. Using the PrimWood Method for hardwood would make it possible to more closely match customer requirements regarding hardwood products. Since Swedish hardwood is nowadays mainly used indoors, a possible way of expanding the market would be to increase the outdoor use of the material. Here the durability is of great importance, and one important factor is then the capillary characteristics of the material. The thesis therefore focuses on the characterisation of the capillarity in wood for the future improvement of its durability. It is shown that with the material produced by the proposed manufacturing system, i.e. wood with vertical annual rings, the possibility of using hardwood outdoors increases, because the susceptibility to cracking decreases.

Benchmarking educational web portals : an application of the Kano methodMacDonald, Catherine Ann 30 March 2010 (has links)
The Kano method1 was used in order to determine the benchmark requirements of an educational web portal. A comprehensive list of possible specifications for an educational portal was constructed by examining the characteristics of educational portals globally. This information was used to develop a questionnaire in accordance with the Kano method. A number of hand-picked expert users were asked to answer the questionnaire. The results obtained from these questionnaires were used to categorize the importance of each component of a web portal as a “one-dimensional”2 , “must-be”3 or “attractive”4 requirement. The components categorized as “must-be” requirements were used to generate the benchmark of the minimum specifications of an educational web portal.
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are widely used by both large and small businesses. Still, the adoption of these systems can be a costly and difficult process that has traditionally demanded appropriate and adequate knowledge within the organization. Nonetheless, as a consequence of growing societal digitalization, a modernization of ERP systems has ensued, resulting in a shift toward cloudbased ERP systems. Cloud-based ERP systems typically provide faster and more efficient implementation and maintenance. The cloud-based solutions also introduce new risks, vulnerabilities, and possibilities that influence how and where requirements may and should be imposed on business systems, as well as which requirements are applicable. As such, the research question of this study, How does the transition towards an increasing use of cloud-based business systems affect the requirements that customers place on business system suppliers?, aims to analyze how the shift toward cloud-based business systems affects the demands and requirements imposed upon them. A better grasp of these factors intends to be of help to ERP system suppliers in order to match customer requirements and desires in an ever-changing market. To address the research question a survey was conducted and five semi-structured interviews with individuals with substantial knowledge in the subject were undertaken. Thematic analysis was used to examine the interviews, which yielded six overarching themes and 14 sub-themes. The results suggest that the requirements on suppliers have followed the trend towards cloud-based solutions to some extent. Customers appear to have begun to appreciate the benefits of standardized deliveries with a reduced degree of customization as well as the fact that, as a result of the development, they must define new types of security and data access requirements. Yet, the analysis revealed that despite the aforementioned requirement adaptation, clients keep setting the same kind of expectations that they did when implementing on-premise ERP systems. Moreover, customers lack an understanding of how cloud-based ERP systems vary from on-premise solutions in terms of security and adaptability, which is not necessarily represented in their requirements.
