The two essays that comprise this thesis use personal narrative to discuss various aspects of illness, resistance and the body. The first essay uses performance theory to explore the social structures, mandates and restrictions concerning illness. I use the cancer experience to explore the co-creation of self, identity, and modes of being between "performer" and "audience." "Performer," in this case, is the "breast cancer patient," and the "audience" is comprised of the "social others.” The second essay explores cyborgization of the body, its painful effects, and associated social and moral values. It also discusses how we create theory and understanding of self through fiction, media and experience.

Muhammad Ali Khan Abstract August 31, 2012 Machine integration into human life: Mankind & Cyborgization Embracing technology and its utilization has always been a certain goal for human beings so it would provide benefits in long run through different ways. However access to such knowledge not only helps mankind to prosper but also reveals its dark side in form of a dilemma. My paper explores the same subject of scientific knowledge as a dilemma to human life while providing its advantages at the same time. In order to explain my claim in detail, my paper is actually based on a comparison between the novel Cyborg by Martin Caidin and the film Gamer by Mark Neveldine & Brian Taylor. This comparison is divided in two parts where the first part enlightens extension of human body with help of science and its physical & psychological effects, in reference to the novel. The second part focuses more on the rising issues due to adaptation of technology into human life by following the movie. The explanation in both parts contains events from the novel and film and connects them with each claim. Extending the claim, my digital artifact is a visual demonstration and performance at the same time. Providing a fictional example, the artifact demonstrates an advance from of virtual identity of mine and my dependence on it which explores the rising issue of lost human identity in cyberspace. This diploma thesis focuses on the definition of cyborgization and to delimit it. The cyborgizatoon of body is one of the ways of human improvement next to gene manipulation and neuromanipulation. It is difficult to express the specific definition because the experts have a different point of view, what for thesis shows various point of view -- both technooptimistic and technopesimistic -- and it tries to find the most suitable definition. People do not want to admit the cyborgization is not only vision of distant future but all of us are the cyborgs practically. What for the thesis deals with various cyborgization methods using in practice or developing to apply them in practice in a short time.
