Contribuição ao projeto estrutural de cilindros em compósitos para armazenamento de oxigênio sob alta pressão / A contribution to the structural design of composite cylinders for high-pressure oxygen containment

Neste trabalho são analisados os aspectos relacionados à otimização estrutural de cilindros de alta pressão em compósitos, a partir do estudo detalhado dos procedimentos de cálculo analítico, utilizando o método análise de rede (netting analysis), juntamente com procedimentos baseados em análise numérica pelo método dos Elementos Finitos, considerando modelos de comportamento ortotrópico do material compósito. São considerados cilindros utilizados para armazenamento de oxigênio, fabricados pelo processo de enrolamento filamentar (filament winding), comparados a cilindros confeccionados em metal quanto à sua aplicabilidade. Após análise de diferentes estudos de caso, conclui-se que os materiais compósitos podem ser aplicados com sucesso em cilindros de alta pressão, desde que estabelecidos alguns parâmetros decisivos ao projeto estrutural do vaso, tais como: critério de falha mais adequado; determinação de dados experimentais dos materiais utilizados; normas e códigos utilizados no projeto e dados da geometria final do vaso, dependentes do processo de fabricação. Propõe-se também a utilização de um ambiente integrado das atividades de projeto e fabricação do compósito. / In this work the aspects related to the structural optimization of composite high-pressure cylinders are analyzed from the thorough study of analytical calculation, by the use of netting analysis, along with procedures based on numerical analysis by the Finite Element method, considering models of composite materials with orthotropic behaviour. Cylinders used for oxygen containment, manufactured by filament winding process, are considered and compared to the cylinders manufactured in metal in terms of their application. The analyses of different case studies allowed to conclude that composite materials can be applied successfully in high pressure cylinders provided that some critical parameters have been established to the vessel structural design, such as: an adequate failure criteria; determination of experimental data for the composite materials used; standards and codes used in the design and the final vessel geometry data, dependent variables of the manufacturing process. An integrated environment of the design and manufacturing activities is proposed as well in order to embrace all of these aspects.

Micromechanics modeling of the multifunctional nature of carbon nanotube-polymer nanocomposites

The present work provides a micromechanics approach based on the generalized self-consistent composite cylinders method as a non-Eshelby approach towards for assessing the impact of carbon nanotubes on the multi-functional nature of nanocom-posites in which they are a constituent. Emphasis is placed on the effective elastic properties as well as electrical and thermal conductivities of nanocomposites con-sisting of randomly oriented single walled carbon nanotubes in epoxy. The effective elastic properties of aligned, as well as clustered and well-dispersed nanotubes in epoxy are discussed in the context of nanotube bundles using both the generalized self-consistent composite cylinders method as well as using computational microme-chanics techniques. In addition, interphase regions are introduced into the composite cylinders assemblages to account for the varying degrees of load transfer between nanotubes and the epoxy as a result of functionalization or lack thereof. Model pre-dictions for randomly oriented nanotubes both with and without interphase regions are compared to measured data from the literature with emphasis placed on assessing the bounds of the effective nanocomposite properties based on the uncertainty in the model input parameters. The generalized self-consistent composite cylinders model is also applied to model the electrical and thermal conductivity of carbon nanotube-epoxy nanocomposites. Recent experimental observations of the electrical conductivity of carbon nanotube polymer composites have identified extremely low percolation limits as well as a per-ceived double percolation behavior. Explanations for the extremely low percolation limit for the electrical conductivity of these nanocomposites have included both the creation of conductive networks of nanotubes within the matrix and quantum effects such as electron hopping or tunneling. Measurements of the thermal conductivity have also shown a strong dependence on nanoscale effects. However, in contrast, these nanoscale effects strongly limit the ability of the nanotubes to increase the thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite due to the formation of an interfacial thermal resistance layer between the nanotubes and the surrounding polymer. As such, emphasis is placed here on the incorporation of nanoscale effects, such as elec-tron hopping and interfacial thermal resistance, into the generalized self-consistent composite cylinder micromechanics model.

Wave Interactions with Arrays of Bottom-Mounted Circular Cylinders: Investigation of Optical and Acoustical Analogies

Wave scattering by arrays of cylinders has received special attention by many authors and analytical solutions have been derived. The investigation of optical and acoustical analogies to the problem of interaction of water waves with rigid and flexible cylinder arrays is the main focus of this thesis. In acoustics, a sound may be attenuated while it propagates through a layer of bubbly liquid. In fact, if the natural frequency of the bubbles is in the range of the wave periods, the attenuation becomes more evident. The ultimate objective of the research described herein is to determine if this phenomenon may also be found in the interaction between water waves and arrays of flexible cylinders. In a first approach, arrays of rigid cylinders are studied in shallow water. The array is treated as an effective medium, which allows for the definition of reflection and transmission coefficients for the array, and theories from Hu and Chan (2005) associated with the Fabry-Perot interferometer are compared against direct computations of wave scattering using the commercial code WAMIT. Reflection and transmission coefficients from WAMIT are evaluated by applying a Maximum Likelihood Method. The results from WAMIT were found to be in good agreement with those obtained from the effective medium theory. Due to observed inconsistencies for short wave periods and small incident angles, the effective width of the medium is defined and corrected. For the case of a flexible cylinder, generalized modes corresponding to deformations of the cylinder's surface are formulated and added to WAMIT's subroutine. Equations of motion are derived from the theory of vibration for thin shells and mass and stiffness matrices are defined. The objective is to maximize wave attenuation from the array of flexible cylinders. Therefore, the natural periods of the "breathing" mode for these cylinders is set in the range of the studied wave periods. Then, material properties, as well as mass and stiffness matrices, are chosen to achieve this effect.

Expansion of perturbation theory applied to shim rotation automation of the Advanced Test Reactor

In 2007, the Department of Energy (DOE) declared the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) a National Scientific User Facility (NSUF). This declaration expanded the focus of the ATR to include diversified classes of academic and industrial experiments. An essential part of the new suite of more accurate and flexible codes being deployed to support the NSUF is their ability to predict reactor behavior at startup, particularly the position of the outer shim control cylinders (OSCC). The current method used for calculating the OSCC positions during a cycle startup utilizes a heuristic trial and error approach that is impractical with the computationally intensive reactor physics tools, such as NEWT. It is therefore desirable that shim rotation prediction for startup be automated. Shim rotation prediction with perturbation theory was chosen to be investigated as one method for use with startup calculation automation. A modified form of first order perturbation theory, called phase space interpolated perturbation theory, was developed to more accurately model shim rotation prediction. Shim rotation prediction is just one application for this new modified form of perturbation theory. Phase space interpolated perturbation theory can be used on any application where the range of change to the system is known a priori, but the magnitude of change is not known. A cubic regression method was also developed to automate shim rotation prediction by using only forward solutions to the transport equation. / text

Despite the huge national energy resources, many Nigerians do not have access to high quality, modern energy services. For those with access, energy supply lacks reliability, especially in the case of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Hence this research considers the possibility of enhancing the household use of LPG. It analyzes the factors affecting the current demand and supply. Salient features of the LPG supply and distribution system were also discussed. On the basis of the existing situation, barriers of increasing LPG use, in particular, the problems regarding affordability, priCing, government poliCies, safety, transportation and distribution were analyzed and identified statistically using the chi-square statistical method as a tool. Finally, on the basis of the challenges identified, suggestions and recommendations were made regarding the policies through which the problems could be overcome.
