Distributed optimization under partial information using direct interaction: a methodology and applications

Kim, Sun Woo 25 April 2007 (has links)
This research proposes a methodology to solve distributed optimization problems where quasi-autonomous decision entities directly interact with each other for partial information sharing. In the distributed system we study the quasi-autonomy arising from the assumption that each decision entity has complete and unique responsibility for a subset of decision variables. However, when solving a decision problem locally, consideration is given to how the local decisions affect overall system performance such that close-to-optimal solutions are obtained among all participating decision entities. Partial information sharing refers to the fact that no entity has the complete information access needed to solve the optimization problem globally. This condition hinders the direct application of traditional optimization solution methods. In this research, it is further assumed that direct interaction among the decision entities is allowed. This compensates for the lack of complete information access with the interactive exchange of non-private information. The methodology is tested in different application contexts: manufacturing capacity allocation, single machine scheduling, and jobshop scheduling. The experimental results show that the proposed method generates close-to optimal solutions in the tested problem settings.

The study on the methanol crossover in a DMFC

Lai, Jhih-jia 09 September 2008 (has links)
In this experiment, we are going to discuss the possibility of zero methanol crossover to the cathode target within the capacity of DMFC electrode and with proper methanol supply. After various trials, it is found that electrospray can be used to reduce fuel demand. The methanol will be consumed immediately within the electrode capacity. The methanol solution is volatile. As a result, the actual amount of electricity generated will never accord with the input. If we supply the electrode with methanol by direct contact using infusion pump, the volatility will be reduced. The total power generated then accords with the amount of methanol input. Although only low methanol concentration is supported currently, it¡¦s hoped that the crossover problem can be solved completely. In the electrode design, we try to take away the carbon cloth from the anode and leave the catalyst layer. By this way, the methanol is in touch with the catalyst. Such change is good for this experiment. In our study, following difficulties are found: (1) Methanol input (2) The impact of volatility in electrospray (3) When supplying fuels to the surface of electrode, the reaction size is too small. More attentions should be paid in the future cell design.

FDI and Currency Crises : Currency crises and the inflow of FDI

Rydqvist, Johan January 2005 (has links)

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse if there are any changes in the inflow of Foreign Direct Investments before, during and after a currency crisis. The thesis is based on a theoretical framework and has an empirical part, which use a regression equation.

The theoretical framework presents a foundation of the incentives to mak FDI investments and the implications for a host country. Together with the possible link to the level of the real exchange rate in the host country, this thesis, based partly on previous paper written on the subject, presents a regression equation for an empirical analysis. The regression equation is based on a hypothesis about the changes in FDI inflow before, during and after the occurrence of a currency crisis in the host country.

The empirical analysis presents different results concerning the link between FDI and a currency crisis. The hypothesis stated in the thesis is that a currency crisis influences FDI inflows. This hypothesis is rejected. Moreover, a currency crisis can have both positive and negative effects on the inflow of FDI for the selected countries.

Results find further no similarities in regions or year of occurrence of the currency crises. The depth, length and structure of each currency crisis together with using the right definition of a currency crisis are two important factors relating to the outcomes in this study.
