DATA COMMUNICATIONS OVER AIRCRAFT POWER LINES

Tian, Hai, Trojak, Tom, Jones, Charles 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2005 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-First Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 24-27, 2005 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / This paper introduces a study of the feasibility and initial hardware design for transmitting data over aircraft power lines. The intent of this design is to significantly reduce the wiring in the aircraft instrumentation system. The potential usages of this technology include Common Airborne Instrumentation System (CAIS) or clock distribution. Aircraft power lines channel characteristics are presented and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is introduced as an attractive modulation scheme for high-speed power line transmission. A design of a full-duplex transceiver with accurate frequency planning is then discussed. A general discussion of what communications protocols are appropriate for this technology is also provided.

Labidi, Chafik 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)

Towards Controlling Latency in Wireless Networks

Bouacida, Nader 24 April 2017 (has links)
Wireless networks are undergoing an unprecedented revolution in the last decade. With the explosion of delay-sensitive applications in the Internet (i.e., online gaming and VoIP), latency becomes a major issue for the development of wireless technology. Taking advantage of the significant decline in memory prices, industrialists equip the network devices with larger buffering capacities to improve the network throughput by limiting packets drops. Over-buffering results in increasing the time that packets spend in the queues and, thus, introducing more latency in networks. This phenomenon is known as “bufferbloat”. While throughput is the dominant performance metric, latency also has a huge impact on user experience not only for real-time applications but also for common applications like web browsing, which is sensitive to latencies in order of hundreds of milliseconds. Concerns have arisen about designing sophisticated queue management schemes to mitigate the effects of such phenomenon. My thesis research aims to solve bufferbloat problem in both traditional half-duplex and cutting-edge full-duplex wireless systems by reducing delay while maximizing wireless links utilization and fairness. Our work shed lights on buffer management algorithms behavior in wireless networks and their ability to reduce latency resulting from excessive queuing delays inside oversized static network buffers without a significant loss in other network metrics. First of all, we address the problem of buffer management in wireless full-duplex networks by using Wireless Queue Management (WQM), which is an active queue management technique for wireless networks. Our solution is based on Relay Full-Duplex MAC (RFD-MAC), an asynchronous media access control protocol designed for relay full-duplexing. Compared to the default case, our solution reduces the end-to-end delay by two orders of magnitude while achieving similar throughput in most of the cases. In the second part of this thesis, we propose a novel design called “LearnQueue” based on reinforcement learning that can effectively control the latency in wireless networks. LearnQueue adapts quickly and intelligently to changes in the wireless environment using a sophisticated reward structure. Testbed results prove that LearnQueue can guarantee low latency while preserving throughput.

Stress corrosion cracking of welded duplex stainless steel joints: four point bend and drop evaporation test of synthetic sea water.

Pereira, Henrique Boschetti 26 October 2018 (has links)
The present investigation characterized the welded joints of a UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel plate using different welding energies (0.5 kJ/mm, 1.0 kJ/mm and 3.5 kJ/mm) in order to evaluate the susceptibility of these joints to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in Cl- environments. Drop evaporation test (DET) of synthetic seawater was used to assess the SCC behavior of the welded joints and to investigate the effects of the temperature (70 ºC, 90 ºC and 110 ºC) and the tensile strength (70%, 90% and 100% of the base metal\'s yield strength) on their SCC resistance. The results of the mechanical, intergranular corrosion susceptibility and microstructural characterization of the welded joints did not show the presence of deleterious phases, such as ? and ? phases. Additionally, the proportion of ferrite phase in the molten zone and in the heat-affected zone was inversely proportional to the welding energy. For instance, the ferrite in the HAZ varied from 68% for 0.5 kJ/mm to 54% for 3.5 kJ/mm. The results of SCC testing showed the cracking and fracture for all specimens tested at 110 ºC (even at 70% of the yield strength), while no cracking was observed at 70 ºC and 90 ºC. DET performed at 90 ºC showed that there was a localized and preferential corrosion of the ferrite phase far away from the weld bead, while DET performed at 70 ºC did not show any significant sign of corrosion. All samples tested at 110 ºC presented a noteworthy salt deposition in the shape of a volcano and their cracks were formed underneath the salt layer by the pit corrosion of the ferrite phase. The cracks propagated by either ? / ? interfacial or transgranular cleavage at ferrite and austenite phases. For lower stresses, the proportion of transgranular cleavage of the ferrite phase was more significant than the austenite phase. DET was not an efficient test to investigate the effect of the microstructural changes in the HAZ on the SCC susceptibly of the welded joints as the crack took place below the salt deposit and away from the weld bead. The temperature distribution analysis on the surface of the DET samples indicated that the seawater drip has a significant cooling effect and the temperature of this region was at least 10 ºC lower when compared to other regions of the samples. Additionally, the pH on the drip region was more basic (pH = 11) than the synthetic seawater solution (pH = 8.2). Keywords: Duplex stainless steels; stress corrosion cracking; synthetic seawater; welding.

Orientation relationships resulting from austenite formation from ferrite in duplex stainless steel.

Monlevade, Eduardo Franco de 19 December 2002 (has links)
Duplex Stainless Steels have a structure composed by ferrite and austenite. The fact that austenite, in these steels, is stable at low temperatures, allows the use of these steels in studies of austenite formation from ferrite, in such way that the results can be applied to low alloy steels, in which austenite transforms to martensite upon rapid cooling, and to other systems containing transformations between body-centred cubic (BCC) and face-centred cubic (FCC) phases. Studies were performed on a DIN W.Nr. 1.4462 (UNS 31803) duplex stainless steel. The samples were solution treated in the ferrite region at 1325°C and water cooled. Samples were then submitted to isothermal treatments at temperatures between 700°C and 1100°C for up to 30.000 seconds. In this way, austenite formation from ferrite was studied on initial and advanced stages of the reaction, concerning morphological and crystallographic aspects. The morphologies observed varied with the grain boundary segment in which the particles were formed. The grain boundary particles may be adequately described by the Dubé classification. Moreover, these particles presented Kurdjumov-Sachs and Nishyiama-Wassermann orientation relationships with at least one of the adjacent grains, with possibilities of occurrence of intermediate relationships between K-S and N-W relationships. In some cases, the particles show orientation relationships with both adjacent grains, with small deviations form the exact relationships reported in literature. Intragranular austenite particles show higher deviations from the exact relationships than grain boundary particles. In some cases, intragranular particles have no apparent orientation relationships with the ferrite matrix.

Study of the weldability of lean duplex stainless steel UNS S82441 using the MIG/MAG process with different welding energies.

Pauli, Evandro Armini de 24 November 2017 (has links)
Duplex stainless steels are Fe-Cr-Ni-Mo-C alloys, which have a balanced microstructure composed of 50% of ferrite and 50% of austenite, approximately. They combine good mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance. These steels are classified according to their chemical composition. A recent class is the lean duplex stainless steels having lower content of Ni and Mo. The weldability of lean duplex steels, like UNS S82441, is worse than that of austenitic and duplex steels of different types. The objective of this work is to study the influence of the variation in welding heat input on lean duplex stainless steel UNS S82441 weldability. GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) was used to weld plates with 100 x 300 x 6.1 mm. The filler metal was ER2209 according to AWS standard A5.9; and shielding gas with 98% Ar + 2% O2 using welding heat inputs of 0.71; 0.98 and 1.42 kJ/mm. Welded joints and base metal were microstructurally characterized using techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), quantitative metallography, X-rays diffraction of, analysis by backscattered electrons diffraction (EBSD), analysis by differential calorimetry s and dilatometry . The joints and the base metal were characterized with respect to their mechanical properties and corrosion resistance using the following tests: Microhardness test, Charpy V Impact test and corrosion test by Scanning Vibrating Electrode Technique (SVET). Through image analysis with an Optical Microscope it was observed that there was an unbalanced microstructure for all welding heat inputs. The SEM showed the existence of secondary phases, confirmed by X-rays diffraction and by the Thermo-calc® program. Higher values of ferrite and austenite microhardness were observed in the heat affected zone and in the fusion zone in the case where low welding energy was used. The corrosion resistance of these specimens was analyzed using the local Vibratory Electrode Scanning Technique (SVET). It was observed that the variation of the welding heat input influences the corrosion in the different zones around the weld beads, during the time of exposure of the specimens. The weld bead with the lowest welding heat input was the one that suffered the highest corrosion intensity and the sample welded with the highest welding energy presented the lowest corrosion intensity.

DNA-based logic

Bader, Antoine January 2018 (has links)
DNA nanotechnology has been developed in order to construct nanostructures and nanomachines by virtue of the programmable self-assembly properties of DNA molecules. Although DNA nanotechnology initially focused on spatial arrangement of DNA strands, new horizons have been explored owing to the development of the toehold-mediated strand-displacement reaction, conferring new dynamic properties to previously static and rigid structures. A large variety of DNA reconfigurable nanostructures, stepped and autonomous nanomachines and circuits have been operated using the strand-displacement reaction. Biological systems rely on information processing to guide their behaviour and functions. Molecular computation is a branch of DNA nanotechnology that aims to construct and operate programmable computing devices made out of DNA that could interact in a biological context. Similar to conventional computers, the computational processes involved are based on Boolean logic, a propositional language that describes statements as being true or false while connecting them with logic operators. Numerous logic gates and circuits have been built with DNA that demonstrate information processing at the molecular level. However, development of new systems is called for in order to perform new tasks of higher computational complexity and enhanced reliability. The contribution of secondary structure to the vulnerability of a toehold-sequestered device to undesired triggering of inputs was examined, giving new approaches for minimizing leakage of DNA devices. This device was then integrated as a logic component in a DNA-based computer with a retrievable memory, thus implementing two essential biological functions in one synthetic device. Additionally, G-quadruplex logic gates were developed that can be switched between two topological states in a logic fashion. Their individual responses were detected simultaneously, establishing a new approach for parallel biological computing. A new AND-NOT logic circuit based on the seesaw mechanism was constructed that, in combination with the already existing AND and OR gates, form a now complete basis set that could perform any Boolean computation. This work introduces a new mode of kinetic control over the operation of such DNA circuits. Finally, the first example of a transmembrane logic gate being operated at the single-molecule level is described. This could be used as a potential platform for biosensing.

Infrainguinal Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty in Limbs with Severe Lower Limb Ischaemia

Löfberg, Anne-Marie January 2001 (has links)

Infrainguinal bypass grafting is an established method in the treatment of patients with femoropopliteal and crural occlusive disease leading to critical lower limb ischaemia (CLI). However, complications related to surgical procedure are not negligible and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) has emerged as an alternative. The present thesis covers some aspects of infrainguinal PTA in patients with chronic severe lower limb ischaemia.

The records of 217 patients undergoing 272 PTA procedures at various infrainguinal arterial segments were analysed. The indication for intervention was subcritical ischaemia in 76 limbs and critical ischaemia in 177 limbs. The role of duplex ultrasound examination in the selection of patients for PTA was retrospectively evaluated following a prospective validation of the method against angiography.

A technically successful PTA was achieved in 89%. The overall 30-day mortality was 2.7%. No patient underwent amputation directly related to failed PTA. The primary success rates at 12 and 60 months following femoropopliteal PTA were 40% and 27% compared, to 51% and 36% in limbs undergoing crural artery PTA. Primary success rate in limbs with SFA occlusion longer than 5 cm was only 12% after 5 years, compared to 32% if the occlusion was equal or less than 5 cm in length (p<0.01). In patients undergoing distal PTA through patent infrainguinal grafts, the primary and primary assisted patency rates at 3 years were 32% and 53%, respectively. The sensitivity of duplex scanning in the selection of lesions for PTA was less satisfactory in the popliteal and crural arteries compared to the superficial femoral arteries.

In conclusion, the results of infrainguinal PTA performed for treatment of subcritical or CLI seemed to be inferior to the results of surgical interventions reported in the literature. However, due to the fact that the PTA procedure does not preclude the performance of bypass grafting, it might be an alternative to surgical intervention in limbs with stenotic or short occlusive lesions.

Varicose Veins : Aspects on Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment

Blomgren, Lena January 2005 (has links)

Treatment for varicose veins (VV) is insufficiently evidence based and recurrence rates are high. The aim of this thesis was to study the long-term results after VV surgery, risk factors for recurrences and the effect of preoperative duplex scanning on recurrence rate, quality of life (QoL) and costs.

In a follow-up study 89 patients with 100 legs operated on for VV 6–10 years earlier were re-examined with duplex, in 13 cases also with varicography. 57% had incompetent vessels in the groin visible with duplex, equally well defined by varicography. Residual branches could not be differentiated from new vessel formation. The recurrence rate did not correlate to the surgeon’s level of experience or perioperative difficulties at primary surgery.

In a prospective randomized study 293 patients (343 legs) were operated on for primary VV with or without preoperative duplex. Duplex was done postoperatively, at 2 months and 2 years. QoL was measured with SF-36 preoperatively, at 1 month, 1 year and 2 years.

After 2 years the number of reoperations were 2 in the group with preoperative duplex and 14 in the group without (p=0.002). Incompetent veins were seen in the saphenofemoral or saphenopopliteal junction in 19 and 53 legs respectively (p<0.001).

Preoperative QoL was worse in the VV patients compared to a reference population, and was normalised 2 years postoperatively. The improved surgical result in the duplex group was not reflected in a significantly higher QoL.

The lower costs for redo surgery in the duplex group did not offset the costs for duplex, partly due to more extensive primary surgery.

A significant proportion of recurrences after 2 years was new vessel formation and progression of disease. Preoperative perforating vein incompetence did not influence recurrence rate, and was abolished without specific interruption in 60% at 2 years postoperatively.
