The design of CAN nodes for minimising cables on the SUNSAT's TCMD system

Musetha, Rendani D. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis is to investigate a design of a microcontroller based embedded system that will be used to minimise cable harness on the SUNSAT micro-satellite. The system is called CAN node. The CAN node(s) implements CAN (Controller Area Network) serial bus architecture protocol. The protocol is implemented on the two nodes to transport data from the TCMD tot he 0 ther trays 0 f SUNSAT. CAN node( s) design proj ect focuses on the TCMD tray, because it is the central point for data communication in SUNSAT and it acts as the eyes and hands of the satellite's operator. As a result most of the communication cables are located at this tray. The two nodes are called TX-node and RX-nodes. The TX-node is used to collect data from the TCMD tray and transmits them serially to RX-node. The RX-nodes receives the TCMD data from TX-node and transmits these data to their respective nodes. In application RX-nodes need to be ten, but only one is used for testing purpose. The design had its shortcomings, of which they are discussed in this thesis. The recommendations of an ideal system are also given to elaborate how the system should behave in the real situation. Despite its shortcomings, the CAN node(s) project has successfully proven that cable harness on the TCMD tray of SUNSAT can be minimised by using CAN technology. Die CAN nodus implementeer die CAN (Controller Area Network) bus argitektuur protokol.

Slotted time based protocol and polling strategies for low speed, narrow band applications

Ragadza, Ntakadzeni Ronald 10 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates and develops some aspects of low speed wireless telemetry applications. The system configuration is one of a single master, controlling and communicating with multiple slave stations over a radio network. The aim of this thesis is to develop a narrow band wireless communications network based on a protocol with slotted time base, utilizing standard, off the shelf hardware. The idea is to investigate different strategies for improvement of data throughput performance under conditions of both low- and high loading, using this basic protocol. Such strategies may, amongst others include collision detection, flow control and pre-scheduling algorithms. This thesis will also show the how the non-adaptive system's data throughput performance can be improved using an adaptive system under low- and high loading. Half-duplex communication mode will be used for data communication.

Encryption-based security for public networks : technique and application

Fernandez, Irma Becerra 10 October 1994 (has links)
This dissertation describes the development of a new system whereby the Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN), which is not secure, can perform like a private network. Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) forms a technical platform for other communication technologies, such as frame relay and Switched Megabit Data Service (SMDS). This is an original and innovative hardware and software design which can be embedded into the ISDN Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) to privatize the public ISDN without the need to upgrade the existing switching equipment. This research incorporates original design and development of the following hardware and software modules to provide real-time encryption and decryption of images and data in the ISDN medium: 1. ISDN Communications Module with customized Caller-ID access. 2. Token Access Control module for secure log-in. 3. A Hybrid Cryptographic Module, public key for key management and authentication, and private key for privacy. This Cryptographic module, the Security Extension Module to the Terminal Adapter (SEMTA), was implemented in software, and then optimized in hardware. This work proves that medical images and legal documents can be transmitted through the PSTN without any security breach, guaranteeing the privacy, confidentiality, and authenticity of the data.

Couto, Ayrton Benedito Gaia do January 2008 (has links)
This study deals about decision-making with replicated and inconsistent data, relating to the universe of Human Resources, within a domestic/local financial institution. Replication occurs because of technical and/or economic questions, and seeks to meet corporate and departmental requirements of such an institution. As research methodology, direct observation of such inconsistencies was used as well as a simulation based on actual data which would reflect replication with inconsistencies. Application of a multi-criteria method became necessary in view of the need to render the decision-making process rational, and was transformed into an element that stimulated this study. The method used was the Rough Set Theory (RST), inasmuch as there existed no other information on the occurrence of such inconsistencies. An algorithm was developed to indicate the major data sources and was subsequently implemented into a software to facilitate research of such sources. Application of the RST proved to be a useful tool for the company in question, within other possible solutions, for the purpose of preventing any unwanted consequences of decision-making with replicated and inconsistent data. / Dissertação (mestrado) - Programa de Pós-Graduação em Administração e Economia, Faculdades IBMEC, Rio de Janeiro, 2008. / Bibliografia: p. 81-84.
