Virtual Full Replication for Scalable Distributed Real-Time Databases

A fully replicated distributed real-time database provides high availability and predictable access times, independent of user location, since all the data is available at each node. However, full replication requires that all updates are replicated to every node, resulting in exponential growth of bandwidth and processing demands with the number of nodes and objects added. To eliminate this scalability problem, while retaining the advantages of full replication, this thesis explores Virtual Full Replication (ViFuR); a technique that gives database users a perception of using a fully replicated database while only replicating a subset of the data. We use ViFuR in a distributed main memory real-time database where timely transaction execution is required. ViFuR enables scalability by replicating only data used at the local nodes. Also, ViFuR enables flexibility by adaptively replicating the currently used data, effectively providing logical availability of all data objects. Hence, ViFuR substantially reduces the problem of non-scalable resource usage of full replication, while allowing timely execution and access to arbitrary data objects. In the thesis we pursue ViFuR by exploring the use of database segmentation. We give a scheme (ViFuR-S) for static segmentation of the database prior to execution, where access patterns are known a priori. We also give an adaptive scheme (ViFuR-A) that changes segmentation during execution to meet the evolving needs of database users. Further, we apply an extended approach of adaptive segmentation (ViFuR-ASN) in a wireless sensor network - a typical dynamic large-scale and resource-constrained environment. We use up to several hundreds of nodes and thousands of objects per node, and apply a typical periodic transaction workload with operation modes where the used data set changes dynamically. We show that when replacing full replication with ViFuR, resource usage scales linearly with the required number of concurrent replicas, rather than exponentially with the system size.

Multi-Master Database Replication and e-Learning – Theoretical and Practical Evaluation

Detta examensarbete har undersökt möjligheterna att kombinera multi-master databasreplikeringstekniker tillsammans med en LEMP-stack på små servrar för att öka tillgängligheten av e-Learning tjänster i avlägsna områden i Tanzania. Målet var att utvärdera kombinationen av Symmetric DS för databas synkronisering och kollitionsdetektering och resolution med e-Learning systemet Moodle. Detta gjordes genom att en litteraturstudie genomfördes och uppföjdes av implementation och konfiguration på plats i Tanzania. Slutsatsen var att de för projektet utvalda teknologierna, mjukvaran och hårdvaran var konfigurerbar i teorin men ohållbart kostsam att implementera i praktiken. / This research has investigated the possibility to combine multi-master database replication technologies together with a LEMP-stack on tiny servers to increase the availability of e-Learning services in remote areas in Tanzania. The aim was to evaluate the combination of Symmetric DS for multi master database replication and conflict detection and resolution with the e-learning system Moodle. This was done by conducting a literature study of relevant technologies followed by implementation and configuration at the location. The conclusion was that the technologies, software and hardware chosen for the project were configurable in theory but not viable to implement and maintain in practice.

On the Consistency, Characterization, Adaptability and Integrity of Database Replication Systems

Desde la aparición de las primeras bases de datos distribuidas hasta los actuales sistemas de replicación modernos, la comunidad de investigación ha propuesto múltiples protocolos para administrar la distribución y replicación de datos, junto con algoritmos de control de concurrencia para manejar las transacciones en ejecución en todos los nodos del sistema. Muchos protocolos están disponibles, por tanto, cada uno con diferentes características y rendimiento, y garantizando diferentes niveles de coherencia. Para saber qué protocolo de replicación es el más adecuado, dos aspectos deben ser considerados: el nivel necesario de coherencia y aislamiento (es decir, el criterio de corrección), y las propiedades del sistema (es decir, el escenario), que determinará el rendimiento alcanzable. Con relación a los criterios de corrección, la serialización de una copia es ampliamente aceptada como el más alto nivel de corrección. Sin embargo, su definición permite diferentes interpretaciones en cuanto a la coherencia de réplicas. En esta tesis se establece una correspondencia entre los modelos de coherencia de memoria, tal como se definen en el ámbito de la memoria compartida distribuida, y los posibles niveles de coherencia de réplicas, definiendo así nuevos criterios de corrección que corresponden a las diferentes interpretaciones identificadas sobre la serialización de una copia. Una vez seleccionado el criterio de corrección, el rendimiento alcanzable por un sistema depende en gran medida del escenario, es decir, de la suma del entorno del sistema y de las aplicaciones que se ejecutan en él. Para que el administrador pueda seleccionar un protocolo de replicación apropiado, los protocolos disponibles deben conocerse plena y profundamente. Una buena descripción de cada candidato es fundamental, pero un marco común es imperativo para comparar las diferentes opciones y estimar su rendimiento en un escenario dado. Los resultados presentados en esta tesis cumplen los objetivos establecidos y constituyen una contribución al estado del arte de la replicación de bases de datos en el momento en que se iniciaron los trabajos respectivos. The scope of this thesis is to design tools to support business processes on mobile platforms. The work deals with both the Enterprise Resource Planning systems issue, as well as the database synchronization and the possibilities of secure data transmission between the mobile device and the server. The work also includes familiarization with the most widely used mobile platforms and tools for multi-platform application development. The last part of the thesis comprises a model of an application meant to support business processes on mobile devices, including a description of its implementation, used tools and testing.
