Bonassi, Edna Celeste Vieira 20 September 2010 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the teaching of globalization as course content in the final year of primary level education. The study endeavors to bring to light how globalization is understood at the theoretical level, however, it mainly focuses on how globalization is inserted into the everyday experience of students, how it is expressed in their day-to-day lives and the dialectic processes that arise therein, with the purpose of taking advantage of the contextual conditions of this subject matter and how it is delivered in Geography classes. The concept for this study arose from the contradictions and paradoxes evident in the behavior of students with regards to their possession and use of the latest generation technological devices, and also from the difficulties that we, as teachers, face in teaching this subject. Thus, the aim of this study concerns the possibility of contextualizing the subject of globalization from a dialectic perspective, considering the variables that constitute it: the technological, cultural, political, economic and social dimensions, which overlap each other in everyday life. Beforehand, however, part of the study is dedicated to the comprehension of youths and their position in the context of globalization, and how it is received in their experiences and daily life. At the beginning of this new century, youths are living in the \"perpetual present\", a world fragmented by a plethora of images, signs and meanings; the present time is an apparently unique moment, detached from the past and with supposedly no link to the future. Youth as a condition is laid out in the moulds of economic rationality and is exposed to globalization through senses that are oriented towards the consumer market at this socio-historical and cultural junction, when signs, products and culture take the form of merchandise and delineate a type of behavior defined by immediatism and ephemerality. The students relationships with the context are demonstrated by the replies they gave in questionnaires containing both closed-ended and open-ended questions. Accordingly, comprehension of the formative elements of globalization is necessary, in this case technology and consumption stand out, the latter with a cultural connotation, as a result of the emphasis given to merchandise comprising of signs, images and goods that, in general, take on new meaning in the process, like citizenship linked to the consumption rights at the service of capitalism. This dialectic process is apparent in the relationship between the teaching and learning of globalization, aimed at the formative development of the student. Accordingly, interviews with teachers are emphasized, with the purpose of ascertaining how the subject of globalization is articulated in the final year of primary level education, with the intention of making evident the difficulties that these professionals face with regards to the subject, when they are confronted by relevant issues, and to propose suggestions. In turn, the promotion of this subject is the axis for possible suggestions to compose the articulation of globalization as subject matter in the dialectic movement of the dimensions it takes on, with the purpose of favoring the teaching and learning of this complex subject. Furthermore, it is necessary to make the content relevant from the standpoint of the reality experienced by these youths and to contribute to a more conscious manner of thinking and educating the student in the development of citizenship.

Entre VigilÃncias e Ilegalismos: cotidiano e prÃticas policiais do Ronda do QuarteirÃo no Cearà / Between surveillances and ilegalisms: The Ronda do QuarteirÃo daily life and police practices.

LetÃcia de Sousa AraÃjo 30 August 2013 (has links)

Factors Affecting Faculty Morale in Seventh-day Adventist Tertiary Institutions

Tagai, Kuresa, School of Education Studies, UNSW January 1999 (has links)
Using a multimethod approach, this study set out to examine the concept of faculty morale - what it is, what affects it, and how to improve it - in the setting of the four South Pacific tertiary institutions owned and run by the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church. Based on three research questions and three major expectations, the study, done between October 1997 and March 1998, was carried out in two stages representing the two models of research - quantitative and qualitative. The study confirmed the multi-faceted and complex nature of morale as well as the close relationship between this concept and that of job satisfaction. While faculty morale appeared better in some institutions than others, the data reported in this study indicate that faculty morale overall seemed to have suffered due to a variety of factors. Most notable among these was the perceived leadership style of senior administrators as manifested through a range of activities and attitudes comprising their willingness or otherwise to share power with the faculty, to follow a satisfactory process of consultation, to allow adequate academic freedom, to promote faculty participation and representation in institutional policy- and decision-making, and to communicate openly with academic staff. Faculty satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the above and other aspects of their senior administrators' leadership style, along with their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with other aspects of their work, were the principal factors linked to faculty morale. The surprising absence of a significant relationship between faculty morale and a religious-oriented commitment among SDA faculty members suggests that religious commitment and morale may, to a large extent, operate independently of each other. Although religious commitment was shown to be very solid among SDA faculty members, the study indicates that this type of commitment has its limits and may be unrelated to commitment to a particular institution. Implications of these findings were drawn out for administrators of the SDA Church in the South Pacific and the on-site administrators and faculty at each of the four institutions studied. The study also contributed to the theoretical understanding of the concept of morale and proposed areas for further research.

Influences of riparian canopy on aquatic communities in high desert streams of eastern Oregon

Tait, Cynthia K. 12 September 1997 (has links)
Because riparian canopy controls most energy inputs to stream ecosystems, it directly affects the structure of aquatic food webs and the ecological processes that govern interactions among trophic levels. This study addresses the interdependence among riparian canopy, benthic community structure, and the carrying capacity of high desert streams for salmonid fishes. In streams in the lower John Day River Basin in eastern Oregon, algal, invertebrate, and fish communities were compared in reaches with varying densities of riparian canopy. Water temperatures varied with the density and upstream extent of canopy. Densely canopied sites were cool, while sites with high irradiances had temperatures exceeding the upper lethal limit for salmonids. Periphyton and grazer biomasses were greater in well-lighted sites, but 90% of grazer biomass consisted of Dicosmoecus gilvipes, a large caddisfly inedible by juvenile trout. Warmer water increased metabolic demands for salmonids, while the overwhelming dominance of Dicosmoecus in open sites shifted energy flow away from trout and shrunk their food base. High water temperatures, however, provided suitable habitat for many warmwater fishes which would otherwise not enter tributaries of this size. At higher elevation study sites in Camp Creek, light levels were higher and less variable than at the lower sites. Periphyton and invertebrate abundances were not correlated with irradiance. Rather, periphyton was maintained at low levels by grazers, particularly Dicosmoecus and snails. Manipulations of fish densities in enclosures showed that trout and dace had no negative impacts on numbers of invertebrate prey, and that grazers played a larger role in regulating lower trophic levels than did fish. Dicosmoecus acted as a keystone species in the benthic food web of Camp Creek by simultaneously influencing the trophic level both below and above its own. When irradiance was experimentally reduced under artificial canopies, periphyton standing crops were not different from those in open control pools after 4 wks. However, grazers were more abundant in open pools. The cropping of periphyton to uniform levels in both sunlight and shade indicated that mobile grazers targeted sites of varying productivities. Comparisons between benthic communities in Camp Creek and in a densely canopied reference stream suggested that benthic community structure shifted to accommodate changes in energy resources that occur when canopy density is altered. / Graduation date: 1998

The Changing Culture of Fatherhood and Gender Disparities in Japanese Father's Day and Mother's Day Comic Strips: A 55-Year Analysis

Yasumoto, Saori 12 January 2006 (has links)
LaRossa, Jaret, Gadgil, and Wynn (2000, 2001) conducted a content analysis of 495 comic strips published on Father’s Day and Mother’s Day in the United States from 1945 to 1999 in order to determine whether the culture of fatherhood and gender disparities in the media had changed over the past half-century. Drawing on their research, I conducted a similar kind of analysis of 246 comic strips published on Father’s Day and Mother’s Day in Japan from 1950 to 2004. By comparing and contrasting the results in the two studies, I show how comic portrayals of families have changed in Japan and in the United States, and demonstrate the value of analyzing comic strips in cross-national research.

The behavior of stock price on ex-dividend day : A study on New York Stock Exchange and London Stock Exchange

Islam, Md. Amirul, Chowdhury, Biplob, Islam, Md. Amirul January 2011 (has links)
The main aim of this thesis is to analyze the behavior of stock price on ex-dividend day in London Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange and draw a conclusion about the market efficiency based. We collect 200 sample companies dividend, ex-dividend day and cum dividend day stock price to compare with NYSE composite index and FTSE 100 for London Stock Exchange.   To answer the research question and specific purpose of our thesis we developed five null hypothesis based on raw price ratio (RPR), market-adjusted price ratio (MAPR), raw price drop ratio (RPD), market-adjusted price drop ratio (MAPD) and market-adjusted abnormal return (MAAR). We used t-statistic to find the mean differences between observed values and standard values. We also show multiple regression analysis to show the relationship between ex-dividend day stock price and dividend, cum-dividend day stock price.   This thesis documented that same amount of stock price drop in 2008 New York Stock Exchange compare with dividend amount. In this case our null hypothesis accepted. On the other hand in London Stock Exchange shows higher drop of stock price than dividend amount in 2008 against the taxation rate rules of prior study. In 2007 both stock market shows the less drop of stock price than dividend amount. Therefore our null hypothesis rejected. We also documented that London Stock Exchange more volatile than New York Stock Exchange to consider the MAAR, tax rate and standard deviation. So we find significant evidence of market abnormal return which create an opportunity of market inefficiency and arbitrage opportunity for investors.   So, our thesis output shows mixed evidence for London Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange.
