A Description of the Types, Availability and Teachers' Knowledge of Children's Literature in Six Selected Child Care Centers

Kretchun, Christine Haas 12 1900 (has links)
Twenty-four teachers completed questionnaires and demographic data forms to describe the types of books they chose most often, where they got them, how they selected them, and how important they felt it was to expose children to good literature. A criteria sheet was used to describe the types and currency of books in each center. The teachers used a variety of sources to select and obtain books. Most teachers knew how literature aids some aspect of development. Every type of book was represented in all collections, but poetry and wordless picture books were least represented.

A Comparison of the Expectations of Parents, Staffs, and Directors Concerning Children's Activities and Parent and Staff Roles in Three Day Care Centers

Leslie, Candace D. 08 1900 (has links)
Expectations in six areas of concern were explored by means of a questionnaire distributed to parents, staffs, and directors of three day care centers. These included physical setting, educational activities, social development, staff relationships with children, staff relationships with parents, and parent relationships with the center. Responses averaged over 50 per cent in each category of respondent. Analysis showed that although there were areas of almost total agreement, there were a number of statements that demonstrated a wide divergence in the expectations of the respondents. This study and the related literature indicate that there is cause for concern that children's needs for consistency in child-rearing practices are not always being met.

"Prevalência de anemia ferropriva em crianças matriculadas em duas creches municipais de Guarapuava - PR.2005" / "Prevalency of iron deficiency anemia in children registered two municipal day-care centers of Guarapuava - PR. 2005"

Kmetiuk, Silvana Franco 17 October 2005 (has links)
The present study it had as objective to describe the prevalence of iron deprive anemia in children registered two municipal day-care centers of Guarapuava - PR, in the year of 2005. Transversal cut is characterized as seccional or, of prevalence and population base, involving 156 children with lower age the six years registered the municipal day-care centers of the urban zone of the city. To characterize the studied population information together to the fiches had been gotten register in cadastre in the day-care centers on relative variable the child: date of birth and sex. For measuring of the dosage of sanguine hemoglobin, samples of blood in the tip of the average finger had been collected, for portable reading in hemoglobinometer (Hemocue). The prevalence of the anemia in the studied daycare centers was of 42.9%, or either 67 of the 156 children where if determined the concentration of hemoglobin with the lower values 11 g/dl. The prevalence for the feminine sex was of 42.3%, or either, between the 71 girls, 30 of them had presented concentration of hemoglobin with lower values 11g/dl and for equal the masculine sex 43.5%, or either, between the 85 boys, 37 of them had presented concentration of hemoglobin with lower values 11g/dl. Amongst the 67 children with anemia, 25 (37.3%) children had presented serious anemia, being that in the group of the 30 girls with anemia, 10 (33.3%) had presented serious anemia and in the group of the 37 boys with anemia, 15 (40.5%) had presented serious anemia. Still in the 67 children with anemia 45 (67.2%) they presented lower age the 24 months, being that in the group of the 30 girls with anemia, 21 (70%) presented lower age the 24 months and for the group of the 37 boys with anemia, 24 (64.9%) presented lower age the 24 months. Amongst the 25 children with serious anemia, 17 (68.0%) presented lower age the 24 months, being that for the group of 10 girls with serious anemia, 9 (90%) presented lower age the 24 months and, for the group of 15 boys with serious anemia, 8 (53.3%) presented lower age the 24 months. Some factors can have contributed for this result. One of them is the nutricional state of the children before entering the infantile schools, which could already be engaged. Another important factor to be considered is low the partnereconomic insertion of the children who frequent municipal day-care centers, which imposes life conditions that become them more vulnerable the diarrhea, to the respiratory infections and the intestinais parasatisms, being able to compromise, of marcante form, the food consumption for reduction of the appetite and reduction of the absorption of nutrients between them the iron. One expects that the results supply to subsidies one better knowledge and accompaniment of the nutricional situation of these children, since they constitute essential instrument for the gauging of the conditions of health of the infantile population, besides offering in general measured objective of the conditions of life of the population.

Estimulação na creche: efeitos sobre o desenvolvimento e comportamento da criança / Stimulation in Day Care Center: effects on the development and behavior of children

Almeida, Patricia de Souza 29 May 2009 (has links)
The first years of childhood are essential to the child, is an environment stimulating, pleasurable and fun, with opportunities to develop their senses and abilities. When stimulated, the child becomes more active, dynamic, creative, emotionally balanced and healthy, and will perform better the proposed activities, to find solutions and make a good socialization. The objectives of this study were: to determine, in children from day care, the effect of environmental stimulation and toward the specific needs of individual mental and psychomotor development as well as behavior, evaluated according to the Bayley Scales of Infant Development - Second edition (1993); compare the groups with gains and losses recorded in the indices, according to the variables considered as risk factors for development; analyze the correlation between the indices of development MDI (Mental Development Index) and PDI (Psychomotor Development Index), and behavior (BRS Behavior Rating Scale), established by the Bayley Scales of Infant Development - Second Edition (1993). The sample consisted of 50 children of both sexes, aged between 4 and 42 months, who attended two day care centers in the city of Ribeirão Preto-SP, Brazil. Individual interviews were conducted with parents or guardians and the children were submitted to evaluation of development, using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, in two phases: before (Phase I) and after (Phase II) a period stimulation of the development implemented in one of the day care centers. The average values of MDI and PDI of both groups - Stimulated (E) and Non-Stimulated (NE), were in the classification of normal development in Phases I and II. In Phase I, the average PDI of Group NE was significantly higher than that of Group E (p =0,002). There was a statistically significant difference between the average value of PDI in Phase I and Phase II of Group E, higher in the phase II (p=0,002). Longer breast-feeding and child\'s age also correlated with increases in indices in the assessment of mental development; and nutritional status with a decrease in Group E. Higher birth weight and lower the age creep showed correlation with increased indices of psychomotor development in Group NE. None of the variables of personal history, family and environmental analysis also correlated with an increase or decrease of the indices in the assessment of psychomotor development of the Group E, which may suggest that the increase in PDI is the result of stimulation implemented with this group. Regarding the Assessment of Behavior, there was significant difference between Phase I and II for the Group Stimulated in Emotional Control and Motor Quality Factors. Comparing the values of BRS, MDI and PDI, it was obtained that the higher values of BRS were the groups with gains, particularly among stimulated, but no statistically significant difference, but with a tendency (p = 0.06) for gains in MDI. The data suggest for the sample studied that low-income family, poor maternal nutrition and smoking during pregnancy; poor conditions of nutrition and health of children today; problems of relationship between parent-child and the parents seemed to be potential factors for risk to development. While, higher age and parents\' education; better sanitation and housing conditions; adequate prenatal care; normal delivery; weight and size appropriate for the birth; postural development within the normal range, were potential protective factors to development. It is concluded that environmental stimulation and toward the individual needs can assist the psychomotor development and quality of behavior.
