Identification of Signatures of Selection in Bos Taurus Beef and Dairy Cattle Using Genome-wide SNP Genotypes

Choi, Jung Woo 2009 August 1900 (has links)
The objectives of this study were to identify signatures of selection in Bos taurus beef and dairy cattle populations and to annotate regions of selection with gene, function and QTL information. Differences in minor allele frequencies, population-average FST, population-specific FST, and integrated extended haplotype homozygosity scores were applied to a subset of the bovine HapMap data to characterize signatures of selection in 7 Bos taurus beef and 5 Bos taurus dairy cattle populations. Numerous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) exhibited evidence of selection across the genome and regions of BTA2 and BTA14 that are considered to be under positive selection in beef and dairy cattle, respectively, were highlighted. The current density of SNP limited our ability to annotate regions putatively under selection because most SNP in the assay were intergenic. This is likely because of the betweenbreed SNP discovery method that was used, which typically identifies SNP with higher allele frequencies.

A Study on the Status and Influence Factors about Textbook Selection by the Teachers on the Area of Social Studies in Junior High School in Kaohsiung City

Wu, Ching-Hui 10 July 2006 (has links)
The purposes of this research were to understand the views of the teachers on the area of social studies in junior high school in Kaohsiung City about the present status and influence factors on textbook selection, and to offer feasible suggestions according to the results. This research adopted questionnaire method to collect information about the present status and influence factors on textbook selection from 381 teachers of 41 junior high schools .The major instrument , i.e. The Questionnaire for Investigation the View about Present Status and Influence Factors on textbooks selection from the teachers on social studies area in junior high school in Kaohsiung City ,was designed to collect quantitative data ,which was later analyzed by means of percentage frequently distribution ,standard deviation ,one-way ANOVA ,Scheff¡¦e method ,and t-test ,etc .Otherwise ,the questionnaires can also offered the teachers to state other opinions about the present status and influence factors on textbook selection .The qualitative data can be used to support the statistic results or to offer other opinions about the present status and influence factors on textbook selection to this research. The major results were summarized as follows¡G 1.Teachers were mainly people selecting textbook. Parents, students, and scholars weren¡¦t average people to select textbook . 2.The average teachers have positive comments on the textbooks selecting procedure .But studies and professional evaluations on textbook selection were lacking. 3.A majority of the teachers agree that textbook selection criterions were important, but the most important criterions were content criterions. 4.The problems of textbooks selection were not serious, but it¡¦s difficult for the teachers who teach different kinds of subjects to choose the best textbooks. 5.The main correct factors for teachers and students textbook using have more influence on textbook selection than second correct factors for teachers and students textbook using. 6.The teachers with different school and individual backgrounds have significantly different views about textbook selection on people, procedure, and criterions, but haven¡¦t significantly different views about textbook selection on problems. 7.The teachers with different school backgrounds have significantly different views on main and second textbook using factors. The teachers with different individual backgrounds haven¡¦t significantly different views on second textbook using factors, but the teachers with different titles have significantly different views on main textbook using factors. In accordance with the results of this research, suggest concerning aspects of the education administrative, school¡¦s administrative staff, teachers and publishers, respectively. Follow-up studies were also proposed.

A Comparison of the MBA selection criteria in Taiwan.

Chen, Wen-Chen 06 June 2002 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to identify the selection criteria used by the management professors when they interview the candidates for MBA entrance examination in Taiwan. Seven famous graduate schools of business management were chosen for this study. With Q-method and survey, this study ranks and classifies the selection criteria of each graduate school. The samples include professors of those graduate schools and students who have gone through the selection interview. By using factor analysis, the research found the different types of professors with different selection criteria. The finding can be very useful for the graduate schools to know what students their faculty really wants. In addition, it is also informational to those applicants who want to enter the MBA program through selection channel to choose an appropriate graduate school. The findings of this research indicated: 1.These seven graduate schools used different selection criteria. 2.Most of all professors agree that the analyzing ability and foreign language are the two most important criteria. 3.Comparing the ¡§my own view¡¨ and ¡§perception of colleagues¡¦ view¡¨, the research did find some significant differences. 4.Higher consensus exists among the professors at Cheng-chi, Yuan Ze and FuJen Catholic University. The professors of Sun Yat-sen University, Cheng-Kung University and Taiwan University were more diversified. 5.Attitude towards selection criteria is not the same among the professors from different countries where they were educated. 6.Five types of Professors can be distinguished is terms of the selection criteria used.

Material and processes selection in conceptual design

Krishnakumar, Karthikeyan 17 February 2005 (has links)
Materials and manufacturing processes are an integral part of the design of a product. The need to combine materials and manufacturing processes selection during the early stages of the design has previously been realized. The work that generally attracts the most attention is by M.F. Ashby. This methodology, like others, concentrates on materials and manufacturing processes selection after the conceptual design is completed and before moving into embodiment design. The disadvantage of waiting until the conceptual design is completed to address materials and manufacturing processes is that the designer cannot search for conceptual solutions when dealing with issues relating to the materials and manufacturing processes domains. By not considering these issues early on in the design process, the scope for innovation is reduced and this results in the designer being fixated on the configuration at hand. It is well recognized that this is not the best way to address a design challenge and an even worse approach to innovation. The basic framework for which enhancements and improvements are suggested is the design methodology practiced and taught by the members of the Institute for Innovation and Design in Engineering (IIDE) at Texas A&M University. Conceptual design is very much a part of the IIDE design process; but the current format concentrates on functional parameters and how to search for conceptual solutions for these, and does not highlight materials and manufacturing issues in the preliminary design stages where it could be most helpful. The work documented in this thesis is an attempt to ensure that there is no disconnect between function oriented design and the materials and manufacturing processes that are applicable to that design. The core of the thesis is to incorporate a thought process which will help the designer during conceptual design phase to: 1. Consciously question if there materials and manufacturing issues; 2. Identify critical parameters in both of these domains; and 3. Search for conceptual solutions to these identified critical parameters.
