Die Risikopolitik von Private Equity- und Venture Capital Gesellschaften

Die Möglichkeiten einer Private Equity- oder Venture Capital Gesellschaft Risikopolitik zu betreiben, wurden bisher in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur noch nicht hinreichend untersucht. Diese Arbeit analysiert die Möglichkeiten, welche für Private Equity- und Venture Capital Gesellschaften bestehen um ihre Risikosituation zu optimieren. Der Autor entwirft ein Risikopolitikmodell für die untersuchten Gesellschaften und entwickelt daraus zwei verschiedene Ansätze, mit denen eine Private Equity- bzw. Venture Capital Gesellschaft ihr Risiko steuern kann: Vor dem theoretischen Hintergrund der Neo-institutionellen Ökonomie wird die Beziehung zwischen der betroffenen Gesellschaft und einem einzelnen Portfoliounternehmen analysiert. Der theoretische Ansatz der Portfoliotheorie wird für die Untersuchung des übergeordneten Regelkreises der Risikopolitik herangezogen, der sich aus dem Portfolio von Beteiligungsunternehmen ergibt. Die dabei generierten Hypothesen wurden im Anschluss mit Hilfe der Ergebnisse einer empirischen Untersuchung analysiert. Dabei wurde festgestellt, dass für österreichische Private Equity- und Venture Capital Gesellschaften die Beziehung zu einem einzelnen Beteiligungsunternehmen sehr relevant ist, wohingegen Diversifikations-überlegungen weniger Bedeutung beigemessen wird. Systematics and the evolution of calls and mating preferences on Túngara frogs (genus Engystomops)

Sexually selected traits are among the most costly, complex, and conspicuous elements of the phenotype. In polygynous reproductive systems, they evolve under strong selection by females. Why females favor those traits, however, is an on-going debate. Here, I use túngara frogs as a model system to study the evolution of communication under sexual selection. The wealth of available information on the behavior, neurophysiology, and reproductive biology of túngara frogs make them an ideal system to understand the patterns of signal evolution and explore the processes that have shaped them. In chapter 1 and 2, I review the taxonomy of túngara frogs (Engystomops) from western Ecuador. I describe three new species including their external morphology and advertisement calls. In chapter 3, I explore the phylogenetic relationships of túngara frogs, testing the support for alternative relationships previously reported for this group. The new phylogeny provides the framework for the comparative analysis carried out in chapters 4 and 5. In chapter 4, I present new female preference and male advertisement call data to test the sensory exploitation hypothesis of sexual selection. Using ancestral character reconstruction, I found that female preferences for complex calls did not originated before the appearance of complex calls, as predicted by sensory exploitation. Instead, my results suggest that the origin of complex calls and their preference originated at similar times. Finally, in chapter 5, I analyze the macroevolutionary patterns of call variation in male túngara frogs. A generalized least squares model demonstrates that advertisement calls have a strong phylogenetic signal. Although most species in Engystomops have distinctive calls, they share a common acoustic structure with two components that evolve at different rates. I did not found evidence of greater call differentiation among sympatric species relative to allopatric species.

Trailblazers in the Forest: Response of Endangered Mt. Graham Red Squirrels to Severe Insect Infestation

I examined habitat selection of middens within insect-damaged forest and compared home range and survival for Mt. Graham red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus grahamensis) in insect-damaged and healthy forest. Squirrels used habitat in areas with < 69% tree mortality. Basal area, canopy cover, and log volume were greater at middens than random locations. Within midden sites, only greater basal area of live trees distinguished occupied sites from unoccupied sites. Surface temperature at occupied middens tended to be cooler than unoccupied middens. Squirrels living in insect-damaged forest had larger home ranges than in healthy forest. Squirrel body mass and reproductive condition did not differ between forest types, suggesting that insectdamaged forest provided adequate resources. However, squirrels inhabiting insectdamaged forest experienced lower survivorship and 50% fewer potential reproductive events than squirrels in healthy forest, implicating presence of an ecological trap. Preservation of remaining healthy forest is a priority for management of this endangered species.

In recent years, a mounting body of evidence has arisen suggesting that this can have significant implications for the patterns of diversity seen in natural populations. However, existing theory has not yet fully characterized the effects of these distortions on the structure of genealogies. Pathologies of terrorist target selection

The phenomenon of Terrorism has perplexed and fascinated policy makers and scholars. While there has been significant amount of research on Terrorism, the dynamics or Pathologies of Terrorist Target Selection have received less attention, with few comprehensive treatises on the subject. In this paper, I review and critique existing literature on the subject, while offering a different perspective and model for this dynamic. First, I introduce a contemporary definition of terrorism and establish a framework for the analysis of Terrorist Target Selection. In Chapter 2, I posit that accurate Target Selection Forecasting Techniques need to account for the Adaptive Learning Mechanisms that Terrorist Groups adopt and existing case studies on the subject. Chapter 3 undertakes a critical literature review of Target Selection Case Studies. In Chapter 4, I suggest new research proposals that adopt this theme. In conclusion, I offer what we believe is a novel approach to understanding Terrorist Target Selection and argue that such a model should be flexible enough to work across the various Ideological Silos that Terrorist movements are bracketed into in the current Geo-Political Environment. / text

The road toward sympatric speciation in whitefish. : The effects of divergent selection on European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) size and behavior, and effects on zooplankton communities.

For almost every organism there are large gaps in our knowledge about the processes that leads to speciation. The changes an organism undergoes before divergence has occurred have remained a mystery, as it is difficult to say whether or not a species is going to diverge and when. To investigate this unknown the European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) and the northern pike (Esox lucius) were studied, as they produce a repeatable and predictable pattern of speciation in sympatry. To investigate the changes in phenotypes and behaviour in whitefish that precedes divergence, two lake populations were examined, Gräsvattnet and Ringsjön. Gräsvattnet was used as a control, with a population of whitefish but an absence of pike, whereas Ringsjön has a population of whitefish that invaded from Gräsvattnet and a pike population. The presence of pike presumably exerts divergent selection on the whitefish population. Fish and zooplankton were surveyed in both lakes from 1970 to the present day, which allows us to compare how whitefish populations and their resources change in the presence and absence of pike. The results found in Ringsjön show; (1) a change in habitat use, (2) a change in diet from pelagic to benthic, (3) an increase in the relationship between individual body size and diet and (4) a decrease in average size over the course of the study. (1)The presence of pike is believed to have forced the whitefish into the pelagic which could be seen in the result, with an increase in individuals caught in the pelagic. (2) The change in diet is thought to be caused by a resource competition created by individuals being forced to use the pelagic. Although insignificant this led to an overall reduction in zooplankton abundance by almost 40% which could have intensified competition. The resource competition could then have been intensified further by the change in composition of zooplankton relative abundance. (3) The increase in relationship between individual body size and diet is thought to increase due to the resource competition between smaller and larger individuals in the pelagic. Smaller individuals are better competitors than larger individuals for pelagic resource which could have led to the larger individuals switching to a more benthic diet. (4) The decrease in average size is thought to be caused by negative selection for larger individuals. Larger individuals have switched to a more benthic diet, and although the individuals are larger they still face the risk of predation in the littoral zone as they have not outgrown the gape size of the pike. This could have led to the average size reduction that may be the first steps in speciation, and ultimately leading to the divergence of two morphs by sympatric speciation in Ringsjön. In Gräsvattnet over the course of the study there were few and small changes in whitefish size, zooplankton relative abundance in the diet and in the environment. The results in Gräsvattnet could however suggest resource competition for benthic resources. Although resource competition is thought to be an important factor in the speciation of whitefish, without predation pressure no speciation occurs. This result could suggest the importance of predation pressure in the speciation of whitefish.

An examination of factors contributing to a reduction in race-based subgroup differences on a constructed response paper-and-pencil test of achievement

The objectives of the present study were to: (a) replicate the results of Arthur et al. (2002) by comparing race-based subgroup differences on a multiple-choice and constructed response test in a laboratory setting using a larger sample, (b) extend their work by investigating the role of reading ability, test-taking skills, and test perceptions that could explain why subgroup differences are reduced when the test format is changed from multiple-choice to a constructed response format, and (c) assess the criterion-related validity of the constructed response test. Two hundred sixty White and 204 African Americans completed a demographic questionnaire, Test Attitudes and Perceptions Survey, a multiple-choice or constructed response test, the Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices Short Form, the Nelson-Denny Reading Test, Experimental Test of Testwiseness, and a post-test questionnaire. In general, the pattern of results supported the hypotheses in the predicted direction. For example, although there was a reduction in subgroup differences in performance on the constructed response compared to the multiple-choice test, the difference was not statistically significant. However, analyses by specific test content yielded a significant reduction in subgroup differences on the science reasoning section. In addition, all of the hypothesized study variables, with the exception of face validity, were significantly related to test performance. Significant subgroup differences were also obtained for all study variables except for belief in tests and stereotype threat. The results also indicate that reading ability, test-taking skills, and perceived fairness partially mediated the relationship between race and test performance. Finally, the criterion-related validity for the constructed response test was stronger than that for the multiple-choice test. The results suggested that the constructed response test format investigated in the present study may be a viable alternative to the traditional multiple-choice format in high-stakes testing to solve the organizational dilemma of using the most valid predictors of job performance and simultaneously reducing subgroup differences and subsequent adverse impact on tests of knowledge, skill, ability, and achievement. However, additional research is needed to further demonstrate the appropriateness of the constructed response format as an alternative to traditional testing methods.
