Étude numérique des écoulements newtoniens et viscoélastiques dans la sortie d'une conduite courbée à 180° avec section carrée / Numerical study of newtonian and viscoelastic flows in the output region of an 180° curved duct with square cross section

Zambrano, Tibisay Coromoto 11 September 2013 (has links)
This work presents the numerical results and the analysis of the flow behavior of Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids, type Phan-Thien-Tanner (PTT), in an 180◦ curved duct of square cross section and straight output zone. The Navier-Stokes equations were written in generalized orthogonal coordinates, and solved using the finite volume method. The numerical results of the streamlines, development of vortex and velocity profiles in the output region are shown, for Dean numbers (125 ; 137 ; and 150) and four different Deborah numbers (0,1 ; 0,2 ; 0,3 ; and 0,4). We observed that the formation of supplementary twin counter-rotating vortex and the transitions of two-vortex patterns to four-vortex patterns or six-vortex patterns, as well as the vortex dimensions and the apparition time depend of number Dean and number Deborah.

Além disso, pode-se constatar que a palha é fator fundamental na preservação da qualidade do milho armazenado em espiga / Abstract: Small farms which produce corn for their own usage, mainly for animal feeding, have problem to preserve the produce due to the lack of efficient and low cost technics. Small farmers generally use empirical methods to extend corn storage-life and to keep it s quality. In th is work it was evaluated the effect of eucalyptus leaves CEucaliptus citriodora) as a preservative for unhusked corn ear in order to improve storage technic for small farmers and to reduce quantitative losses. The results showed that utilization of eucalyptus leaves and fumigation technics are equivalent but the former brings about economical and operational advantages over fumigation. In addition, it was observed that a conjugated treatment fumigation plus eucalyptus leaves) had best preserved the stored produce quality as well as improved fumigation. However, it seems that the husk is a very important factor in preserving unhusked corn ear quality / Mestrado / Engenharia Agricola / Mestre em Engenharia Agrícola

From Sinai to Jerusalem : a study of the Hebrew text of Psalm 68

Vincent, Mark Anthony January 2001 (has links)
This dissertation presents a study of one of the most difficult texts in the Psalter, Psalm 68. After an introduction setting out the distinctive features of my treatment and arguing for the need for a painstaking literary study, I divide my work into three sections. The first of these presents a translation with detailed notes on the text. The second explores this world of the text in more detail by examining the vocabulary of the Psalm (characterisation, semantic domains including geographical terms), its structural makeup (building from the smallest units to the largest), the central use and importance of intertextual connections, and the presence of ambiguity and `underdeterminacy'. I examine each of these as being of interest in their own right, but the ultimate purpose is to use them to deduce what a good reading of the Psalm might be and to cast light on its meaning(s) both to an original audience and to subsequenrt eaders.B y the end of this section I will have argued for a an `original' setting in the reigns of David or Solomon, one which is closely linked to the bringing of the ark to Zion and the building of the temple. My third section tackles the matter of writers and readers more explicitly. Although I shall have studied the text as one hitherto (since this is the only form in which we possess it), I now examine whether the Psalm `should' be seen as essentially a unity, and ask what can be known about its compositional history. I then turn to the question of dating, followed by a more explicit consideration of the implied audience of the text. Much work ha> been done on the possible cultic use of Psalm 68; I review this as part of my work on audience, before turning to the question of other readers in a final chapter. Although I shall have been primarily concerned with the initial meaning of Psalm 68 in the dissertation (for reasons of space), that chapter presents concluding reflections on the way in which the Psalm has been used subsequently and may sti'1 be used; I reflect on the continued power of the Psalm to speak through the centuries. Psalm 68 is indeed a complex text, but one which abundantly repays close reading and study, and one which is still fascinating, vivid, and arresting in the modern world.

"Like Another Esther": Literary Representations of Queen Esther in Early Modern England

Summer, Saralyn Ellen 12 January 2006 (has links)
This dissertation explores the significance of Queen Esther in early modern England by examining her literary representations in light of historical, religious, political, and social contexts. Although she is often linked to Deborah and Judith, Esther’s multifaceted character allows for greater flexibility in representation than is the case with other biblical heroines. The differing aspects of her character – obedient orphan, beautiful virgin, clever and courageous queen, savior of Diaspora Jews – inspire multiple, at times even contradictory, depictions of Esther in early modern literature. Whether Protestant or Catholic, male or female, Queen or commoner, sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English writers appropriate Esther in ways that paradoxically challenge and support women’s traditional roles in society. Chapter One introduces the Esther narrative as presented in the Old Testament and Apocrypha. Chapter Two examines Esther in relation to female authority, focusing specifically on references to Queen Elizabeth as an Esther figure. Chapter Three studies the dramatic interlude Godly Queen Hester, while Chapter Four analyzes works of prose featuring Esther as an exemplum for virtuous and heroic women. Chapter Five studies poetic depictions of Esther, and Chapter Six concludes the study by noting briefly how women authors engaged in the querelle des femmes enlist Esther to refute their opponents.

To Make A Difference: Re-viewing the Practice of Critical Pedagogy through the Lens of Cultural Myths about Teaching

Wilson, John, Tyler 29 April 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to generate new ways of understanding and imagining what it means to educate for and from a critical consciousness (Freire, 1974). My research is focused on my experience of trying to put critical pedagogy theory into practice in the context of teaching a grade 11/12 high school class. In contrast to oppressive pedagogies that functioned to “prepare students for dominant or subordinate positions in the existing society” (McLaren, 1994, p. 191), as a critical pedagogue, I was guided by the goal of liberating the students in my class by raising their consciousness. However, when I attempted to put critical pedagogy into practice, I soon found myself reproducing an oppressive, transmission-style pedagogy. If the goal of critical pedagogy was to emancipate students by providing them with a transformative educational experience, why did I continue to view myself and my students in ways that were oppressive and paternalistic? Critiques of critical pedagogy (Ellsworth, 1989; Gore, 1993) offer important insight into this question. Yet, a limited amount of research had been performed into how dominant cultural myths about teaching (Britzman, 1986, 2003) inform teachers’ desires and efforts to put critical pedagogy theory into practice. My thesis aims to shed light on the relationship between critical pedagogy and cultural myths about teaching by examining the discursive roots and mythologies reflected in my desire to “make a difference” in the lives of my students with critical pedagogy. In exposing how pedagogy, desire, and identity intersect in complex, creative, and contradictory ways, my research makes visible one of the most difficult lessons that teachers who wish to educate for and from a critical consciousness have to learn: “That the sincerity of their intentions does not guarantee the purity of their practice” (Brookfield, p. 1). / Thesis (Master, Education) -- Queen's University, 2011-04-27 23:32:14.497

"Deborah": The Creation of a Chamber Oratorio in One Act

Mixter, Mary 05 1900 (has links)
In comparing oratorio traits across history, three aspects of oratorio were found to be particularly applicable to the creation of "Deborah: A Chamber Oratorio in One Act." These aspects were: the selection of topic and the creation or adaptation of text; the differences between recitative and aria, in form and function; and the level of stylistic diversity within a given work.
