Chlorination Decoloration of Textile Wastewaters and Dyestuffs-A Kinetic Study

Almost all dyestuffs used for textile processing impose heavy colors on effluents such that they can¡¦t meet effluent regulations. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) has long been used for effluent decoloration by most textile plants. However, despite by the operators¡¦ experience, there is still no scientific method for controlling the dosing rate of sodium hypochlorite. An insufficient dosage may result in an aesthetically and legally unacceptable effluent. Whereas an excessive one may lead to the formation of chlorine-containing organic compounds which are harmful to the aquatic life and may limit the water utilization. It is necessary to develop a control technique for chlorination decoloration of textile wastewaters. In this study, secondary effluent samples from a textile wastewater plant and synthetic wastewater samples prepared by two azo-type dyestuffs were used for chlorination decoloration tests in a batch reactor with a residual chlorine indicator. Experimental results indicate that the most economic and effective reaction conditions for decoloration of the test wastewaters were pH = 4 and residual chlorine = 14 mg/L. In the conditions, wastewaters with true color intensity = 1,200 ADMI could be reduced to values less than 400 ADMI within 60 min. Results also confirm that on-line monitoring of residual chlorine concentration in the reacting liquid can be used to achieve a better control of chlorine addition. Experimental data also indicate that the color removal rate (-dC/dt) was linearly proportional to the color intensity (C) and free hypochlorous acid (HOCl) concentration.

L’utilisation de colorants synthétiques se développe depuis de nombreuses années dans des différentes industries. Les procèdes les plus couramment utilises pour le traitement des eaux usées colorées sont les traitements biologiques mais ils ont leurs limites. Les techniques d’oxydation chimique traditionnelle quant a elles conduisent à la coupure de la molécule au niveau du chromophore ne peuvent pas minéraliser totalement des colorants alors que la dépollution complète de ces effluents l’exigerait. Le procède photo-fenton homogène est une technique de traitement qui peut dégrader les effluents colores efficacement. Mais il y a quelques inconvénients majeurs qui limitent l’application industrielle de cette technologie. L’objectif de ce travail de recherche était d’étudier la décoloration et la dégradation des solutions des colorants: acide orange 7 acide orange 8 acide rouge i4 acide rouge 73 et acide bleu 74 par le procède d’oxydation avancée: photo-Fenton heterogene. Dans ce procède la zeolite fe-zsm5 a été utilisée comme un catalyseur heterogene. L’application de ce système nous a permis d une part de diminuer la quantité de boue formée au cours du traitement ainsi que la consommation d’énergie électrique engendrée par l’utilisation d’UV estimée à l aide de la méthode figures-of-merit et d’autre par d’étendre l’application du procède type photo-fenton aux ph plus élevés. La modélisation des procèdes étudies a été faite par deux méthodes à la méthodologie de surface de réponse (RSM) et les réseaux neuronaux artificiels (ANNS) - afin d optimiser la performance de système et également d'évaluer les effets simples et combines des différentes variables sur l’efficacité du traitement. / Large amounts of dyes are annually produced and applied in different industries. The biological methods are widely used for treatment of coloured ef fluents, but they have some limitations. Traditional chemical oxidations that destroy the chromophore of the molecule could not also result the complete mineralisation of the dyes. Homogeneous photo-fenton is a promising technique for treatment of the effluents but there are still some drawbacks that limit the industrial applications of this method. The aim of this work was to study the decolourisation and the degradation of coloured solution containing acid orange 7 acid orange 8 acid red I4 acid red 73 or acid blue 74 by an advanced oxidation process: heterogeneous Photo-fenton. In this study zeolite fe-zsm5 was used as a heterogeneous catalyst. Application of this system not only allowed us to diminish the quantity of sludge formed during the process but also reduced the consummation of electrical energy process keeps its high efficiency even at neutral phs. The modelling of the process was done by two methods - response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial Neural networks (ANNS) in order to optimise the performance of the system and to evaluate the simple and the combined effects of different variables on the process efficiency.

Enzymatic Biobleaching of Recalcitrant Paper Dyes

Modern manufacturing processes assume efficient utilization and recycling of natural resources whenever possible. Over the past decade paper recycling has progressed from 33.5% in 1990 to just above 48% in 2002.1 Indeed, for certain select grades, (newspaper and old corrugated containers) greater than 70% is currently being recycled. In contrast, mixed office waste and colored directory papers are often underutilized. A major difficulty in recycling these grades of paper is the problems associated with decolorizing the dyes present in the paper.2 Of the commonly used paper dyes, the stilbene dye Direct Yellow 113 and methine dye Basazol 46L are notorious4 for poor bleachability with the commonly used chemical bleaching agents including chlorine dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and sodium dithionite. The ability of white-rot fungi to decolorize colored effluents containing textile dyes is currently the subject of intensive research efforts. The secreted enzymes involved in dye decolorization include manganese peroxidase, lignin peroxidase and laccase. Laccase, a lignolytic enzyme, has also been studied for many years for the biobleaching of wood pulps. The ability of laccase to delignify pulp is greatly enhanced by the addition of small molecule mediators such as 2-2´ azinobis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT). This research project focused on applying laccase combined with a mediator to decolorize C.I. Direct Yellow 11 and Basazol 46L. Three mediators were tested: ABTS, HBT and violuric acid. Laccase/ABTS was most effective with 60% of the color being removed. The level of color removal was maintained at 60% even when ABTS concentration was lowered from 5 mM to 0.01 mM. When laccase/1 mM ABTS was applied to Direct Yellow 11 in solution, the majority of color loss occurred within 60 minutes. The ability of soybean (SBP) and horseradish (HRP) peroxidases and laccase to decolorize Direct Yellow 11 and Basazol 46L in solution was also examined. The results demonstrated that these two recalcitrant dyes could be effectively decolorized by enzymatic treatments by horseradish peroxidase, soybean peroxidase, and laccase with ABTS as mediator. SBP is effective from pH 4.5 to 8.5. The stilbene dye Direct Yellow 11 responded to both SBP and laccase/ABTS. For the methine dye Basazol 46L, SBP was a more effective treatment than HRP or laccase/ABTS. Basazol 46L responded quickly to SBP treatment with 74% reduction in signal intensity within 5 minutes. To evaluate the effectiveness of laccase/ABTS treatment, pulp dyed with Direct Yellow 11 and three commercial colored pulps were subjected to seven different bleaching treatments. These treatments consisted of 1)laccase/ABTS; 2)laccase/ABTS followed by alkaline extraction; 3)laccase/ABTS followed by bleaching with sodium dithionite; 4)oxygen bleaching; 5)oxygen bleaching followed by dithionite treatment; 6)alkaline hydrogen peroxide bleaching; and 7)alkaline peroxide bleaching followed by dithionite treatment. The best results were obtained by including reductive bleaching with sodium dithionite. For Direct Yellow 11 dyed pulp, laccase/ABTS followed by dithionite yield comparable reduction in color to oxygen or peroxide followed by dithionite.
