The Role of the Public School Superintendent in Local Economic Development

Thomas, Cheryl 26 April 2002 (has links)
The public school superintendent is seen as the leader of schools and as a spokesperson bridging schools and the community. With this thought in mind, along with reports suggesting school and business collaboration as the key to better schools and lasting economic growth, defining the school superintendent's role in local economic development becomes valuable. As school and business relationships change, superintendents must be prepared to address this evolving interdependence. The purpose of this study was to clarify the role of the public school superintendent in local economic development. Using a three-round Delphi technique, panelists representing various geographic locations and employment domains participated in developing a consensus on this role. Superintendents, economic development leaders, business leaders, and government officials individually identified the tasks important to the public school superintendent's responsibility in local economic development. Panel members then rated the level of importance of each suggested task and worked through the rounds to develop agreement using statistical feedback from the group response. The tasks agreed upon by 80% of the panel members as being important to extremely important were then examined to disclose the level of importance. The rating response mean and standard deviation were calculated for each task. These descriptive measures were then used to rank the most important tasks and better define the public school superintendent's role in local economic development. / Ed. D.

Fuel Cells are attracting interest as efficient and clean energy conversion devices. The logic of consensus on the foundations of science education in Canada: a Delphi study

Murray, John James 05 December 2014 (has links)
Despite certain episodes of Canadian influences on science education, the last six decades of science education in Canada has been a decidedly American experience – particularly from the standpoints of: 1) the foundational policy documents that have provided explicit impetus to periodic science curriculum reform in Canada; 2) the principal theoretical foundations, guiding assumptions, and goals of science education, and; 3) the development of curricular frameworks in Canadian provincial jurisdictions. Though contested, it will be argued here and supported by the research that the Canadian systems of science education operating in the provinces and territories have not had opportunity, historically, to engage in the architecture of curriculum uniquely from Canada that supplies broad and respected appeal to the context of Canadian society, its demographics, its geographic diversity, and its geo-political position internationally. The objective of this dissertation was to empirically determine the principal theoretical foundations and system conditions for a Canadian approach to science education. The research was conducted and documented through an online, anonymous, and asynchronous modified Delphi methodology. Over a five-month period, the assembled expert panel of 54 peer-acknowledged and representative science and education specialists from Canada - comprising fourteen identifiable professional affiliations in two cohorts - participated in a Delphi having three rounds. This first-of-kind Delphi has identified a number of consensus positions in accordance with standard statistical criteria developed in the research design. These consensus positions occur across four principal areas of impact on Canadian science education: (1) significant national and international globalization trends; (2) the foundations and goals of science education; (3) roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in curriculum, and; (4) a context for the future of science education in Canada. The findings of the study provide a new basis for, and constitute potential new challenges to, science education in Canada and argue persuasively for new terminology. Sustainability Science, Technology, Economy and Environment (SSTEE) is presented as a new, original guiding foundation for science education in Canada. This terminology constitutes a new tension for science curriculum and directly challenges the emergent trend of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as a basis for science curriculum reform.

The main objective of this Thesis is to present a prospective analysis about the tendencies of the world wide strategies of commercial vehicles’ development, in relation to the current local and international scenery. It has been done a research by using the Delphi method, which consists to regulate, systematically, the presentation of questions about a specific problem to a group of specialists. In order to guarantee more representative data, it has been adopted three distinct groups: Academics, OEMs Managers and OEM´s suppliers Managers. It is noticeable, after the data’s analysis, that Brazil has nowadays a comfortable status on the commercial vehicles’ market and also a good autonomy on product development. The specialists presented few arguments that could justify the modification of this scenery up to 2018, although there are clear evidences – like lack of qualified engineers on Brazilian market and the necessity of a better exchange of knowledge between the OEMs and Universities – that must be analyzed and suppressed, in order to guarantee the Brazilian product development sustainability in this segment.

Also, social claims like environmental care, energy efficient technologies and the need for high quality products are boosting innovations and improvements. On the plastics market, engineering polymers are the best suited materials for these improvements. It is the objective of this work to evaluate the tendencies for improved properties, new modification and reinforcement technologies, new potential applications and volumes of commercialization for this class of materials over the next 20 to 30 years. The first material selected for the research was Nylon 66 due to its huge ease of modification and versatility for application, in addition it is one of the most important engineering polymers. Polypropilene was also selected due to its versatility and possibility of utilization in engineering applications, specially in compounds. Delphi method was used as the research technique, it is based on a questionnaire sent to experts in polymers in successive rounds as a means of achieving consensus. Anonymity of participants, statistical evaluation of results and feedback to the experts are the main characteristics of this method. A questionnaire covering technological and market aspects was developed and sent to the participants in two rounds. It is seen in the results a tendency of growth in the market of engineering polymers for high temperature applications and in traditional materials replacement, like metals and ceramics, specially in the automotive, industrial and electro-electronic markets.
