An Assessment On Housing Design Exercises In Architecture Design Studio At Middle East Technical University,1957-2010

Rrumbullaku, Desantila 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Housing projects assigned in architecture design studio are considered as an exercise having several pedagogical objectives which constitute a suitable ground of maturation for students after completing their first and second year design studio. The aim of the research is to make an overview of the way housing design projects are conducted in the third year architectural design studio at the Middle East Technical University Department of Architecture, focusing on the last five years in particular. But in the first place, the background of housing assignments is reviewed in order to understand how teaching methods and problem definitions have evolved in the past. The objectives and the learning outcomes expected from these studio exercises, the approaches and tendencies that determine the way the project exercises are examined and lastly the teaching methods, strategies and tools are studied depending on the written and visual documents related to the studio works and interviews with the studio critics.

Constructing Computational Models Of Nature For Architecture: A Case On Transcoding The Intelligence Of Cactus

Erdogan, Elif 01 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The environment of knowledge exchange between computation and biology elicits a contemporary approach towards architecture. Computation, as an overarching mode of thinking, instructs the analysis, understanding and reinterpretation of the un-formal structure of natural organizations (such as systematic construct, information flow, and process through time) for architectural form generation. Consequently, the computing theory originates a mind-shift where processes, relations, and dependencies are a major concern for reconsidering and re-comprehending the environment. Besides, computation presents universal modes of thinking and tools for modeling, within which transdisciplinary studies and knowledge interchange between distinct disciplines are flourished. This thesis will discuss architectural form generation through interpreting computation as &ldquo / transcoding&rdquo / and an interface, while nature will be regarded as a &ldquo / model&rdquo / and a source for learning. A case study will be conducted by analyzing cactus plants and their common generative logic in the framework of computation. Consequently, the produced computational model of cactus plants will be scrutinized for probable outcomes, questioning what such a re-interpretation of natural systems may imply for architecture.

ADAPTATION TO URBAN FLOODS BY PLANNING AND DESIGN : GUIDELINES FOR AN ADAPTIVE MANAGEMENT TO URBAN FLOODS AND STORM WATER USE TAKING AS A CASE STUDY THE CITY OF BILBAO

Landa Mendez, Naia January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study is to propose a set of adaptive strategies and design solutions to manage floods and storm water in cities from the perspective of an architect and urban planner, based on empirical evidence and the level of effectiveness of the suggested measures. The study takes as an example the city of Bilbao due to its high risk of suffering fluvial and pluvial flooding exacerbated by tidal variations and see level rise projections. Based on the application of adaptation strategies grounded on the use of green solutions and innovative design, scientific literature and ongoing initiatives an projects in cities have been reviewed to prepare a complete state-of-the-art of measures and experiences to minimize the risk of flooding and provide co-benefits to Climate Change such as fresh water storage, biodiversity, water treatment, quality public spaces, etc. The applicability of this inventory of solutions is analyzed in detail for the case study of Bilbao, taking into account the current situation with regard: a) plans, b) stakeholders involved, c) needs and d) opportunities, and in order to give a respond to the lack of concreteness of many of the existing proposals against adaptation to Climate Change and flooding. The result are four different projects in hotspot areas of the city that put into practice the previously gathered measures organized in drainage systems (from the source to the downstream control). Recommendations are suggested for plans (General Master Plan) and policies to accompany the physical solutions and to set a complete basis for its operative use by public institutions (Bilbao City Council) or even professional practitioners (architects, urban designers, landscape architects, engineers). In sum, the paper seeks to propose alternatives to the traditional defensive approach of flooding prevention by implementing measures that provide other benefits for cities against Climate Change.

The specification of store environments : the role of store design-architecture in the consumer perception of retail brands

Murray, John January 2014 (has links)
The overall focus of this doctoral thesis is the examination of the role of store design-architecture in consumer perceptions of retail brand loyalty. More specifically, it examines how consumers’ perceptions at the store design-architecture level promote brand loyalty and attachment at the overall retail-level. This research, therefore, aims to address the underdeveloped extant knowledge of the role of the store design-architecture in retail branding. This thesis addresses two research questions: 1) is it possible to improve on the specification or measurement of the store environment beyond the novelty, complexity collative constructs proposed in traditional studies of the store environment?; and 2) what effect, if any, do these improved store environment constructs (from answering research question number one) have in explaining the role of store design-architecture in consumer perceptions of retail brand loyalty? In its examination of the role of store-level design-architecture in overall retail-level branding, the theoretical significance of this thesis is based on two activities. First, this thesis proposes a conceptual framework that draws on multiple, diverse literatures from design-architecture, psychology and marketing. The critical review of pertinent literatures from these three sources then enables the second activity: the generation of novel empirical insights based on surveys of consumer perceptions of store-level design-architecture. A research instrument is developed that compares higher and lower levels of design in two stores of Penneys, a discount fashion retailer. The responses of 145 consumers are examined in an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). A separate dataset of 403 consumer responses are analysed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equations Modelling (SEM). Multiple-group invariance testing is also completed on this dataset. The primary theoretical contributions of this thesis to the extant literature are five-fold. First, the principal contribution of this thesis confirms that store aesthetic preference is positively associated with retail brand loyalty. Thus, the second research question is satisfactorily addressed; I explain that there is a mild association between store aesthetic preference and the emotionally valenced retail brand attachment construct in higher-level design contexts. Instead, a store aesthetic preference association is observed with the more behaviourally valenced retail brand loyalty construct in lower-level designs. Consequently, this principal contribution to the extant literature reveals the perceptive dynamic of how consumers processing of store-level design-architecture correspond with their perceptions of retail-level brand loyalty. A host of global-attribute, objective-subjective, and cognitive-emotional perceptive processing at the store and retail levels are observed in the proposed theoretical framework. Second, to confirm the role of store design-architecture in retail brand loyalty, I develop: a new scale for retail brand product; modify scales for store prototype, store novelty, store aesthetic preference, store complexity and retail brand price; and introduce scales for brand attachment and brand loyalty from non-retail contexts into a retail context for the first time. This research, therefore, addresses research question number one by making a notable conceptual and measurement contribution to the specification of the store environment. Third, as a progression from the previous contribution, I use these improved store environments constructs to better specify the store environment, and examine the associations between store prototype, store novelty and store aesthetic preference. I demonstrate that theory such as the preference-for-prototypes literature helps to improve the extant understanding of the associations between store prototype, store novelty and store aesthetic preference. The confirmation of the existence of these associations essentially means that the proposed model is robust, credible and able to account for consumers objective-subjective, global-attribute discriminations of the store-level aesthetic. Fourth, in an effort to explain the relative visual and non-visual contributions to retail brand attachment and retail brand loyalty, I examine associations concerning retail brand product and retail brand price. Retail brand product is confirmed to have stronger associations with retail brand attachment than store aesthetic preference or store prototypicality. Thus, this research extends the extant knowledge of the relative contributions of visual and non-visual constructs to understanding retail brand loyalty. Fifth, this research contributes to the extant understanding of how non-invariance analysis can be employed in Structural Equations Modelling (SEM) to confirm differences between groups. This research examines differences in parameter values to confirm differences in perception of the higher and lower levels of store design-architecture. This type of use of non-invariance analysis is not frequently employed in SEM and I propose that this research instrument can be generalised to other retail contexts also. Finally, this thesis concludes by presenting the limitations of this research. It makes suggestions on potential future research that could be completed, and raises some pertinent implications for practitioners arising from this research.

Niches of Activity and Reprieve: An Architectural Induction in Service of Environmental Presence

Collins, Joshua 25 November 2011 (has links)
Design is the meeting of the processes that one employs and the intentions that one brings. Exploring an inductive methodology situates the design environmentally. The inherent dynamic and constructive processes, which arise from the qualities of methodological inquiries, are the basis for the inhabitation within place. An inductive process began by exploring the role of aural perception prior to contextual and design intentions. This resulted in a strong emphasis on experience and presence. Research into analogous disciplines resulted in an exploration of methods that facilitate the inductive operations of media, particularly noise. The provision of a contextual framework for observations provided order to method. A strategy was posited, where the development of constructs that addressed the entire range of environmental dimensions, from site to structure, could supply integrity to the situation of contextual forces; their tension and release. Hence, a general theory for the constructive inhabitation of place.

Evaluation Of Architectural Consciousness And Exploration Of Architecture-based Issues In Seismic Design

Mendi, H. Evgin 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The task of &lsquo / earthquake resistant design&rsquo / of buildings is generally considered as the province of engineering profession. Although there exists considerable number of publications related to seismic design (documentations, articles, theses, books, and earthquake codes), most of them are addressed to structural engineers rather than architects. However, earthquake affects whole building and all professionals involved in construction process should have their own roles and responsibilities for earthquake resistance. This thesis is about the roles and responsibilities of architects for being one of the professionals related to building construction and, particularly, the designers of them. Exposure of the level of awareness of architects related to the importance of their architectural designs having significant effects on seismic performance of buildings, and the level of general knowledge of them related to architecture-based seismic design issues is aimed. In this thesis, firstly, terminology related to &lsquo / earthquake&rsquo / phenomena is concisely introduced. Then, the present state of attitudes (interest, awareness and consciousness) of architectural community, architects working in the architectural offices of Ankara, towards earthquake and architecture-based seismic design issues is questioned and evaluated with a survey in the form of questionnaires. The evaluation of the results is presented with the help of statistical software called SPSS. Finally, the architecture-based issues in seismic design are re-explored and introduced for the use of architects. Thus, general idea or basic knowledge is formed, which is inferred from the survey as being one of the ways to enhance the incorporation of architecture-based seismic design issues into architectural design process.

Design methods for the control of products' design architecture / Σχεδιαστικές μέθοδοι για τον έλεγχο της αρχιτεκτονικής του σχεδιασμού προϊόντων

Πανδρεμένος, Ιωάννης 02 February 2011 (has links)
Objective of the present study is the development of design methods for the control of products’ architecture in order to obtain modular designs. Towards this target, an integrated approach is proposed, investigating the design architecture from two aspects: the -functions to parts- mapping as well as the point of view related to parts’ interactions. For the first aspect, an approach utilizing Axiomatic Design Theory is described in order to control the design architecture with regards to the -functions to parts- mapping. As far as the second aspect is concerned, two indexes are developed quantifying the design architecture in terms of the parts’ interactions perspective. Furthermore, an algorithm for clustering of product’s parts into clusters/modules is introduced. The algorithm utilizes Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Design Structure Matrices (DSMs). The aforementioned developments were incorporated into a CAD based software tool, having as objective the support of modular design. Its main functions are: (a) DSM generation from product CAD model, (b) calculation of the aforementioned indexes, (c) facilitation of clustering and (d) representation of clustered DSM in CAD form. Application of the tool to real case studies from the automotive industry, provide an evaluation of the developed methods. The main outcome of the present work is the integrated approach that was proposed and realized through the software tool, which integrates methods for the handling of a product’s design architecture. This process assists in real time (during the design process) design engineers to the generation of modular designs. The evaluation of the case studies reveals the efficiency of the proposed approach to produce such designs and validates its applicability to industry.

For that matter, some of the changes that marked the turn of the 19th century with the Indus- trial Revolution are contextualized, and so are the changes on lifesty- les and on the production of subjectivities. Ephemerality emerges as a striking concept in the 20th century, from the consolidation of aspects such as acceleration and displacement. From this perspective, Hussein Chalayan’s Afterwords fashion collection and the architectural work Blur Building proposed by the Diller Scofidio studio are presented. Fi- nally, from Design for Difference, developed by Angela Luna, fashion designer, derives a brief discussion on wearables as a production of existence territories, contributing to broaden the dialogues between the fields of Fashion Design and Architecture.

Kirch, Julia 22 November 2021 (has links)
