Teaching Fundamentals of Digital Logic Design and VLSI Design Using Computational Textiles

This thesis presents teaching fundamentals of digital logic design and VLSI design for freshmen and even for high school students using e-textiles. This easily grabs attention of students as it is creative and interesting. Using e-textiles to project these concepts would be easily understood by students at young age. This involves stitching electronic circuits on a fabric using basic components like LEDs, push buttons and so on. The functioning of these circuits is programmed in Lilypad Arduino. By using this method, students get exposed to basic electronic concepts at early stage which eventually develops interest towards engineering field.

Thesis (MTech (Graphic Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018. / Rapid advances in information technology and the Internet continue to create higher education learning solutions for the networked-world learner. Given the potential of these resources, opportunities and initiatives must be seized to promote the enhancement of student learning in higher education. The promise of faster communication networks and changes in students’ expectations have rendered urgent the understanding of technology and online learning for use in studio-based teaching and learning spaces in the networked global village of the 21st century. Paradoxically, however, the use of e-learning solutions in design-related education remains limited. In studio-based courses such as graphic and architectural design, for example, the facilitation of learning through electronic media at South African universities ranges from the minimal to the non-existent. A hands-on approach to studio-based teaching and learning is preferred, supported by the argument that it is hard to facilitate experiential learning through semi-synchronous online tools. The danger of this unsubstantiated model of thinking is that it is likely to lead to under-usage of Learning Management System (LMS) tools by educators in studio-based teaching and learning spaces. The problem is that no research has been done on this area in South Africa that is capable of providing conclusive evidence on which corrective measures can be based. Hence, the aim of this study is to understand the reasons for the limited adoption and use of LMSs in studio-based teaching and learning in South African higher education design-related disciplines. Within the interpretive epistemological paradigm, a qualitative research approach was adopted to source and analyse interview data from design students and lecturers at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). An Activity Theory (AT) analytical framework was employed. The findings suggest that reservations regarding the use of LMSs are more a function of prevailing perceptions than they are substantive. Unfounded negative assumptions about the functionality, relevance (usefulness), accessibility and ease of use of the systems emerged as the leading constructions of and explanations for the challenges faced. The study provides not only clarity on LMS usage patterns in studio-based educational spaces, but also useful comparative data on how an activity theory-grounded in ActAD framework can enhance the analysis of LMS activities in studio-based teaching and learning within the curricula for subjects like graphic design and architecture.

The central role of the designer's appreciative system in socially situated design activity

According to Dorst and Dijkhuis (1995) the two principal paradigms governing design activity discourse, are Simon's rational problem solving, and Schon's theory of design as a 'reflective conversation with the situation'. The rational problem solving view, that a fixed problem space structures design activity, has reduced the designer to a 'missing person' within design activity research (Dorst & Reymen 2004). This thesis aims to highlight the agency of the designer in structuring and motivating socially situated design activity. Dorst's (2006) framework of 'design paradoxes' suggests that design problems are evolving and unknowable. Design situations are determined through the designer's reinterpretation of the social discourses underpinning design situations, in a similar way to 'problem setting' within 'reflection-in-action' (Schon 1983). While Dorst suggests interpretation relies on intuition, problem setting relies on 'professional artistry' which is 'bounded' by the 'appreciative system' (personal knowledge, values and beliefs) and is essentially 'learnable' (Schon 1983). This thesis explores the correspondence between Schon's theory and contemporary frameworks including 'design paradoxes' (Dorst 2006), 'designerly ways of knowing' (Cross 1982), 'organising principles' (Rowe 1987), and 'creative problem construction' (Mumford et al 2004). It investigates the agency of the designer as evidenced in the use of the 'appreciative system'. This is elucidated using case study analysis of a novice designer, within a tertiary design degree. The case reveals the structured and motivated use of the designer's appreciative system. It indicates the deployment of 'appreciative goals' are fundamental to the 'linking behaviour of designers' (Dorst 2006), enabling design to begin in the absence of 'repertoire' or domain knowledge (Schon 1983), and the acquisition of new repertoire knowledge. These emergent findings offer new pedagogical perspectives both in terms of design expertise, which is normally associated with domain knowledge, and educating domain independent, multidisciplinary designers. Frames or similar 'organising principles' operate in most design fields, and create a 'principle of relevance' for knowledge from multiple domains and disciplines (Buchanan 1992). An awareness and acknowledgement of the objective function of subjective personal and social knowledge is essential in order to locate the 'missing' designer and understand innovative design activity.

Towards design-build architectural education and practice : exploring lessons from educational design-build projects

The design-build studio is an alternative to the conventional theory-oriented studio. In design-build projects students both design and build real buildings. Internationally, design-build projects have increased rapidly in architectural programmes over the past decade. Literature suggests that design-build projects are relevant for architectural education, but that there is a definite need for more theoretical and critical exploration. Design-build projects in the context of this study are defined as socially responsive, inhabitable, full-scale investigations. The value of this pedagogical construct for educators, students, architectural practice and society in general was an underpinning theme guiding this exploration. Design-build projects are located on the boundary between theory and practice. This research provides a view into my journey across this boundary, immersing myself in both the theoretical and practical. Principles of the designbuild process and design research mapped the research path. The research process commenced with the initiation of and active participation in a number of design-build constructions. Through critical reflection on the construction experiences and the literature, specific pedagogical and practice implications were explored. Cultural historical activity theory provided me with a sense of theoretical direction in this journey. Collaboration as a pedagogical tool and the possibility of exposing students to alternative practice possibilities were foregrounded as being uniquely situated within the design-build project. The value of this research is the contribution it makes to the current international call for a clearer understanding of the pedagogical and practice merit of design-build projects.

Design Study of a Wing Rudder : Exploring the Possibility to Implement Additive Manufacturing

Subtractive manufacturing are the most common methods in the aerospace industry to manufacture components. In these parts the buy to fly ratio is low and it needs accurate strengths analyses to static and dynamic loads especially were the different parts relate to each other with fasteners in the assembly work. Additive manufacturing has now been developed to be of such quality that the aerospace industry see the potential to use the technology in their production of parts. It has been possible to make them lighter, stronger and reduce the total amount of parts in an assembly. This mean probably some changes to the stakeholders in the process of their product development. Engineers who are working on the products will need to face the design aspects and restrictions with AM to choose the right component/sub-assemblies to convert to AM parts. This thesis will address the possibility to redesign a wing rudder and to get some knowledge about the engineer’s point of view of AM and how it may affect them. Today there are several aerospace industries adopting AM and get airworthy components to less critical parts as brackets but also parts in the engines as the fuel nozzle in an Airbus (Trimble, 2016). For larger parts, there have also been studies to use AM for example internal galley partition but the result is it will take too long time to print by todays machines. There are several different methods for AM and Powder Bed System is popular in the aerospace industry according to its geometrical correctness to the CAD model (Dordlofva, Lindwall, & Törlind, 2016). Commercial aircrafts industry starts to get harder regulations for their emissions to get lighter planes and less air resistance. AM open up the possibilities to meet these requirements by producing parts which was impossible to produce before. The design process for AM design today are not fully known yet, which leave a lot to imagination. There are general design rules on how to design for AM build but it does not necessary mean the part will be correctly built. There are several cost driven aspects with AM, the most expensive part is the print time but there are different aspects to. For example, CNC machining may be needed after the AM build and add cost for subtractive manufacturing. Interviews with engineer’s groups have been made to conduct their thoughts and knowledge of AM and how it may affect their work. Some uncertainties were mentioned and it was most focused on the process and the reliability of the finished part. The engineers think the design process will be almost the same and only change boundary conditions. To get ideas, a workshop was made with some design guidelines for development of different designs on the wing rudder and to bring positive and negative aspects to the design. An overall cost calculation was made for a few parts and the result shows that it is hard to compete with the design of the wing rudder today. The most important aspects for a success of AM is the print speed, qualified manufacturing processes and CAD software support for the engineers. / Flygindustrin använder sig främst av subtraktiv bearbetning i sin framställning av de olika komponenterna till ett flygplan. Det blir då ofta en väldigt låg grad av materialutnyttjande, endast några procent återstår av det inköpta utgångsmaterialet. Till det tillkommer monteringsarbete och noggranna hållfasthetsanalyser, både statisk och utmatningshållfasthet av sammanbyggda skarvar där fästelement är en del. Den additiva tillverkningen har nu utvecklats och visat sig inneha kvalitéer för att klara kraven som ställs i flygindustrin. Det kan göra detaljerna lättare, starkare och minska antalet komponenter i monteringsarbetet. Det kan innebära en hel del förändringar för olika intressenter som får börja tänka annorlunda. Ingenjörer som arbetar med produktframtagning kommer att ställas inför utmaningen att applicera denna teknik på lämpliga delar/delkonstruktioner. Detta examensarbetet undersöker möjligheten att designa ett vingroder till ett flygplan och bilda en uppfattning om ingenjörernas förtroende för additiv tillverkning samt hur det kommer påverka dem. Det finns idag flera flygindustrier som har påbörjat att ta fram flygvärdiga komponenter, framförallt mindre kritiska fästelement men även en del artiklar i motorer så som bränslemunstycke hos Airbus (Trimble, 2016). De har analyserat möjligheten att använda additiv tillverkning på större artiklar såsom inre kabinstruktur men har kommit fram till att det tar för lång tid att tillverka med dagens maskiner. Det finns flertalet olika additiva tillverkningsmetoder men den som står ut är pulverbäddskrivaren då den har en bättre geometrisk korrekthet gentemot CAD modellen (Dordlofva, Lindwall, & Törlind, 2016). Nya reglementen för utsläpp i den komersiella flygindustrin pressar företagen att bygga bättre flygplan som är lättare och därmed får mindre luftmotstånd. Designprocessen för additiv tillverkning är inte given då det inte finns några givna processer som täcker hela processen. Det finns generella design-riktlinjer i vad de olika maskinerna klarar av att bygga, men samtidigt är det ingen garanti att genom att följa dessa riktlinjer skapa en fungerande design. Det finns flera olika kostnadsdrivande aspekter med additiv tillverkning. Det som mest driver kostnaden idag är den låga skrivarhastigheten. Andra kosnadsdrivare är om det tillkommer efterarbete för att uppfylla toleranser eller få en korrekt / plan sammanfogningsyta. Arbetet har utförts med intervjuer av ingenjörsgrupper för att skapa en uppfatting om deras syn på additiv tillverkning och hur det skulle ändra deras arbete. En viss osäkerhet förekom men det berodde framförallt på osäkerheten för säkring av processen, dvs tillverkningsprocessen och att kunna vara säker på att detaljen håller måttet. De ansåg att designprocessen inte skulle förändras så mycket, utan bara att randvillkoren skulle ändras. Utifrån workshops och designriktlinjer har koncept tagits fram och utvärderats med för och nackdelar. En översiktlig kostnadskalkyl har gjorts som visar på att det blir svårt att designa roder som en större enhet för additiv tillvekning som är ekonomiskt jämförbart med dagens tillverkingsmetoder. De viktigaste framgångsfaktorerna för additiv tillverkning är ökad skrivarhastighet, kvalificering av tillverkningsprocesserna och CAD stöd för ingenjörerna.

PART I I believe we are products of the age in which we live. Contemporary thinking shapes our historical present and reinterprets our historical past. This world is shaped by many keyhole views. The cornerstones of knowledge are built on a foundation of theory and objective reality. However, the fundamental underpinning of knowledge and theory lies in our perception of reality itself. The old cliche, “you don’t know what you have until you lose it,” is a perspective from which we can evaluate that which preceded as well as the threshold of new thought. A construction of reality is fundamental, yet particular to the temporal context. I propose to explore these issues and their relationship to judgement and decision making processes in design. The approach will be essentially pluralistic. PART II The uncertainty of the historical present is coupled with a hope for the future. For many architects the future holds their vision and inspiration. The future is, after all, the horizon we travel toward. Man is now expanding this horizon to space and other planets with alternative environments. Part II will explore architecture as atmosphere, landscape and dwellings through a collection of paintings free of the constraints of existing technology and theory. Due to societal gender roles, rights for women, in both education and opportunity, should materialise in adult education systems. In order for women to be exposed to work opportunities as well as to maintain the domestic and child-rearing roles they play in society, these systems and spaces must be reinvented. I hope to defi ne indigenous feminist theories, and then to manifest these in the creation of learning spaces. Th rough deconstructing the hugely diverse lived experiences of women in their social roles, I will question educational subject matter, women’s representation as learners, workplace roles, domestic and child-rearing roles, and fi nally challenge the idea of the widely accepted school and classroom model as a centralised institution. Alternative practices of learning and knowing possibly have great impact on transformation for women. Th e ties between education and work lead me to choose factories as my site of interest. Th e site of Jeppestown is appropriate because it is where the light industrial practices about which I am talking, continue to exist. With this thesis I aim to propose an alternative model for working- women as students and educators. I aim to reinvent the systems and spaces in which women learn and in which contextualised feminist theories are manifested. / XL2018
