Degradation of mechanical properties of vinylester and carbon fiber/vinylester composites due to environmental exposureUnknown Date (has links)
An experimental investigation was undertaken to determine the effects of marine environmental exposure on the mechanical properties of vinylester resins (VE510A and VE8084) and carbon fiber/VE510A vinylester composites. The effect of carbon fiber sizing on the composite strengths was also examined. Neat resins were exposed to marine environments until moisture content reached a point of saturation after which they were tested in tension, compression and shear. Compared to the baseline dry specimens, specimens subjected to moisture showed overall increased ductility and a reduction in strength. Dry and moisture saturated composite specimens were tested in tension and compression in different orientations. Longitudinal specimens were tested in in-plane shear and interlaminar shear. Composites with F-sized carbon fibers displayed overall higher strength than those with G-sized fibers at both dry and moisture saturated conditions. An analysis of moisture absorption of the composites was performed which vii shows that the moisture up-take is dominated by the fiber/matrix region which absorbs up to 90% of the moisture. The composites experienced reduced strength after moisture absorption. The results revealed that the fiber sizing has stronger effect on the fiber/matrix interface dominated strengths than moisture up-take. / by Alexander M. Degradation of the composite fiber/matrix interface in marine environmentUnknown Date (has links)
Durability of the composite materials in marine environments has been investigated experimentally and with analytical and numerical methods. The main focus of this study is on the integrity of the fiber/matrix interface under seawater exposure. A single-fiber compression test specimen called the Outwater-Murphy (OM) test has been analyzed using mechanics of materials principles and linear elastic fracture mechanics. Sizing of the OM specimen was conducted so that debonding of the fiber from the interface should be achieved prior to yielding of the matrix and global instability failure. Stress analysis of the OM specimen has been conducted from theory of elasticity and finite element analysis. A superelement technique was developed for detailed analysis of the stress state at the fiber/matrix interface. The interface stress state at the debond site in the OM specimen, i.e. at the hole edge, was identified as biaxial tension at the fiber/matrix interface. Characterization of cure and post-cure of 8084 and 510A vinlyester resins has been performed using cure shrinkage tests based on dynamic mechanical analysis and coated beam experiments. In addition, moisture absorption, swelling and the influence of moisture on the mechanical properties of the resins were determined. Testing of OM specimens consisting of a single carbon or glass fiber embedded in vinylester resin at dry conditions and after seawater exposure revealed that the debond toughness was substantially reduced after exposure of the OM specimen to seawater. C(F) did not debond. Macroscopic carbon/vinylester woven composites where the fibers were sized with F sizing were tested in shear at dry conditions and after four weeks of seawater exposure. Condition of infrastructure is deteriorated over time as it gets older. It is the deterioration model that predicts how and when facilities will deteriorate over time. In most infrastructure management system, the deterioration model is a crucial element. Using the deterioration model, it is very helpful to estimate when repair will be carried out, how much will be needed for the maintenance of the entire facilities, and what maintenance costs will be required during the life cycle of the facility. However, the study of deterioration model for civil infrastructures of ports is still in its infancy. In particular, there is almost no related research in South Korea. Thus, this study aims to develop a deterioration model for civil infrastructure of ports in South Korea. There are various methods such as Deterministic, Stochastic, and Artificial Intelligence to develop deterioration model. In this research, Markov model using Markov chain theory, one of the Stochastic methods, is used to develop deterioration model for ports in South Korea. Markov chain is a probabilistic process among states. i.e., in Markov chain, transition among states follows some probability which is called as the transition probability. The key process of developing Markov model is to find this transition probability. This process is called calibration. In this study, the existing methods, Optimization method and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), are reviewed, and methods to improve for these are presented. In addition, in this study, only a small amount of data are used, which causes distortion of the model. Thus, supplement techniques are presented to overcome the small size of data. In order to address the problem of the existing methods and the lack of data, the deterioration model developed by the four calibration methods: Optimization, Optimization with Bootstrap, MCMC (Markov Chain Monte Carlo), and MCMC with Multiple imputation, are finally proposed in this study. In addition, comparison between four models are carried out and good performance model is proposed. This research provides deterioration model for port in South Korea, and more accurate calibration technique is suggested. Furthermore, the method of supplementing insufficient data has been combined with existing calibration techniques.

Virulence of <em>Photorhabdus</em> spp.: Examining the Roles of Environment, Evolution, and Genetics in Insect MortalityBlackburn, Dana 01 December 2015 (has links)
Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) (genera Heterorhabditis and Steinernema) kill their invertebrate hosts with the aid of a mutualistic bacterium. The bacteria (Xenorhabdus spp. for steinernematids and Photorhabdus spp. for heterorhabditids) are primarily responsible for killing the host and providing the nematodes with nutrition and defense against secondary invaders. Photorhabdus is a Gram-negative bacterium in the Enterobacteriaceae family with high virulence towards their insect hosts. To achieve high mortality rates Photorhabdus produces a variety of virulence factors such as toxins, lipases, proteases, secretion systems, and fimbriae. EPNs are amenable to laboratory rearing and mass production for biocontrol applications against insects using in vivo or in vitro methods; however, in vitro liquid culture is considered to be the most efficient. In this method the symbiotic bacteria are cultured prior to the addition of their partner EPN. This can leave the bacteria susceptible to a number of problems such as genetic drift and inadvertent selection. Regardless of the culture method the symbiotic bacteria exhibit trait deterioration or changes due to laboratory rearing. This project had three primary aims: 1) investigate the role of nutrition in trait deterioration, 2) examine virulence evolution using a phylogenetic context, and 3) identify genes that are necessary for survival and virulence inside the insect host. Prior to studying these objectives we first determined the optimal conditions for growing and counting viable cells of Photorhabdus. We discovered that growth is enhanced by the addition of pyruvate to growth media. To determine the role of nutrition in trait deterioration we repeatedly sub-cultured Photorhabdus in three different media types. Throughout this study we found that, in contrast to previous studies, trait deterioration does not always happen and the environment influences trait deterioration. Furthermore, based on our phylogenetic studies we found that Photorhabdus spp. are evolving to an increase in insect virulence. Lastly, using Tn-seq we determined a list of 84 genes that are needed for efficient virulence inside the insect host and provide suggestions for ongoing research efforts.

Chloride Diffusivity and Aging Factor Determined on Field Simulated Concrete Exposed to SeawaterUnknown Date (has links)
Chloride diffusivity in high performance concrete is influenced by the exposure environment, aside from the concrete mixture properties like, water to cementitious ratio (w/cm) and presence of add-on pozzolans. In this study, a set of concrete specimens (eleven-different concrete mixtures) were cast and exposed to three different environmental conditions (Tidal, Splash and Barge) in which the solution was seawater or brackish water. These exposures simulated environmental field conditions. After the specimens had been wet cured for 32 days (on average), the specimens were exposed to three different field simulation conditions for up to 54 months. The specimens under the field simulated conditions were cored at 6, 10, 18, 30 and 54 months at four elevations and then the chloride profiles were obtained from the cores. The apparent diffusivity values for each profile were calculated based on Fick’s 2nd law. Then, the aging factor “m” was calculated by regression analysis of the diffusivity values vs. time (days) plotted in the log10-log10 scale. This was done for samples exposed to the three different exposure conditions and then the results were compared side-by-side. First, the “m” values were calculated using the exposure duration. Then, to study the effect of including the curing time on “m” value, the curing time was added to the exposure time and a new calculation and “m” value was obtained and compared with the previous results. Moreover, upon inspecting the chloride diffusivity values vs. time plots, it was observed that in some cases, a number of data points showed significantly higher or lower values in comparison with the rest of the data points. It was decided to recalculate the “m” values for these cases, and to only use selected data points instead of all data points (i.e., remove outlier data points). In terms of chloride diffusivity value, it was found that in most cases the specimens with higher water to cementitious (w/cm) ratio showed higher diffusivity, as expected. Further, the presence of pozzolans had a noticeable impact on the chloride diffusivity by decreasing the diffusion rate due to microstructure changes that occurred with time. In terms of “m” values, the result for the field simulated conditions showed a range of “m” values dependent on the specimen’s mixture composition and the elevation at which the specimens were cored. It was observed that the chloride diffusivity declined with time and after a certain amount of time (in this research, almost after 30 months) the diffusivity reduction became small and a transition in the slope of the diffusivity trend appeared in a number of cases. After the transition, the diffusivity trend reached either a plateau zone or continued with a significantly lower slope, depending on the time, composition and exposure. Barriers to Timely Activation of Rapid Response TeamsHerdrich, LaJuanah Jean 01 January 2019 (has links)
Timely activation of the rapid response team (RRT) depends on the nurse's willingness
and ability to make a rapid decision. The practice-focused questions for this DNP project
sought to identify barriers that contribute to delays in activating the RRT when needed in
medical-surgical patients. The self-efficacy theory was the guiding theory and was used
to examine self-confidence and performance along with Donabedian's health care model.
Qualitative data were obtained through focus groups and identified 2 prominent thematic
barriers among nurses with less than 3 years' experience: a lack of self-confidence and
the of lack of knowledge and experience. Results of a chart review included 34 charts to
determine if the RRT were called appropriately and were inconclusive. Finally, an 11
item survey with 9 demographic questions showed a statistically significant difference on
the summed survey score between nurses with less than 3 years of experience and more
tenured nurses, indicating a lack of perceived support, self-confidence, and knowledge
among the nurses with less than 3 years of experience (Pearson chi square = 7.403 with 2
df and p = .025). Results were presented to leaders at the site and the recommendations
resulting from these observations include the use of high-fidelity simulation education.
Nurse educators and senior leadership from the medical surgical units agreed to accept
the recommendations and proceed with developing an educational solution to address the
barriers. Building knowledge, skills and self-confidence in nurses reduces the barriers to
effective use of the RRT, and results in better outcomes for hospitalized medical-surgical
patients, a positive social change.

The development of pavement deterioration models on the state highway network of New ZealandHenning, Theunis F.P. January 2008 (has links)
This thesis presents the results of developing road pavement deterioration models for the State Highway network in New Zealand pavement deterioration models are an integral part of pavement management systems, which are used to forecast long-term maintenance needs and funding requirements on a road network. As part of this research, a Long-term Pavement Performance (LTPP) programme has been established on 63 sections of the State Highways. These sections are representative of typical road sections and climatic conditions on New Zealand roads. Data collection on these sections is undertaken on an annual basis and consists of high accuracy manual measurements. These measurements include road roughness, rutting, visual defect identification and strength testing with a Falling Weight Deflectometer. Based on the LTPP data, new model formats for New Zealand conditions were developed including a crack initiation model and a three-stage rut progression model. The rut progression model consists of three stages, initial densification, stable rut growth and a probabilistic model to predict accelerated rut progression. The continuous probabilistic model developed predicts the initiation of pavement failure events such as crack initiation and accelerated rutting. It has been found that this model type has a strong agreement with actual pavement behaviour as it recognises a distribution of failure on roads rather than failure occurring at an particular point in time, namely, a year. The modelling of rut progression in the three stages including, initial densification, stable rut progression and accelerated rutting has resulted in a significant increased understanding of this defect, especially for thin flexible chip seal pavements. It has been established that the in-service performance of these pavements is relatively predictable. However, incorporating both the in-service performance and the failure of pavements into one model was unrealistic. Therefore, by having the different stages of rutting, resulted into a more accurate forecasting of this defect. Although this research has covered the two priority pavement models including cracking and rutting prediction, it has established the model framework for other pavement models to be developed. As more data become available, further work can be undertaken to refine the models and to extend the research into the performance of alternative construction materials.
