Financial education for low-income audiences : a guide to program design, implementation, and evaluation

Booth, Lalita D. 01 January 2008 (has links)
In recent years, programs designed to promote financial literacy among lowincome populations have proliferated. However, such programs have largely been developed by small community-based organizations operating in isolation from one another. Most have been conducted in absence of guidance explaining how to ensure that the program meets the needs of the target audience. Very few studies have been able to link the program to subsequent increases in financial understanding or improvements in financial behaviors among participants. This thesis serves as a guidebook for community organizations that intend to provide financial literacy training to low-income audiences. The subject is introduced by offering a working definition of financial literacy, a brief overview of the state of financial literacy education in the United States, and a discussion of the importance of financial literacy. The political and social climates surrounding financial literacy are then discussed, followed by a summary of previous research studies that have found financial education to be effective. The subsequent chapters provide financial educators with practical guidance on the program's design, content, delivery, evaluation, and administration. The final chapter provides insights from the fields of economics and psychology. Supplemental resources for financial educators are found in the appendices.

Empowerment through Hindu nationalism? : examining gender relations in the Shiv Sena

Deshpande, Chitra January 2005 (has links)
This dissertation explores whether women and men can be empowered through cultural nationalism based on religious/ethnic identities. Religious fundamentalism is typically not associated with women's empowerment. As a patriarchal, Hindu nationalist party that advocates violence, the Shiv Sena is also an unlikely agent of women's empowerment. Yet, the Sena has been attracting numerous women who claim to have gained confidence through the party. Using the Shiv Sena as my case study, I interviewed four male and seven female Shiv Sena members using the biographic narrative method. By examining their biographic narratives and interviews of their families and colleagues, I was able to delineate the different empowerment cycles for men and women in Shiv Sena and determine each participant's level of empowerment. The empowerment framework defined by Jo Rowlands (1997), which distinguishes between personal, collective, and relational empowerment, serves as the basis of my assessment of women's and men's empowerment. As violence is generally disregarded as a means of empowerment, I discuss it in relation to the construction of empowering cultural identities. While establishing theoretical frameworks regarding empowerment, cultural identity and gender, I also examine the disempowerment of Maharashtrians (whom Shiv Sena originally represented) by the socio-economic and historical conditions of Bombay, India. I then demonstrate how Shiv Sena, led by its Chief, Bal Thackeray, has constructed a new hegemonic masculine identity for Maharasthrian men as a means of empowerment. In the final chapters, I examine Shiv Sena's impact on the lives of individual women and men. This analysis revealed that despite the patriarchal constraints imposed by the Sena, women were becoming personally empowered in both the private and public spheres. In contrast, while Shiv Sena men were achieving collective empowerment in the public sphere, they had more difficulty becoming personally empowered in both the home and workplace.

These skills develop gradually in children, and are essential to everyday interactions and children's social learning. Thus, we find it relevant to study the relationship between the development of theory of mind and empathy, as these two skills are important dimensions of social-emotional development and children's social-cognitive. The main objective of this research was to investigate the associations between theory of mind and empathic ability in children during early childhood education. Thus, our study aims to investigate the relationship between theory of mind and empathy as integral parts of social cognitive development. Participants in this study included 40 children aged between 3 and 6 years. Children's performance in tasks theory of mind and empathy, quantitatively and qualitatively, was analyzed by age group. Children were considered to be 3, 4, 5 and 6 years, descriptively, and then two groups of 3 and 4 years and 5 and 6 years. The second analysis was performed using the Student T test. Analysis of correlation between theory of mind and empathy with the Pearson test was performed. The results showed the existence of a correlation between empathy and theory of mind, although not statistically significant, except in relation to the false belief task. Also, we could see a correlation in our study between better performance of children in theory of mind and empathy with increasing age of the child / A teoria da mente e a empatia, cujas fronteiras teóricas ainda não estão claramente definidas, são habilidades sociocognitivas importantes, que se desenvolvem gradualmente na infância, sendo fundamentais para interações cotidianas e aprendizagem social da criança.

Geothermal Potentials in Puna, Hawaiʻi: How Pele Teaches the Spaces Between

Iwashita, Ann M. January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation offers an examination of the concept of sustainability, via an ethnography of geothermal life in the district of Puna on Hawaiʻi Island. In the midst of global discourse on climate change, population growth, and energy needs, ‘sustainability’ brands a remarkable number of initiatives to signify a thoughtful connection with earth, and concern with the continuation of all of existence. Close examination of what sustainable measures have meant for life in the district of Puna on Hawaiʻi Island, however, reveal the ties of discourses on and enactments of ‘sustainability’ and ‘sustainable’ living to the sustenance of market, colonial inheritance and renewability, and the manufacture of narratives that erase forms of existence—human and nonhuman, including and especially the geological. Examinations of the notion of ‘sustainability’ alongside currents of Kanaka ʻŌiwi inquiries into earth’s heat element and its relations, and settler experiences of geothermal activity, reveal the pliability of material Natures in the face of human desire, the graceless scaffolding of lives under Late Liberalism, and the structure of Late Liberal biases as suspended in love with the biontological—those forms deemed “Life.” In the dissertation I examine engagement points between literatures on Development, Indigeneity, and Space, in particular what they reveal about possible relationships with land and resource, as well as literatures on Foucauldian biopower and what Elizabeth Povinelli (2016) has termed “geontopower”—increasingly exposed arrangements of power as divisions between Life and Nonlife in the Late Liberal period—to think through the commodification of rock and earth, and the spaces between things where the possibility for hulihia (overturning) continues to exist.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study it´s a part of major project that is evaluating the maternal neuropsychiatric disorders in the gestational-puerperal cycle under the point of view of the early detection and intervention and their consequences in the familiar triad. Mothers characteristics, obstetric and health information of the baby were collected through a structured questionnaire. The instruments used were the Scale of the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) to know the perception of the mother with the social support and AIMS (Alberta Infant Motor Scale) that evaluates the motor development of the baby. Results: A total of 203 mother-infant dyads were evaluated. Motor development was associated with maternal perception of social support in bivariate analysis in the domains of affective support (p = 0.04) and emotional support (p = 0.01) in the bivariate analysis, but did not maintain its association in the adjusted analysis . In the multivariate analysis, infants of lower socioeconomic classes (C, D or E) (p = 0.02); birthweight < 2,500 g (p <0,01); (P = 0.02) and who did not need neonatal intensive care unnit (NICU) admission (p = 0.03) presented higher averages in the motor development evaluation. Conclusion: Factors related to changes in motor development of babies between 90 and 120 days of life are related to socioeconomic factors and health conditions at birth.

Analysing the social effects of tourism on residents: the case of Parys, South Africa

Sigo, N. E. 11 1900 (has links)
M-Tech Tourism Management / Residents’ attitudes towards and opinions about tourism is important as they are the ones dealing directly or indirectly with tourists and the development of the industry. As one of the key stakeholders their support is needed to grow the industry in a sustainable manner. For South Africa as a developing country tourism is one of the focus areas of development. This growth is supported by a number of initiatives to create more (but also more sustainable) tourism destinations especially for small towns such as Parys (Free State; South Africa). The primary objective was to analyse the social effects of tourism and determine the factors influencing these effects on the local community of Parys, located in the province of the Free State. This was done by conducting an empirical study among residents in Parys. The questionnaire was developed based on similar research done in other communities. The questionnaires were captured in Microsoft Excel and analysed in the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v 23.0). From a negative point of view residents highlighted the increase in prices of goods and services due to tourism development. From a positive perspective residents felt that the development of tourism lead to more opportunities for people to have fun, more tourists visit the area and the image of Parys has improved. From the factor analysis for social effects the following factors were evident: Business and community effects, Negative social effects, Opportunities for residents, Environmental effects and Cost of living effects. The latter two factors were rated the highest and thus residents felt that tourism lead to an effect on the environment and an effect on their cost of living. This should be monitored so that residents remain positive and do not start to blame tourists for negativities happening in Parys. When analysing the image of Parys from the perspective of the residents the factor analyses revealed three factors namely Infra- and suprastructure, Nature and cultural attractions and Hospitality of which they felt the strongest about the first and the last factor. Clearly from the results these residents enjoy staying in Parys, do not consider tourists to be a threat and welcomes visitors to the area. The social effects of tourism development is, to a certain extent, influenced by gender, language, level of education, age and number of years living in Parys. Overall it can be concluded that residents are fairly happy with tourists visiting Parys and the development taking place due to tourism. They are aware of the negative impacts but the positive impacts currently outweigh the negative impacts. It is recommended to include residents in the development process or at least keep them aware of what is happening, why it is happening and what opportunities it might bring to them. The results of this study differ from that of others indicating that communities are unique and there are unique aspects influencing their opinions regarding the social effects of tourism. The researcher recommended that the private and public sectors of Parys should continue their current practices to uphold the positive attitudes but also consider options where residents can become more involved in the development of the industry.

The formation of attitudes toward development in southern Labrador /

Schneider, Robert H. January 1984 (has links)
This study examines the problems outsiders have in understanding local attitudes towards development in the southern Labrador community of Cartwright. It looks at local history and the nature of community complexity. The way in which these complexities provide a context for local discourse and shifting frames of reference are reasons why outsiders rarely understand the ideological coherence underlying what local people say. / An approach is proposed for a more "humanistic" anthropology of development that takes into account local attitudes towards development. A "multi-layered" approach, it entails a more concerned interest in listening to what local people themselves have to say about their own situation and incorporates aspects of history and community life as necessary analytical perspectives. Based upon this greater understanding of local experience, this approach puts order and coherence into what are often disparate and seemingly inconsistent statements.
