Throughout the 20th century, Favelas in Rio/Brazil were represented by external actors. In the 21st century however, the Favela (and urban periphery) residents themselves are expressing new perspectives about people and territories on various media channels. In this context, the present study investigates the category of the 'peripheral communicators' which plays an important role as reformers in the contemporary change of favela and urban periphery representations. The research analyze the network of productive members of the collaborative website 'Viva Favela 2.0' (a project by Viva Rio, an NGO from Rio de Janeiro), between 2010 and 2013, highlighting their individual self-representation added to each personal profile page, as well as part of their media production. These content creators are favela residents involved in several types of media and cultural activities, and articulated through multiple networks. Most of them either hold a diploma in Social Communications or study towards one. They are progressively taking part on the social dialogue not only as media professionals, but also as citizens supporting the development of their communities.
