Diatom-Based Paleolimnological Reconstruction of Quaternary Environments in a Florida Sinkhole LakeQuillen, Amanda Kay 10 March 2009 (has links)
Despite lake sensitivity to climate change, few Florida paleolimnological studies have focused on changes in hydrology. Evidence from Florida vegetation histories raise questions about long-term hydrologic history of Florida lakes, and a 25-year limnological dataset revealed recent climate-driven effects on Lake Annie. The objectives of this research are (1) to use modern diatom assemblages to develop methods for reconstruction of climatic and anthropogenic change (2) to reconstruct both long-term and recent histories of Lake Annie using diatom microfossils. Paleoenvironmental reconstruction models were developed from diatom assemblages of various habitat types from modern lakes. Plankton and sediment assemblages were similar, but epiphytes were distinct, suggesting differences in sediment delivery from different parts of the lakes. Relationships between a variety of physical and chemical data and the diatoms from each habitat type were explored. Total phosphorus (TP), pH, and color were found to be the most relevant variables for reconstruction, with sediment and epiphyte assemblages having the strongest relationships to those variables, six calibration models were constructed from the combination of these habitat types and environmental variables. Reconstructions utilizing the weighted averaging models in this study may be used to directly reveal TP, color, and pH changes from a sediment record, which might be suggestive of hydrologic change as well. These variables were reconstructed from the diatom record from both a long-term (11,000 year) and short-term (100 year) record and showed an interaction between climate-driven and local land-use impacts on Lake Annie. The long-term record begins with Lake Annie as a wetland, then the lake filled to a high stand around 4000 years ago. A period of relative stability after that point was interrupted near the turn of the last century by subtle changes in diatom communities that indicate acidification. Abrupt changes in the diatom communities around 1970 AD suggest recovery from acidification, but concurrent hydrologic change intensified anthropogenic effects on the lake. Diatom evidence for alkalization and phosphorus loading correspond to changes seen in the limnological record.

Reconstructing the Late Holocene History of Human Activity and Climate from a Costa Rican Diatom RecordUnknown Date (has links)
This project expands on the 4200-year history of Laguna Los Mangos by adding diatom analysis to existing records of pollen, charcoal, elemental composition, and stable light isotope analysis. Diatoms were counted in peroxide-treated samples, and data were analyzed using cluster analysis, PCA, CCA, and Pearson correlation. Diatom variability was correlated with nitrogen and organic material. Before 3430 cal yr BP, diatoms reflect landscape instability with higher lake levels and macrophyte cover. This period was followed by a period of agriculture-induced nutrient pollution, reduced pH, and increased precipitation until about 2450 cal yr BP. Peaks in A. granulata may indicate periods of increased mixing driven by precipitation. Diatom composition reflects reduced agricultural activity and lake desiccation during the TCD and increased precipitation and agricultural collapse during the LIA. Stratigraphic and microfossil evidence of repeated late Holocene tsunami inundation at Sitkalidak Island, AlaskaPrater, Alexa Brianne 28 September 2021 (has links)
Seismic hazard models for Alaska require estimates of the size and frequency of prehistoric megathrust earthquakes. However, observations that place limits on the size of subduction paleoearthquakes along the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone are scarce. To help place bounds on the along-strike extent of prehistoric Alaska-Aleutian subduction ruptures, we present stratigraphic and microfossil evidence of repeated tsunami inundation over the last ~400 years at Sitkalidak Island, located 0.5 km off the coast of south-central Kodiak Island. Peat cores collected from an estuary in southern Sitkalidak Island reveal three anomalous, laterally continuous sand beds with sharp upper and lower contacts preserved within a coastal peat sequence. The microfossil and lithostratigraphic characteristics of the sand beds, including the presence of anomalous marine planktonic diatoms, high fragmentation of diatoms, and upward fining sand sequences, indicate high-energy marine incursions consistent with tsunami inundation. Radiocarbon dating constrains the deposition of the sand beds to AD 1964, AD 1788, and ~400 cal yr B.P. The peat core stratigraphy and dates are consistent with tidal wetland stratigraphic records observed at sites ~90 km to the west at Sitkinak Island, and ~80 km to the east at Middle Bay, Kodiak Island. Diatom results from Sitkalidak Island suggest decimeter-scale subsidence during the deposition of the 1964 CE and 1788 CE sand bed. Deformation concurrent with the 1964 and 1788 ruptures along with the presence of a sand bed associated with the ~400 cal yr BP rupture at Sitkalidak help better define the western and eastern rupture limits, and thus the permissible maximum magnitudes, of past Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone ruptures. / Master of Science / The Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone experiences frequent great earthquakes over magnitude 8 which often produce far-reaching tsunamis. Seismic hazard models that help coastal communities predict and prepare for future hazards require estimates of the size and frequency of prehistoric earthquakes. Data for prehistoric earthquake events in the western region of the subduction zone is scarce. To help address the lack of prehistoric data and understand the rupture path and magnitude of past Alaska-Aleutian earthquakes, we present stratigraphic and microfossil evidence of repeated tsunami inundation over the last ~400 years at Sitkalidak Island, located 0.5 km off the coast of south-central Kodiak Island, Alaska. Sediment cores collected from a marsh in southern Sitkalidak Island record three laterally continuous sand beds with sharp stratigraphic contacts preserved within a coastal peat. Diatom microfossil and grain-size characteristics of the sand beds indicate high-energy marine incursions consistent with chaotic tsunami inundation. Numerous organisms produce ornately detailed inorganic structures (often known as shells) with features on length scales from the nanoscale to the microscale. One organism, commonly referred to as a diatom, originates from algae and is found throughout the oceans on Earth. These diatoms possess skeletal structures, frustules, made from silicon dioxide. This chemical makeup limits the number of possible applications for which these structures can be used.
Using a series of gas displacement reactions, these frustules can be converted to other useful materials, such as magnesium oxide and titanium dioxide, while maintaining the features of the frustule template. In the current research, silicon dioxide frustules were converted to titanium dioxide replicas using method previously devised by our group. The titanium dioxide replicas were subjected to a hydrothermal reaction by exposing the replicas to an aqueous basic solution containing barium hydroxide to form barium titanate and barium strontium titanate replicas. The effects of reaction temperature, time, and solution composition on extent of conversion were examined. The conventional method of converting titanium dioxide to barium titanate, using a convection heating oven, was compared with a microwave assisted heating method to study the advantages of using microwave heating over convection heating.
