Undergraduate Student Writing Across the Disciplines: Multi-Dimensional Analysis Studies

Hardy, Jack 18 December 2014 (has links)
This dissertation uncovers and examines linguistic and functional patterns of student writing in the first two years of college. A corpus of student papers from six disciplines (philosophy, English, psychology, biology, chemistry, and physics) was collected, and multi-dimensional (MD) analysis (Biber, 1988) was used to examine the ways that discipline and paper type influence writing. Further explorations of the data compare lower-level student writing to upper-level student writing, professional academic biology writing, and the discipline-specific approximations of an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course. Findings show that specificity of both linguistic and functional properties exist even at such low levels of disciplinary acculturation. These studies are followed by a summary and contextualization of their findings. Finally, future inquiry using collected data and future investigations into student literacy practices are proposed.

Élaboration de miniémulsions dans un nouveau mélangeur à écoulement élongationnel : influence des paramètres du procédé et de la formulation / Élaboration of miniemulsion in an elongational flow mixer : influence of process and composition parameters

Souilem, Inès 18 December 2012 (has links)
Mini or nanoemulsions are widely used in different fields like cosmetic, pharmaceutic and biomedical… Different processes allow the preparation of nanoemulsions. However, they all present limitations in terms of droplet size, mixing energy, viscosity ratios, pressure ranges… This work focused on the development of a new process based on elongational flow for theelaboration of miniemulsions. The approach consisted in studying the influence of the process and formulation parameters on droplet sizes. This study allowed us to better understand the mechanisms of drop breakup. Then, a dimensional analysis was carried out in order to correlate the obtained droplet sizes to the studied parameters by the use of the appropriate dimensionless numbers. Finally, miniemulsion synthesis experiments were performed in order to try to combine, in the samedevice, both emulsification and polymerization, in the prospect of process intensification.

January 2011 (has links)
A solução do problema equivalente é obtida utilizando a mesma malha e interpolações do problema mecânico. Como resultado, constatou-se que o algoritmo proposto conseguiu descrever satisfatoriamente as trajetórias de descontinuidade, consumindo menor tempo de processamento / Abstract: This work contributes to the generalization to 3D problems of numerical analysis of crack propagation, through finite elements formulation with embedded discontinuity. In plane problems the discontinuities correspond to lines that can be tracked in a relatively simple way, by sequentially constructing straight segments, following the crack orientation inside each solid finite elements. In tree-dimensional analysis the tracking scheme is more complex since planar surfaces must be constructed inside each element and these planar surfaces must be continuous between elements. It is show in this work, an alternative version of discontinuity path construction technique in three-dimensional analysis based on the solution of an analogous heat conduction problem, established from the local failure orientation based on the stress state of the mechanical problem. The solution of the equivalent problem is obtained using the same mesh and interpolations of the mechanical problem. To minimize computational effort, a strategy is proposed in which the analysis to track the discontinuity path is restricted to the domain formed by few elements near the crack surface front, which develops along the loading process. To validate the poposed methodology three-dimensional analysis of experimental fracture test were performed and the results were contrasted with those obtained from the literature. The comparison between the process time of the proposed algorithm and the global algorithm was performed too. It was found that the proposed algorithm was able to describe the discontinuity path satisfactorily with reduced computational time / Mestre

Francisco Nogueira Vilaça 23 May 2012 (has links)
Irrigation systems are generally dimensioned neglecting the calculation of the local head loss which often causes a hydraulic disbalance of this system. There are many special components on a trickle irrigation system to which there are not mathematical equations that allow the calculation of these head losses. This study aimed the adjustment of one equation for calculating the local head losses to the direct passage and one for the lateral passage, caused by the presence of initial connectors on the lateral line. The local head loss on the direct passage is caused by the protrusion area of the connector inside the pipe and the local head loss on the lateral passage is caused by the change in the flow cross-section, when water passes through the connector. For both situations the local head loss on the connector was obtained by the difference between the local head loss on the pipe plus the connectors and the local head loss on the pipe without the connectors. There were used 5 connectors in 5 diameters polyethylene pipes and 3 diameters PVC pipes. Dimensional analysis was used to develop the equations that for the direct passage presented a determination coefficient of 97,27% and for the lateral passage the determination coefficient was 96,26%. The two equations developed showed a good coefficient of performance, and its use is indicated for the limits tested in this study.

High-Dimensional Analysis of Regularized Convex Optimization Problems with Application to Massive MIMO Wireless Communication Systems

Alrashdi, Ayed 03 1900 (has links)
In the past couple of decades, the amount of data available has dramatically in- creased. Thus, in modern large-scale inference problems, the dimension of the signal to be estimated is comparable or even larger than the number of available observa- tions. Yet the desired properties of the signal typically lie in some low-dimensional structure, such as sparsity, low-rankness, finite alphabet, etc. Recently, non-smooth regularized convex optimization has risen as a powerful tool for the recovery of such structured signals from noisy linear measurements in an assortment of applications in signal processing, wireless communications, machine learning, computer vision, etc. With the advent of Compressed Sensing (CS), there has been a huge number of theoretical results that consider the estimation performance of non-smooth convex optimization in such a high-dimensional setting. In this thesis, we focus on precisely analyzing the high dimensional error perfor- mance of such regularized convex optimization problems under the presence of im- pairments (such as uncertainties) in the measurement matrix, which has independent Gaussian entries. The precise nature of our analysis allows performance compari- son between different types of these estimators and enables us to optimally tune the involved hyper-parameters. In particular, we study the performance of some of the most popular cases in linear inverse problems, such as the LASSO, Elastic Net, Least Squares (LS), Regularized Least Squares (RLS) and their box-constrained variants. In each context, we define appropriate performance measures, and we sharply an- alyze them in the High-Dimensional Statistical Regime. We use our results for a concrete application of designing efficient decoders for modern massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems and optimally allocate their power. The framework used for the analysis is based on Gaussian process methods, in particular, on a recently developed strong and tight version of the classical Gor- don Comparison Inequality which is called the Convex Gaussian Min-max Theorem (CGMT). We use some results from Random Matrix Theory (RMT) in our analysis as well.
