The experience of people diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder in the workplace : perspectives of therapists / S. VosVos, Sonet January 2003 (has links)
Awareness due to increase crime has highlighted the occurrence of immense personal and
social problems. Problems resulting from disorders such as Schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) are less common but have a profound impact on all of
us. Research has shown that 97% of people with severe abuse and life trauma before the age
of nine, develop DID.
The objective of this study was to investigate (from the perspectives of therapists) the
experience of people diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) in the workplace.
A qualitative research design was used to capture the essence of the individual's experience
thereby enabling the researcher to develop an understanding from the participant's point of
view. In this study seven therapists were interviewed and each completed a questionnaire.
This was the basis used to demonstrate the typical behaviour of DID in the workplace.
The results indicated that DIDs cope to a certain extent but tend to switch (switching)
personalities when exposed to trauma, stress or events that triggers past life trauma. Defense
mechanisms and switching can have a negative influence on the organisation and its
employees, but most of all on the DID. If professional treatment is available, the condition
can be fully cured.
Most patients treated were female, averaged 29 years of age, were single, and had
experienced some kind of abuse. Patients experienced problems directly related to DID, such
as lack of concentration, attention deficiency and memory loss, depression, migraine and
constant headaches. Their behaviour is inconsistent and unpredictable, and they experience
relationship problems.
Results show that DIDs can hold relatively senior positions but tend to change jobs on a
regular basis.
Although this condition can be differentiated from other Psychological conditions, most DIDs
have previously been misdiagnosed. A Psychological-based paradigm is mostly used to
diagnose the condition.
Recommendations to the organisation (especially to the HR department) and

The effects of pain suffered from musculoskeletal disorders by dental professionals may lead to reduced work hours, loss of production, and early retirement. Although third- and fourth-year dental students are provided lectures about musculoskeletal disorders, proper positioning and ergonomics, they are at an increased risk of developing MSD. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence on musculoskeletal disorders in third- and fourth-year dental students and to determine if third-year dental students experience more MSD pain than fourth-year dental students at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry. A total of 50 third- and fourth- year dental students responded to the online questionnaire, 21 third-year dental students and 29 fourth-year dental students. Both third- and fourth-year dental students report experiencing MSD pain over the last twelve months. There was no statistically significant difference between MSD pain felt between third- or fourth-year dental students.

Background: Current national prevalence estimates of DSM-5 diagnosed substance use disorders (SUDs) among adults with justice system involvement are lacking. Methods: This study drew from NESARC-III data (n = 36,309; 2012–2013), a nationally representative U.S. sample, to examine current and lifetime alcohol use disorder (AUD) and drug use disorder (DUD) diagnoses among adults reporting current or prior drug-related, alcohol-related, and general legal problems. Results: Adults reporting current alcohol-related legal problems were 22 times more likely to have a current AUD diagnosis (AOR = 22.0, 95% CI = 12.1; 40.1) and 15 times more likely to have had a lifetime AUD diagnosis (AOR = 15.2, 95% CI = 7.5; 30.9) than adults without alcohol-related legal problems. Adults with lifetime drug-related legal problems were 3–5 times more likely to have a current (AOR = 2.6, 95% CI = 2.1; 3.2) and lifetime (AOR = 5.1, 95% CI = 4.3; 6.1) DUD diagnosis, with stimulant use disorder being the most prevalent (AOR = 5.4, 95% CI = 4.5; 6.5). Adults with general legal problems were around 3 times more likely to have a current AUD (AOR = 3.2, 95% CI = 2.6; 4.0) or DUD (AOR = 3.5, 95% CI = 2.8; 4.4). Women with any type of legal problem were more likely to have SUD diagnoses than men. Conclusions: SUD diagnoses are prevalent among adults reporting legal problems, particularly those involving alcohol. There is a continued need for community-based addiction prevention and intervention efforts, especially for women with justice system involvement.

Differentiation of Central Auditory Processing Disorder and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and AdolescentsAustin, Laura J. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not children diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) can be distinguished from one another on the basis of both objective and subjective assessment of attention and behavior. First, children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD, CAPD, and concomitant ADHD/CAPD were compared to participants with emotional problems on measures of attention/concentration, depression, anxiety, and parental reports of internalzing and externalizing behaviors. Overall, statistical analyses did not reveal significant differences between performances of children diagnosed with ADHD and those diagnosed with CAPD. However, clinical comparisons across groups of children diagnosed with ADHD, CAPD, comorbid ADHD/CAPD and Affective Disorders revealed condition-specific clinical profiles, thus providing some support for CAPD as a distinct clinical entity. Second, exploratory cluster analysis was performed to further investigate the relationship between ADHD and CAPD. This procedure lead to the identification of four distinct clusters. However, analyses of these clusters revealed no distinct pattern of performance for children diagnosed with either ADHD or CAPD. Rather, participants with these diagnoses were evenly distributed throughout the clusters. Additionally, no cluster clearly represented the expected clinical profile for a diagnosis of CAPD- namely, significant auditory attentional/processing problems in the absence of other attentional difficulties. Implications for the assessment and treatment of childhood attentional disorders are discussed and recommendations for future research provided.

The aim of the study was to gain an understanding of the impact of trauma on interpersonal relationships as well as to determine components of psychotherapy found most helpful in the recovering process.
