Die Afrikaanse bestemming van C S Lewis se The voyage of the Dawn TreaderVan der Watt, Marike 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis is internationally considered as one of the classics of
children’s literature. The series consists of seven books, of which only the first four were
translated into Afrikaans, namely Die Towenaar se Neef (The Magician’s Nephew), Die Leeu,
die Heks en die Hangkas (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), Die Perd en sy Seun (The
Horse and his Boy) and Prins Kaspian (Prince Caspian). According to the publisher, Human
& Rousseau, they have no intention to translate the remainder of the series. The three books
that have not been translated into Afrikaans are The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver
Chair and The Last Battle.
The main aim of this study is the practical translation of a selection of The Voyage of the
Dawn Treader. The Functionalist approach of Vermeer and Nord, Toury and Chesterman’s
translation norms from Descriptive Translation Studies, Venuti’s foreignisation and
domestication and Klingberg’s cultural contex adaptation form the theoretical framework for
both the discussion and analysis of the source text as well as the translation. The four types
of translation problems as identified by Nord are used as the framework for the annotations
of the translation.
By doing a theoretically based translation, the connection between theory and practice is
illustrated: the translator chooses a general approach and translation strategies and is
consequently guided to make consistent translation choices on macro as well as micro
levels. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: C.S.
Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair en The Last Battle.
Hierdie studie fokus hoofsaaklik op die praktiese vertaling van ’n gedeelte van The Voyage of
the Dawn Treader.

(Un)(sub)conscious manipulation: Antjie Krog’s translation of Nelson Mandela’s ‘Long walk to freedom’Honey, Marisa Freya 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006). / Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, ‘Long walk to freedom’, can be viewed as a milestone in South African history. Although it is not necessarily significant in a literary sense, it played an important role in making many South Africans aware of another side to their country’s history, and introduced them to a man who, besides being the world’s most famous political prisoner and a respected statesman, is also an ordinary human being.
The Afrikaans translation of the autobiography, Lang pad na vryheid, formed part of a project to translate the original document into all the languages of South Africa (three other translations have been completed thus far). This project is discussed in relation to the ideological motive for it, and also in relation to the ideological position of Afrikaans in South Africa and the ideology and poetics of the translator.
The study is based on a descriptive approach, specifically as manifested in the manipulation theory of André Lefevere. It attempts to place the translation of autobiography as a genre within translation theory, and suggests that the translator of autobiography has little ‘leeway’ with regard to the application of translation strategies, specifically those that change the original narrator’s ‘voice’.
The various ways in which the text has been ‘manipulated’ in the production of its translation, both to make it function as a text in the target language and in ways that cannot always be justified on that basis, lead to the conclusion that it is very difficult to translate autobiography without interfering with the very personal telling of a person’s life story by that person, and without modulating the narration in a way that cannot always be reconciled with the autobiographer’s ideology.
The modulation of the autobiographer’s voice, whether this takes place consciously, subconsciously or unconsciously, is finally argued to produce a translation that can no longer be viewed as the autobiography of Nelson Mandela in the strict sense.

Translating African folktales for children into German : challenges, strategies and solutionsKratz, Julia 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South African author Linda Rode‘s book In die Nimmer-Immer Bos (2009a) and Elsa Silke‘s English translation thereof In the Never-Ever Wood (2009b) have won a number of prizes in South Africa, which is evidence both of the quality of the anthology and its translation, as well as of the continued significance of the folktale genre in today‘s fast-paced, modern society. People continue to make sense of the world through telling stories and, although the stories told today might be marked by life in the 21st century, our ancestors‘ stories are still appreciated by many. Although Rode‘s tales are not unlike other folktales, her collection differs in that it is a mosaic of cultures and their folklore spanning the globe, a book that appeals to the whole family, and to young readers and listeners in particular. Through a practical translation into German of selected tales from Silke‘s English version of Rode‘s book, the present thesis investigates ways and means of translating folktales for children. A functional approach was suggested, taking into account the European audience as well as the original intention of the author. As such, the author‘s style was naturalised and an attempt was made to replicate it in the target language, whereas culture-specific items relevant to the setting of the individual tales were retained. Hans J. Vermeer‘s skopos theory, as enhanced by Christiane Nord, as well as Lawrence Venuti‘s concepts of foreignisation and domestication were discussed, amongst other relevant theories. Many of the challenges discussed in the annotations to the practical translation typically occur in the translation of literature for children, and the study thus hopes to make a contribution to research on the translation of literature for children. Interviews conducted for the purpose of the present study furthermore proved the positive impact of good cooperation between the people involved in a translation project on the final translation product. The resulting translation, meant to impart knowledge and pleasure to the audience, furthermore serves as a translation sample that is intended to entice German publishers to commission a translation of Rode‘s anthology for the German book market.

Winged words : a descriptive and quantitative study of figurative speech in the subtitles of 7de LaanMorden, Lizl 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)-- Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates subtitling in 7de Laan, comparing episodes from 2007 to episodes from
2010 with a focus on figurative language. It is a quantitative, descriptive study and aims to
determine the overall adequacy or acceptability of the subtitles, the translation strategies used,
how figurative language and language varieties are translated and compares findings from 2007
to those of 2010 to establish whether there has been a change in approach over this period.
The source text, 7de Laan, is discussed in Chapter 1, which also outlines how the study will
proceed, the research problem and the research questions. Chapters 2 and 3 are the literature
review of the relevant theories. Chapter 2 covers Descriptive Translation Studies and the
translation of figurative language. The challenges particular to subtitling, specifically the
constraints of the medium, are discussed in Chapter 3.
The following two chapters are the analysis and each begins with the methodology used for that
analysis. Chapter 4 is a macrolevel analysis of the corpus and determines the
acceptability/adequacy of the subtitles, their governing translation norms and analyses the
translation strategies used. More specific questions are answered in Chapter 5, which analyses
the translation of figurative language, the representation of language varieties in the subtitles
and the influence catering for a hearing-impaired audience has on translation decisions.
The findings indicate that the subtitles of 7de Laan are mostly acceptable and that acceptability
increases in 2010. The translation strategies used and their frequency of usage are similar over
the years. However, there are slight changes: in 2010 there is less literal translation, more
omission and fewer figurative-specific translation strategies are used. The findings further show
that there is less figurative language in the subtitles in 2010. Additionally, there is a tendency of
levelling out figurative language in both years which increases in 2010. The analysis of
language varieties indicates that for sociolects, age markers influence the subtitles more than
race markers do. Idiolects are rendered but how much of an idiolect is rendered depends on its
markers. The analysis also finds that subtitling for hearing-impaired audiences is a significant
factor in the translation process over and above the spatiotemporal constraint of subtitling.
Daar is egter klein veranderings: in 2010
is daar minder letterlike vertalings, meer weglatings en minder vertaalstrategieë wat spesifiek op
figuurlike taalgebruik gemik is. Die bevindings dui ook aan dat daar minder figuurlike taal in die
2010-onderskrifte is. Die ontleding van taalvariëteite toon dat, ten opsigte van sosiolekte,
ouderdommerkers ‘n groter invloed op onderskrifte het as rasmerkers. Idiolekte word wel
verteenwoordig, maar die mate daarvan word deur die idiolek se merkers bepaal. Die ontleding
dui ook aan dat onderskrifte wat gerig is op gehoorgestremde kykers, ‘n groot faktor in die
vertaalproses is, benewens die tydruimtelike beperking van onderskrifte as sodanig.

A critical evaluation of bilingual Chinese/English dictionaries for elementary and intermediate Mandarin learners at Stellenbosch UniversityWang, Mei 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The number of Chinese-learners in South Africa has increased rapidly in recent
years, but the quality of the dictionaries that are available for their use has not
improved much. The more students study Chinese, the more it becomes necessary to
create suitable dictionaries to facilitate their studies. In the hope of meeting this need,
this study selects two written dictionaries commonly used by students at Stellenbosch
University in South Africa, namely the Oxford Beginner's Chinese Dictionary and the
Concise English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary, to analyze, comment on and
compare in terms of structure and equivalence. Using the results of this analysis, this
study offers suggestions for improving the quality of future Mandarin learner’s
dictionaries.
This study takes into consideration the situation faced by students when learning
Chinese abroad, especially in South Africa, the development of pedagogical
lexicography in Chinese-learner’s dictionaries in China and abroad, the relationship
between online dictionaries and written dictionaries, and some special characteristics
of the Chinese language, all of which factors greatly influence the making of a
dictionary.
Theoretically and methodically, this study is based on Function Theory as
presented by Sven Tarp. According to Function Theory, before writing a dictionary,
lexicographers must analyze specific types of users in specific types of situations.
This study attempts to follow Tarp’s suggestion by analyzing a small group of
dictionary users with the help of a survey conducted by the author in an attempt to get
a general idea of how Mandarin learners at Stellenbosch University use dictionaries. The main focus of this study is the frame structure, microstructure,
macrostructure and dictionary equivalence in two dictionaries--Concise and
Beginner’s. After carefully analyzing these aspects of the dictionaries, the author
identifies the sections of these dictionaries which successfully present information in
a way that will be most beneficial for their intended audiences. The study goes on to pinpoint less-successful sections of the two dictionaries and provides suggestions for
improvement. In sum, this study focuses on using the principle of Function Theory to
determine what features should be included in Mandarin learner’s dictionaries to make
them more suitable for elementary and intermediate learners of Mandarin at
Stellenbosch University, in South Africa, and, by extension, in other parts of the world.
'n woordeboek spesifieke tipes gebruikers in spesifieke situasies analiseer. Hierdie
