<p>The purpose of this study is to give an insight in how home care givers with different ethnic background, other than European, experience their work as home care givers. It is a qualitative study based on interviews and observations of four different home care givers. Among the questions studied include; if ethnicity is a resource or not, how does it affect home care givers in doing their work? What importance does it have on the organisation as a home care entrepreneur? Has the home care entrepreneur a perspective of diversity? The results of the study have been analyzed with the help of symbolic interaction. The results have led us to conclude that the home care givers have a professional identity, which does not include an ethnic identity. Further more results indicate that ethnicity has a limited impact on the home care givers of non European origin that have not experienced discrimination. For the home care givers who earlier on in their carrier(s) have had experiences of discrimination, exist uncertainties, especially during their first visit in the homes. How the home care entrepreneur give guidelines to solving problems and conflicts between client and home care givers are of great significance.</p>

Cognitive Diversity and the Progress of Science

Science benefits from substantial cognitive diversity because cognitive diversity promotes scientific progress toward greater accuracy. Without diversity of goals, beliefs, and methods, science would neither generate novel discoveries nor certify representations with its present effectiveness. The revolution in geosciences is a principal case study.The role of cognitive diversity in discovery is explored with attention to computational results. Discovery and certification are inseparable. Moreover, diverse scientific groups agree convergently, and their agreements manifest an explanatory defense akin to the explanatory defense of realism. Scientists accept representations as a matter of their instrumental success in individual scientific research. Because scientists are diverse, this standard of acceptance means that widespread acceptance involves widespread instrumental success. This success is best explained through the accuracy of topics of agreement.The pessimistic induction is addressed; it fails to undermine the explanatory defense because past scientific successes don't resemble present ones in their degree of instrumental success; to make this point, instrumental success of representations of caloric and of oxygen are compared.Cognitive diversity challenges the methodological uniformity of scientific practice. Science lacks uniform methods and aims, and it ought to. It is argued that there is no sound basis for thinking that science aims. Moreover, the growth of science itself is not the growth of knowledge. Scientific communities rather than individual scientists are the main certifiers of scientific results. Hence, since knowledge requires a certifying belief formation process but the process relevant to science is not realized individually, science does not progress toward knowledge. The epistemology of science is socialized, but remains broadly realist because, even without a method of inquiry, science develops accurate representations of unobservable nature.

The Consequences of Buffelgrass Pasture Development for Biodiversity in the Southern Sonoran Desert

Decades of overgrazing have left many rangelands in northwestern Mexico in poor condition. This has led to the practice of converting native rangeland plant communities to buffelgrass pastures. Buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare) is a perennial bunchgrass native to Africa. Both the extent of buffelgrass pastures within Mexico and the impacts of land conversion on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In the present study I address the effects of land conversion on the productivity and diversity of rangelands in the southern Sonoran Desert in the state of Sonora, Mexico. First, using satellite imagery from the Landsat mission, I found that rates of land conversion in the most heavily affected region of Sonora have continued to accelerate over the past three decades and that productivity of buffelgrass pastures is lower than that of native rangeland. Next, I examined the impacts of land conversion on the diversity and structure of plant communities and ant assemblages across a rainfall driven gradient of productivity in central Sonora. The regional extent of this land use change allowed me to explore the interaction between site productivity and land conversion. Within native rangeland I detected strong positive relationships between productivity and the species richness of perennial plant communities, but only weak positive relationships between productivity and species richness of ant assemblages. These results were discussed in the context of species diversity theory. Land conversion reduced the species richness of perennial plant communities by approximately 50% at both local and regional scales, whereas the species richness of ant assemblages was reduced by 17% at the local scale and only 8% at the regional scale. I found no evidence for an interaction between site productivity and land conversion in either plant communities or ant assemblages. The implications of these findings for long-term trajectories of biodiversity in the southern Sonoran Desert are discussed.

Culture, Community and the Multicultural Individual

Every theory of liberal multiculturalism is premised on some account of the nature of culture, cultural difference and social reality, or what I call “the conditions of multiculturality”. In this dissertation, I offer a revised account of the conditions and challenge of multiculturality. Beginning with the widely accepted idea that individuals depend on both culture and community as social preconditions for choice, freedom and autonomy, and informing this idea with collectivist and individualist lessons from Tyler Burge’s famous externalist thought-experiment, my analysis shows that social contexts are multicultural when they are characterized by a plurality of social communities offering distinct sets of cultural norms, and individuals are multicultural to the extent that they are capable of using cultural norms from various social communities. The depth, pervasiveness, and complexity of multiculturality raises important normative questions about fair and just terms for protecting and promoting social communities under conditions of internal and external cultural contestation, and these questions are not only restricted to cases involving internal minorities. As a theory of cultural justice, liberal multiculturalism must respond to the challenge of multiculturality generated by cultural difference per se, but it cannot do so adequately in all cases armed with only the traditional tools of toleration, freedom of association and exit, fundamental rights and freedoms, and internal political autonomy. My analysis demonstrates that, upon the revised conception of multiculturality, liberal theories of tolerationism, egalitarianism and nationalism leave significant cultural remainders, or unaccounted for cultural interests. What is needed is a different liberal multiculturalism, which respects the individual’s fundamental rights and freedoms, is committed to the equal and just treatment of individuals, tolerates voluntary cultural groups and practices in the social sphere, recognizes an individual right to culture, and provides some measure of state assistance to individuals seeking to protect and promote their cultural communities in the private sphere. "It's not on my 'to do' list" : the discursive construction of workplace diversity

This qualitative study explored the communicative strategies used by employees for discussing diversity and diversity initiatives in the workplace. The study also examined employees' definitions of diversity and the effectiveness of diversity efforts within the organization. Self-directed focus groups of employees within an organization were used to collect data. Four groups were composed of employees based on designated diversity characteristics: White male, Black female, White female, and workers over 50. This study served to bridge the gap between diversity and organizational communication literature. Thematic interpretive analysis was guided by theories of the discursive construction of prejudice and co-cultural communication. Identified strategies were cross-checked with key informants in the organization to verify validity. Finally, the study discussed implications of findings for practice and for future research. / Department of Communication Studies

An examination of senior black, Asian and minority ethnic women and men's identity work following episodes of identity salience at work

This study addresses methodological critiques of ethnicity research in organisations by combining intersectionality and identity work frameworks. Additionally, it extends intersectionality beyond its traditional focus on multiple disadvantage and demonstrates contextual sensitivity to ethnicity. Taking an individual constructivist stance, I examined ethnicity and its intersection with gender and seniority through an identity work lens. The research question was: How do senior black, Asian and minority ethnic women and men make meaning of episodes that raise the salience of their intersecting identities at work? The study investigated how 24 senior black, Asian and minority ethnic (BME) women and men constructed an understanding of their multiple-identified selves in response to affirming, contradictory or ambiguous identity-heightening work experiences. Respondents kept journals about episodes that raised the salience of their intersecting identities. Then, in interviews, they described the sense they made of the episodes and their responses to them. Following a template-based analysis of 101 accounts, a typology emerged of Accommodating, Refuting, Reconciling, Affirming and Exploratory identity work modes, describing senior BME individuals’ identity construction in response to identity-heightening episodes. I introduce ‘intersectional identity work’ to illustrate how individual (e.g. cognitive effort to reconcile a paradox), relational (e.g. a sense of responsibility and affinity for subordinate minority colleagues) and contextual (e.g. visibility resulting from demographic distribution in one’s immediate environment) factors influence intersecting senior, ethnic and gender constructions at work. Integrating intersectional and identity work perspectives to examine ethnicity demonstrates the dynamic interplay of multiple identity dimensions during meaning-making, the range of modes adopted and the intensity of effort expended by senior BME women and men during personal meaning-making. This approach makes a methodological contribution to ethnicity and intersectionality research. It also makes an empirical contribution to UK ethnicity and identity work research through the suggestive model of identity work modes and rich insight into senior BME individuals’ experiences at the juxtaposition of disadvantage and privilege.
