An XML-based knowledge management system of port information for U.S. Coast Guard Cutters

Stewart, Jeffrey D. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / This thesis describes the development of a prototype application which collects, manages, and distributes knowledge gained by Coast Guard cutter crews making port calls throughout the world. The system uses XML technologies in server/client and stand alone environments. With a web browser, the user views and navigates the system's content from a downloaded file collection or from a centralized data source via a network connection. Users add and modify content with Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) forms using their existing network connections. Client-side data access and navigation, as well as data storage, is performed using non-proprietary standards developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The prototype application's purpose is to fulfill the strategic goal of achieving superiority of maritime domain awareness over the areas in which the Coast Guard operates. The need for this application is based upon the lack of specific information from currently available reference publications, the absence of a system to distribute port call knowledge, and the data bandwidth limitations of cutters at sea. The need for knowledge retention aboard cutters is elevated by shortened crewmember assignment lengths due to the stressful and arduous duties of life at sea. / Lieutenant, U.S. Coast Guard

Hybrid semantic-document models

Clowes, Darren January 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents the concept of hybrid semantic-document models to aid information management when using standards for complex technical domains such as military data communication. These standards are traditionally text based documents for human interpretation, but prose sections can often be ambiguous and can lead to discrepancies and subsequent implementation problems. Many organisations produce semantic representations of the material to ensure common understanding and to exploit computer aided development. In developing these semantic representations, no relationship is maintained to the original prose. Maintaining relationships between the original prose and the semantic model has key benefits, including assessing conformance at a semantic level, and enabling original content authors to explicitly define their intentions, thus reducing ambiguity and facilitating computer aided functionality. Through the use of a case study method based on the military standard MIL-STD-6016C, a framework of relationships is proposed. These relationships can integrate with common document modelling techniques and provide the necessary functionality to allow semantic content to be mapped into document views. These relationships are then generalised for applicability to a wider context. Additionally, this framework is coupled with a templating approach which, for repeating sections, can improve consistency and further enhance quality. A reflective approach to model driven web rendering is presented and evaluated. This reflective approach uses self-inspection at runtime to read directly from the model, thus eliminating the need for any generative processes which result in data duplication across source used for different purpose.

Théorie et pratique du naturalisme dans l'ɶuvre romanesque de Joris-Karl Huysmans (1874-1883) / Theory and practice of naturalism in Joris-Karl's novel Huysmans (1874-1883)

Jouini, Asma 08 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with the work of Huysmans ranging from his first writings until the eve of his disagreement with Zola; À Rebours being the point of disjunction between an initial period of setting up and a series of multiple literary experiences where the naturalistic method is the guarantor of unity. For if naturalistic writing was, at some point in the life of Huysmans, a form of initiation, it has not ceased to be a way of thinking and the author claims this naturalist part even in his most mystical novels. Huysmans therefore wants to write a book while avoiding idealizing the world, that is to say, a non-fiction book. Through this, he takes part in the naturalist movement. For, to banish the intrusions of the author, in the name of experimental objectivity, is one of the foundations of the naturalist current. But paradoxically, by pushing the theoretical discourse of the experimental novel to the end of its logic, Huysmans' writing will lead to a sort of break-up of the traditional structure of the novel, as evidenced some years later the writing of À Rebours. Indeed, Huysmans draws in his own way Zola's naturalist theory. He quickly realized that this theory will lead to a dead end and that we must go to the edge of this experience in order to be able to pass on to others. But this stage of its formation definitely marked it, especially as a method of documentation. The literary experience of Huysmans during this decade is symptomatic of a more general state and makes it clear that the novel rests on a moving field.

Extracting Episodic Knowledge from Documents to Support Decision Making

Chuang, Kun-Han 27 July 2006 (has links)
Knowledge management is an important weapon for business competition. Many organizations are adopting knowledge management systems. For knowledge management, document management is its key foundation. There is a large amount of procedural knowledge existing in decision documents. This knowledge can illustrate the process and considerations in a decision situation, called episodic. The episodic knowledge can help decision makers understand historical decision process and considerations for future decision making. Therefore, how to discover decision episodes from existing documents is a major research issue in knowledge management. This research proposes a method for episode mining that integrates automatic document summary techniques, knowledge ontology, and index structures to build the relations and processes of events, and use the Gantt Chart and Flow Chart to portray event processes. We build a prototype system and use a news event as our example to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach and demonstrate the results.

Řešení správy dokumentů ve firmě E-solutions, s.r.o. / Řešení správy dokumentů ve firmě E-solutions, s.r.o.

Švanda, Jan January 2008 (has links)
Presented thesis is focused to the document management system in the firm E-solutions, Ld. Selection of this firm is purposeful, because I have been working in the firm for several years. My thesis is targeted to the complex analysis of document management system (DMS) in the firm and the results of the analysis will be used for the implementation of new DMS. The target is accomplished by following steps, which can be expressed as partial concrete goals: First, the present situation of DMS in the firm is described, next, the detail description of the documents, the system should work with, is presented. Description of these documents is structured to the DMS needs. Subsequently firm processes which should DMS support are identified and analysed. These processes are converted to the optimal conditions to maximize their effectiveness in the DMS support. Integral part of the analysis is the consistent collection of the requirements to the new system. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part describes DMS generally, explains basic principles of DMS (characteristics, documentation and functionality) and creates base line for the practical part. The more comprehensive practical part of the thesis is directed to the document management in the firm E-solutions, Ld. Presentation of the basic information about the firm is followed by detail solution of partial goals. Assessment of the achieved results creates the final part of the work. The thesis will serve in the firm or at a contactor of DMS as the base for the selection, parameterisation and implementation of the concrete DMS solution.
