Development of canned line-start rim-driven electric machines

Tuohy, Paul Michael January 2011 (has links)
Electric machines are being deployed in industrial applications where previously only mechanical systems were considered, as environmental concerns from burning fossil fuels and energy costs are becoming a more dominant factor in system design considerations. Electric machines offer greater operational flexibility and typically higher efficiencies. There has therefore been a growing demand to develop electric machines to replace traditional mechanical systems in a number of industrial applications. One such suitable electric machine topology is the 'direct-drive' machine. These machines can be used where implementation does not require a high operating speed, therefore eliminating the necessity of a gearbox. Furthermore, direct-drive machines offer a number of advantages including reductions in through-life costs, noise and vibration, and overall system volume. This thesis explores the development of direct-drive rim-driven machines, constructed by integrating a propeller with the electric machine that is driving it, by mounting the machine directly around the outside of the propeller. A novel machine topology was developed by integrating a conducting-can onto the rotor structure capable of producing induction torque, to create a motor that can start directly from the main electric supply. This eliminated the need for a power electronic converter, gearbox and complicated drive shafts arrangement, for use in applications where only a low duty cycle of operation was required such as secondary propulsion systems for marine applications or where safety and reliability is of significant importance. A number of other industrial applications that may benefit from this canned rim-driven topology were also identified including seal-less pumps and 'run-of-the-river' generators. Permanent-magnet and induction motor topologies operating in fluid environments were investigated, using finite element analysis and thermal analysis techniques, to examine and optimise the design of the rim-driven topology for a specific operational requirement, in each industrial application area identified. A 30 kW canned line-start rim-drive induction motor was designed and developed for use as a bi-directional thruster on-board a tidal stream turbine. A novel induction motor topology was developed utilising only a conducting-can on the rotor, which eliminated the need for a traditional squirrel-cage, due to the ratio of the relatively large mean air-gap diameter to the small output power requirement; creating a simple yet reliable direct-drive canned induction motor. The design of this motor was manufactured and successfully tested to validate the design process.

Mate : a vehicle for commuting kids

Engberg, Martin January 2020 (has links)
How would an AV allow kids to commute to school and extra activties by themselves in 2040? Mate is a vision of an interior inviting kids to commute by themselves, questioning how an autonomous vehicle could be designed. It is inspired by interior designs for kids intended for creativity and fun. Mate is intended for future child friendly cities and how they could incorporate fully autonomous zones which would allow for less safety requirements and lead to more freedom in the design of the vehicle. Looking at how companies today have services for commuting kids and what is needed for parents and childs to feel safe using these was also a vital aspect. After understanding the future context of the vehicle, the design process started with exploring different concepts for the interior. This led to a chosen concept which then were checked in a package. A revision of this package led to new design restraints which enabled new ideas to spur. It became apparant childrens different heights were a major factor for the interior seats. A mock up was made both in real life and in 3D. Therefore the design was changed to accomodate different heights leading to the idea of the final idea which was visualised in vision renderings leading up to the final 3D development. The Mate is a small autonomous shared vehicle for 2040 which fits 4 kids in the age range of 8 to 13. It´s interior is in colors which reflect a younger audience. It´s shapes are soft and help reflect safety and fun. The seating is in the window areas which allows for new ways of enjoying the outside view but also talking with the other occupants. The seats are able to fit the kids different heights and allows for two different seating positions. Lights show the kids where to be seated while also having sound to accomodate the kids getting off and on at the right place. Mate also communicates with the parents and allows for the kids to be autonomous.

Ces adolescents qui disparaissent : Clinique du regard et de la voix au temps de l'adolescence / These teenagers who disappear : Clinic of the look and the voice in the time of the adolescence

Sarnette, Florent 17 December 2016 (has links)
The adolescent’s clinic brings the psychologist to question the place of the look and the voice during this passing through time. Even if these two items are central in the subject’s birth, their knotting becomes uncertain at the time of adolescence. Teenage runaways, in what we could refer as « disappearance » happens as the testimony the unknotting : that one of the look and the voice. Thus, to disappear, is to draw off the silence of Other one, a vociferous silence, structured like a jaundiced eye. It is a question, then, to create a place, a space — the one of disappearence — from where the return can be thought.

AC Direct Drive LED Lighting Using Low Cost Analog Components

Head, Miles 01 May 2019 (has links)
This project explores the rapidly expanding area of AC direct drive for LED lighting. AC LED driving does not use typical DC-DC converter-based driving but uses semiconductor switches and a linear regulator to activate a number of LEDs proportional to the input voltage at any given time. This allows bulky, expensive magnetics to be eliminated from the system. The goal of this project was to design a scaled-down physical AC LED direct drive system to validate the conclusions of methods for improving efficiency from a previous investigation that found minimizing voltage across the linear regulating MOSFET led to higher efficiency at the cost of increased input current THD. This project found that this conclusion is physically realizable, with a final efficiency of 94.46% and an input current THD of 58.9%. This result was achieved by taking the previous investigation’s final design as a starting point and replacing ideal switches and control signals with discrete components. The final version uses a set of comparators and sense resistors to determine when a given LED stack should be on for a simple, analog control solution. Once the system was simulated this way, the assembled version was used to measure efficiency, power factor, current THD, flicker index, and DC supply power. Additional plots of the stack voltages and control signals were collected to verify proper operation and compare to simulation. The final measurements aligned with trends from simulation and result in a simple AC direct drive solution that requires no specialty ICs.

„Direct Drive Simulation“ - Entwicklung spezieller präoperativer Hörtestverfahren vor Implantation aktiver Mittelohrprothesen / Direct-Drive-Audiometry and Direct-Drive-Auditory Brainstem Response – new subjective and objective audiologic measurements before the Implantation of Middle-Ear-Implants

Hallak, Basel January 2021 (has links) (PDF)
Background: The direct drive simulation (DDS) offers patients a preoperative sound simulation of the active middle ear implant "Vibrant Soundbridge®". The floating mass transducer (FMT) is placed on the eardrum or on the tympanic membrane graft, where the signals are applied. The aim of this study was first to evaluate and develop a specific Direct Drive-Pure-Tone-Audiometry (DD-PTA) as well as a Direct-Drive-Speech-Audiometry (DD-SA) and if feasible, expand the test to an objective audiometric test, the Direct-Drive-Auditory Brainstem Response (DD-ABR). 20 normal hearing subjects were tested. Summary: DD-PTA, DD-SA and DD-ABR are possible examinations that could be used in the daily hospital routine. The DD-ABR threshold correlates well with the DD-PTA. For the first time DD-ABR offers the possibility of an objective DDS-test. DD-PTA is the key tool to evaluate the coupling quality which is a precondition for correct interpretation of the DD-ABR.
