Energy Performance Simulations of a Scania Truck Cabin

Verde, Leo, Axenholm Strömberg, Niklas January 2020 (has links)
The vast majority of trucks in the European Union are reliant on fossil fuels as their primary mode of propulsion. In efforts to decarbonise the truck transport sector manufacturers are developing electrified trucks. An electrification may serve to reduce the tailpipe emissions of trucks, but it introduces a new challenge to supply the cabin with energy. This energy is primarily used to maintain a comfortable cabin climate for the driver and passenger. In order to maximise the range of an electric truck the cabin energy requirement needs to be minimised. This thesis evaluates the current energy performance of a Scania S20H cabin through experimental testing as well as simulations using the simulation software GT-SUITE. Based on the results from the tests and the models, energy saving concepts were generated and their performance was evaluated. The experimental tests were performed on a truck in a climate chamber where the ambient temperatures, HVAC system fan speeds, air recirculation rate and inlet air temperatures were varied. The test data was used to build a one-dimensional simulation model in GT-ISE as well as a three-dimensional model in GT-TAITherm. The one-dimensional model was calibrated against 10 experimental tests and yielded an average relative error for the chosen temperature calibration parameters between 0.05% and 0.43%. The one-dimensional model showed that the largest energy loss was through air evacuation and air leakage, accounting for 70-90% of the input energy. The structural energy losses were primarily through the windshield and the side windows, accounting for 32% and 23% of the total structural losses respectively. Energy saving concepts in the form of low emissivity window glazing, double pane windows, xenon filled gas panel insulation and low levels of air recirculation were simulated. The best and most plausible combination of the aforementioned concepts yielded an average input energy decrease of 31.6%, air loss decrease of 32.9% and a structural loss decrease of 27.6% compared to the simulated base cases. The three-dimensional model was calibrated against one test case and yielded an average relative error of 0.15% for the chosen temperature calibration parameter. One energy saving concept in the form of double pane side windows in conjunction with low emissivity glazing on all windows was simulated. This concept had a slight impact in raising the average cabin air temperature and the interior surface temperatures of the windows. The surface temperature change resulted in a decrease of cold downdraught from the top roof window and the driver side window. In conclusion, the models work as intended providing a time efficient way of evaluating the energy performance of structural changes. In order to improve the performance, usefulness and accuracy of the models the initial values should be more exact. This can be achieved by standardised testing procedures as well as data collection with wind speed.

The Musical Representation of Jewish Faith in Ernest Bloch's 1923 "Baal Shem Suite"

Swartz, Eric Gregory 05 1900 (has links)
Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) was a Swiss-American composer of music expressing his Jewish nationality. Through his music, he wanted to convey the importance of Jewish faith in countering antisemitism in the early 20th century. This thesis focuses on Bloch's employment of Jewish liturgical modes and melodic embellishments in his 1923 Baal Shem Suite. The Baal Shem Suite is a three-movement piece for violin and piano and is named after the Baal Shem Tov, founder of the Jewish Hasidic movement. As discussed in the document, the piece portrays Hasidic traditions. This thesis provides a Schenkerian analysis of motivic ideas derived from the Jewish modes and their embellishments, while also describing how both elements evoke Jewish spirituality. The document also identifies resemblances between motives in Bloch's suite and preexisting Jewish melodies. As the thesis states, Bloch likely drew inspiration from cantillation of the Hebrew Bible. He was also likely inspired by 19th-century "Jewish pieces" by Franz Schubert and another Jewish composer named David Popper. The document also references 20th century Jewish composers after Bloch who were likely inspired by his Baal Shem Suite. The thesis also identifies the liturgical modes and embellishments employed in some of the composers' musical works.

Richter, Miroslav January 2009 (has links)
Split delivery vehicle rating problem is one of the most studied combinatorial optimization problems in operations research. According to the mathematical difficultness, there should be many problems to find the optimal solution. Therefore, there are many exact algorithms and heuristics, which tries to find the best solution in the short period of time. The theoretical part of this thesis describes the basic facts of the split delivery vehicle routing problem and its heuristics. The practical part focuses on the practical usage of the split delivery vehicle routing problem. The main goals of this thesis are the practical usage of this vehicle routing problem and assistance in strategic decision establishing of the secondary store.

Architectures et fonctions avancées pour le déploiement progressif de réseaux orientés contenus / Architectures and advanced functions for a progressive deployment of Information-Centric Networking

Marchal, Xavier 07 June 2019 (has links)
Internet historical protocols (TCP/IP) that were used to interconnect the very first comput-ers are no longer suitable for the massive distribution of content that is now being made. New content-based network protocols (Information-Centric Networking) are currently being designed to optimize these exchanges by betting on a paradigm shift where content, rather than machines, are addressable across the Internet. However, such a change can only be made gradually and if all operational imperatives are met. Thus, this thesis aims to study and remove the main tech-nological obstacles preventing the adoption of the NDN (Name Data Networking) protocol by operators by guaranteeing the security, performance, interoperability, proper management and automated deployment of an NDN network. First, we evaluate the current performance of an NDN network thanks to a tool we made, named ndnperf, and observe the high cost for a provider delivering fresh content using this protocol. Then, we propose some optimizations to improve the efficiency of packet generation up to 6.4 times better than the default parameters. Afterwards, we focus on the security of the NDN protocol with the evaluation of the content poisoning attack, known as the second more critical attack on NDN, but never truly characterized. Our study is based on two scenarios, with the usage of a malicious user and content provider, or by exploiting a flaw we found in the packet processing flow of the NDN router. Thus, we show the danger of this kind of attacks and propose a software fix to prevent the most critical scenario. Thirdly, we are trying to adapt the HTTP protocol in a way so that it can be transported on an NDN network for interoperability purposes. To do this, we designed an adaptation protocol and developed two gateways that perform the necessary conversions so that web content can seamlessly enter or exit an NDN network. After describing our solution, we evaluate and improve it in order to make web content benefit from a major NDN feature, the in-network caching, and show up to 61.3% cache-hit ratio in synthetic tests and 25.1% in average for browsing simulations with multiple users using a Zipf law of parameter 1.5. Finally, we propose a virtualized and orchestrated microservice architecture for the deploy-ment of an NDN network following the Network Fonction Virtualization (NFV) paradigm. We developed seven microservices that represent either an atomic function of the NDN router or a new one for specific purposes. These functions can then be chained to constitute a full-fledged network. Our architecture is orchestrated with the help of a manager that allows it to take the full advantages of the microservices like scaling the bottleneck functions or dynamically change the topology for the current needs (an attack for example). Our architecture, associated with our other contributions on performance, security and in-teroperability, allows a better and more realistic deployment of NDN, especially with an easier development of new features, a network running on standard hardware, and the flexibility allowed by this kind of architecture.

Porovnání open source BI platforem / Open Source BI Platforms Comparison

Jedlička, Tomáš January 2011 (has links)
Diploma thesis focuses on open source business intelligence platforms. The main aim of this thesis is to compare open source BI platforms Pentaho BI Suite and Jaspersoft BI Suite using a set of criteria on the example of the solution for a fictive company. In order to achieve this goal, the research for criteria in already existing comparisons is made firstly and on the basis of this own comparative criteria and their weights are defined. Then important features of platforms under the BI solution primary layers are characterized. In the conclusion both platforms are evaluated and compared according to the result values of all criteria. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part deals with the analysis and definition of criteria and the BI platform introduction. Used criteria are analyzed in the Gartner research, in the book about business intelligence and in two diploma theses. Own defined criteria are divided into following groups: Installation, ETL, OLAP, Reporting and Documentation. The introduction includes description of components, licence politics and available editions. In the practical part the platform functionality is tested, the project created in both of them is specified and then platforms are evaluated and compared. The functionality testing is made progressively from installation, through ETL and OLAP to reporting. The main aim of this thesis is completed in the last chapter of the practical part, where both platforms are evaluated according to the set of defined criteria, first of all under the BI solution primary layers and then also from general point of view. Here is used the weighted sum method from the multi-criteria decision analysis. The contribution of this thesis is in the transparent confrontation of two open source BI platforms, in the definition of the comparative criteria set and also in the presentation of all tools strengths and weaknesses including screenshots.

Toward a Critical Edition of Gordon Jacob's William Byrd Suite: A Comparison of Extant Editions with The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book

Trachsel, Andrew Jason 08 1900 (has links)
Despite being recognized as one of the most important compositions in the twentieth¬ century wind band repertoire, the William Byrd Suite presents many obstacles for the conductor and ensemble members. Since its initial publication in 1924, the piece has contained many discrepancies of pitch, articulation, rhythm, dynamics, and phrase completion that appear in the score as well as the parts. Although the work was reissued by Boosey & Hawkes in 1960 and 1991, many of the original errors remained intact. The sheer amount of inconsistencies causes great difficulties for the musicians involved in the rehearsal process, slowing efficiency and resulting in a frustrating impediment to a quality performance. The primary purpose of this study was the creation of a critical edition of Jacob's William Byrd Suite that eliminates errors of extant editions, incorporates modern instrumentation, and considers the source material. To accomplish this, the present project looks at all sources, including the autograph manuscript, orchestral version, published editions, and errata. The editorial process examines the governing philosophy, subsequent editorial decisions and indications, and the final organization of the parts. The study concludes with the inclusion of the full score of the new critical edition.
