Experiences of Governance in the Context of Community-Based Research: Structures, Problems and Theory

Runnels, Vivien E. January 2011 (has links)
Governance is a response to a recognition that traditional forms of decision-making have become inadequate to address complex societal and health problems generated by significant social and global changes (Chhotray & Stoker, 2009). The contributions of scientific and technical knowledge towards solving these complex problems have also been recognized as insufficient (Jasanoff, 2007). Community-based research (CBR) is an approach to research which is designed to make use of the knowledge of community and university members and their participation and collaboration ―in all phases of the research process, with a shared goal of producing knowledge that will be translated into action or positive change for the community‖ (Lantz, Israel, Schulz & Reyes, 2006, p. 239). However, although the contributions of lay knowledge have been acknowledged, how governance or collaborative decision-making is arranged in the context of community-based research is not well described in the literature. In order to address this knowledge gap, a study was undertaken in which in-depth interviews were conducted with community and university members of Canadian CBR collaborations to determine their governing experiences. Results are reported in a thesis by research papers. The first paper focuses on describing the governance structures that CBR collaborations used. In the second paper, the nature and content of problems which occurred in governing CBR collaborations, point to the importance of theory for conceptualizing and solving governance problems. To develop a theory of participation in governance of community-based research, the third paper uses Arnstein‘s theory of participation to propose a grounded theoretical basis for implementing participation in governance of CBR collaborations (Arnstein, 1969). Governance is a means of organizing, shaping and steering a course of decision-making. Governance is a critical component in the organization of knowledge production. Study and theory of governance in community-based research may help in improving understanding and implementation of a critical population health practice.

Risk Management Integration and Corporate Governance

Duba, Peter January 2008 (has links)
Diplomová práce zkoumá nejdřív funkci a posléze proces řízení rizik v rámci banky z hlediska zejména neoinstitucionální a behaviorální finanční teorie. V další části práce je zkoumáno smysluplné začlenění procesu řízení rizik v rámci organizační struktury banky v kontextu konfliktních cílů maximalizace zisku a minimalizace rizika.

Big Data Governance / Big Data Governance

Blahová, Leontýna January 2016 (has links)
This master thesis is about Big Data Governance and about software, which is used for this purposes. Because Big Data are huge opportunity and also risk, I wanted to map products which can be easily use for Data Quality and Big Data Governance in one platform. This thesis is not only on theoretical knowledge level, but also evaluates five key products (from my point of view). I defined requirements for every kind of domain and then I set up the weights and points. The main objective is to evaluate software capabilities and compere them.

Foreign IPO capital market choice: understanding the institutional fit of corporate governance

Moore, Curt B., Filatotchev, Igor, Bell, R. Greg, Rasheed, Abdul A. 08 1900 (has links) (PDF)
While product market choices have been central to strategy formulation for firms in the past, the integration of financial markets makes the choice of capital markets an equally important strategic decision. We advance a comparative institutional perspective to explain capital market choice by firms making an IPO in a foreign market. We find that internal governance characteristics (founder-CEO, executive incentives, and board independence) and external network characteristics (prestigious underwriters, degree of venture capitalist syndication, and board interlocks) are significant predictors of foreign capital market choice by foreign IPO firms. Our results suggest foreign IPO firms select a host market where the firms' governance characteristics and third party affiliations fit the host market's institutional environment.

The association between firm-level corporate governance and corporate cash holdings: evidence from some emerging markets

Meloa, Tebogo January 2014 (has links)
A wealth of studies indicates that good corporate governance has a positive impact on company performance. However, it is not always understood how this positive relationship is achieved. In firms where shareholders and management are misaligned and agency costs are high, cash and cash equivalents can be used in ways that lead to poor company performance and to the destruction of shareholder value. In addition to this problem, very few studies on corporate governance focus on emerging markets: “most studies of corporate governance focus on one or a few wealthy economies” (La Porta, Lopez-De-Silanes, Shleifer & Vishny, 1998, p.1117). Therefore, the focus of this study was to address these two main issues. The author of this report set out to understand the impact of corporate governance on corporate cash holdings by focusing on emerging markets. This was first done by reviewing the extensive literature on agency theory, firm-level corporate governance, cash holdings and the three hypotheses for reasons why firms hold cash. Firm-level corporate governance, corporate cash holdings and total assets data was collected for 620 firms in 17 emerging market economies using Thomson Reuters DataStream for the period 2009 to 2012. The data was then used to determine whether firm-level corporate governance, board characteristics, shareholder rights and vision and strategy are associated with corporate cash holdings. The study found that for the selected sample, firm-level corporate governance is negatively correlated to corporate cash holdings in emerging markets. This implies that the flexibility hypothesis is the dominant reason why firms hold cash in emerging markets. Emerging market firms tend to hoard cash because it provides the flexibility for these firms to take advantage of profitable opportunities as they present themselves. This outcome is contrary to the results obtained in prior studies done on firms in developed economies: these firms tend to spend cash quickly on acquisitions and capital projects (spending hypothesis) or they keep cash to avoid under-investing in case they cannot access external credit lines.(shareholder power hypothesis). / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / pagibs2015 / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / Unrestricted

Hybrid governance in the global south: a case study of collusion within the South African construction industry

Kasipo, Mafaro January 2020 (has links)
What is the nature of hybrid governance in the Global South? In the African context, a statecentric conceptualisation of governance fails to capture the nuances and realities of governance where non-state actors often fulfil duties that are traditionally the responsibility of the Weberian state. It is against this background that this dissertation seeks to contribute to hybridity literature by exploring the relationships between the state and the construction industry through a case study of collusion in the South African construction industry to build the 2010 FIFA World Cup stadiums. The research goes beyond arguing for a plurality of governance actors and draws on the concept of hybridity to highlight the contestations that characterise the relationship between the different governance actors. The original contribution to hybridity literature made by this research lies in examining how the state and the construction industry enact authority in a setting of hybrid governance. To analyse the process of hybridisation I draw on the concepts of corruption, authority and governmentality as lenses through which to analyse the rationalities, strategies and practices used in the enactment of authority. The research findings reveal that the process of hybridisation as the state and construction industry articulate authority is characterised by contradictions, blurring and boundary-making. The findings suggest that the manifestations of these characteristics during hybridisation is context specific and should be empirically determined.

Role of civil society organisations in the realisation of human rights in Africa and the effect of regulatory mechanisms on their functions : Ethiopia and Ghana perspective

Teferi, Desset A. 10 October 1900 (has links)
It is generally acknowledged that development is impossible in the absence of true democracy, respect for human rights, peace and good governance1 Good governance and human rights are mutually reinforcing. In turn, ‘good governance and good public administration are essential aspects of democracy and for achieving democracy a freely functioning, well organised, vibrant and responsible civil society is indispensable.’Democracy presupposes free elections, functioning political parties, independent media and active civil society organisations (CSOs) that can operate freely.4 Human rights are better promoted and protected in a democratic system.5 Accordingly it is submitted that a measure taken by a government which undermines key elements and role players of such a system tends to undermine the protection and promotion of human rights. / Thesis (LLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)) -- University of Pretoria, 2010. / A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Law University of Pretoria, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Masters of Law (LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa). The banking sector’s response to environmental sustainability

Dlamini, Thokozani H 05 April 2011 (has links)
The major theme of this research has been to understand the South African banking sector’s response to environmental sustainability. The research was both qualitative and quantitative in nature. To elicit understanding of these responses, semi-structured interviews were undertaken with representatives from seven South African banks. The research interviews revolved around four core themes; the environmental drivers, environmental strategy implementation, the corresponding practices undertaken and their frame of reference according to the sustainable value framework, together with the relevant benefits and costs realised. The key research findings of the study include: all of the banks have either formalised or are in the process of formalizing a response to the pursuit of environmental sustainability; the banks either have or are in the process of developing a sustainability strategy; the growing environmental concerns and credit risks are currently the primary drivers of pursuing environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the practices adopted by the banks to pursue environmental sustainability were currently internally focused with priority for operational quick wins addressing risk and cost reduction. Based on the research findings, recommendations have been made to further enhance the pursuit of environmental sustainability. These include: integration of environmental sustainability factors in performance reporting for all business units; integration of environmental sustainability criteria in all business case assessments.
