Eliminating Data Redundancy: Our Solution for Database Discovery using Alma/Primo

East Tennessee State University recently adopted Alma & Primo and was suprised by the lack of an A-Z database discovery module. Frustrated by having to maintain electronic resources separately on our library website and in Alma, we embarked on a goal to eliminate redundancy and use Alma/Primo exclusively. This presentation will cover our entire workflow in both Alma & Primo and the issues we encountered along the way. I'll first go over our process in Alma including MARC record creation, electronic collection setup, and the top level collection module. Next, I'll cover our workflow in Primo including normalization rules, scoping, PNX display, facets, and code table changes. The last section will cover the Primo X-Services API and how it was developed into an A-Z Database list.

Building a Better Book Widget: Using Alma Analytics to Automate New Book Discovery

Are we doing enough to market newly acquired book titles? Libraries purchase and subscribe to many new book titles each year, both print and electronic. However, we rely on the expectation that users will periodically search our systems to discover newly acquired titles. Static lists and displays have been traditional marketing methods for libraries, but require tedious time and effort to maintain. Without a practical solution for an academic library, East Tennessee State University developed an automated process to generate book widgets utilizing data from Alma Analytics. These widgets are now deployed in our subject guides, website, and on our digital displays. This article outlines the development and implementation of these widgets. We also discuss the challenges we encountered, such as finding image covers and custom subject tagging.

A situation refinement model for complex event processing

Complex Event Processing (CEP) systems aim at processing large flows of events to discover situations of interest (SOI). Primarily, CEP uses predefined pattern templates to detect occurrences of complex events in an event stream. Extracting complex event is achieved by employing techniques such as filtering and aggregation to detect complex patterns of many simple events. In general, CEP systems rely on domain experts to de fine complex pattern rules to recognize SOI. However, the task of fine tuning complex pattern rules in the event streaming environment face two main challenges: the issue of increased pattern complexity and the event streaming constraints where such rules must be acquired and processed in near real-time. Therefore, to fine-tune the CEP pattern to identify SOI, the following requirements must be met: First, a minimum number of rules must be used to re fine the CEP pattern to avoid increased pattern complexity, and second, domain knowledge must be incorporated in the refinement process to improve awareness about emerging situations. Furthermore, the event data must be processed upon arrival to cope with the continuous arrival of events in the stream and to respond in near real-time. In this dissertation, we present a Situation Refi nement Model (SRM) that considers these requirements. In particular, by developing a Single-Scan Frequent Item Mining algorithm to acquire the minimal number of CEP rules with the ability to adjust the level of re refinement to t the applied scenario. In addition, a cost-gain evaluation measure to determine the best tradeoff to identify a particular SOI is presented. / Graduate

The Role of Inspiration in Scientific Scholarship and Discovery: Views of Theistic Scientists

This qualitative research study examined the ways those who identify themselves as theistic scientists and scholars experience inspiration, as defined as divine guidance or influence, in their scientific scholarship and discovery. It also explored participants' beliefs about how scientists and scholars can seek and prepare to receive inspiration in their work. Open-ended surveys of 450 participants from the behavioral and natural sciences and from a variety of religious backgrounds were analyzed for content themes in the areas of experiences with inspiration, preparing to receive inspiration, and further thoughts on inspiration in science. The themes extracted indicated that these scientists and scholars have experienced inspiration throughout all stages of the research process. They also believe that certain practices and virtues, such as openness to inspiration and nurturing a relationship with God, can help scientists and scholars be more prepared to receive inspiration in their work.

Udržování prolinkování dokumentů v ryhle rostoucích kolekcích je problematické. To je dále zvětšeno vícejazyčností těchto kolekcí. Navrhujeme použít Explicitní Sémantickou Analýzu k identifikaci relevantních dokumentů a linků napříč jazyky, bez použití strojového překladu. Navrhli jsme a implementovali několik přistupů v prototypu linkovacího systému. Evaluace byla provedena na Čínské, České, Anglické a Španělské Wikipedii. Diskutujeme evaluační metodologii pro linkovací systémy, a hodnotíme souhlasnost mezi odkazy v různých jazykoých verzích Wikipedie. Hodnotíme vlastnosti Explicitní Sémantické Analýzy důležité pro její praktické použití.

Based on the hypothesis, there was compiled and evaluated a questionnaire. That was the main basis for the evaluation of hypotheses. The result is a summary of findings about mental hygiene of the construction engineering managers.

Les récepteurs couplés aux protéines G (RCPGs), constituent la plus grande famille de protéines membranaires dans le génome humain. Les RCPGs sont des protéines de signalisation, qui exercent leur action à la surface des cellules, en réponse à une grande variété de stimuli extérieurs. Ils jouent un rôle primordial dans de nombreuses fonctions physiologiques et sont donc impliqués dans une multitude de pathologies comme les maladies cardiovasculaires, métaboliques, neurodégénératives, psychiatriques et oncologiques. L'attribution du prix Nobel de chimie 2012 aux professeurs Robert Lefkowitz et Brian Kobilka pour leurs travaux et avancées spectaculaires dans le champ de recherches des RCPGs, souligne encore leur importance. Les RCPGs constituent également la plus importante cible thérapeutique, avec 30% des médicaments actuellement disponibles sur le marché qui exercent leur action via un RCPG. Cependant, la découverte de nouveaux ligands reste un chalenge. Le but est de développer des approches basées sur la RMN à l’état liquide, qui auront un impact positif sur la recherche de ligand de RCPGs, grâce à l’étude et la caractérisation de récepteur pleine taille, solubilisés en micelles de détergents ou enchâssés en bicouches lipidiques natives / G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the largest class of membrane proteins in the human genome. GPCRs act as cell surface signalling proteins and respond to a variety of external signals. They play a pivotal role in many physiological functions and are therefore associated with a multitude of diseases, including cardiovascular, metabolic, neurodegenerative, psychiatric, and oncologic diseases. The 2012 noble Prize in Chemistry was awarded jointly to Robert J. Lefkowitz and Brian K. Kobilka for studies of GPCRs, highlighting the importance of this protein superfamily. GPCRs constitute also the most important family of drug targets in the human body, with 30% of current drugs acting on GPCRs. However, drug discovery targeting GPCRs remains difficult, owing to the restricted structural information on GPCRs related to the instability of these proteins when isolated from their cell membrane environments. There is also a lack of knowledge for the structural and functional consequences of the interactions of small-molecule compounds with GPCR. The aim is to develop methods to study and characterize a full GPCR solubilized in detergents or in native lipid bilayers, both in its free form and in small molecule bound forms, using liquid-state NMR experiments.
