Tässä Pro gradu -työssä tarkastellaan kulttuurista omimista suomalaisessa nykykirjallisuudessa ja julkisessa keskustelussa 2010-luvulla. 2000-luvulla kulttuurisen omimisen eettisyys on noussut maailmalla yleiseksi keskustelunaiheeksi niin tieteellisessä kuin julkisessakin keskustelussa, ja etenkin 2010-luvulla tämä keskustelu on lisääntynyt myös Suomessa. Kulttuurisella omimisella tarkoitetaan Toisen kulttuurin elementtien ottamista ja jäljittelemistä omaa etua tavoitellen esimerkiksi taiteessa. Tässä tutkimuksessa käytetään kirjallisuudessa tapahtuvasta kulttuurisesta omimisesta termiä aiheen omiminen, jolla tarkoitetaan Toisen kulttuurin jäsenten kuvaamista tai esittämistä. Tutkimuksen päätavoitteena on pohtia, miten aiheen omiminen kaunokirjallisuudessa voisi olla eettistä. Tämän ymmärtämiseksi kysytään, millaisia eettisiä haasteita ja valta-asetelmia kulttuurisesta Toisesta kirjottamisessa voi piillä. Tutkimuksessa analysoidaan, millaista keskustelua kirjallisuudessa tapahtuvan kulttuurisen omimisen ja aiheen omimisen ympärillä on Suomessa käyty ja miten suomalaissyntyiset kirjailijat ovat representoineet kulttuurista Toista kaunokirjallisuudessa. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu sekä 2010-luvun Suomessa käydystä mediakeskustelusta kirjallisuudessa tapahtuvasta kulttuurisesta omimisesta että kolmesta romaanista, joita ovat Anja Snellmanin Parvekejumalat (2010), Jari Tervon Layla (2011) ja Seita Vuorelan Lumi (2016). Aineistoa lähestytään kulttuurintutkimuksellisesti orientoituneen kirjallisuudentutkimuksen ja yhteiskunnallisesti kontekstualisoivan lähiluvun keinoin. Teoriatausta koostuu muun muassa James O. Youngin, Conrad G. Brukin ja Susan Haleyn teoretisoinneista kulttuurisesta omimisesta sekä Stuart Hallin ja Edward Saidin teoretisoinneista toiseudesta. Tutkimuksen tärkeimpiä tuloksia on, että Suomessa kulttuurisen omimisen ja aiheen omimisen ympärillä käyty keskustelu on keskittynyt lähinnä syyttelyyn ja puolusteluun, eikä aitoa keskusteluyhteyttä tai edes yhteisymmärrystä keskustelun aiheesta ole aina löytynyt — edelleen keskustelua käydään muun muassa siitä, onko kulttuurista omimista ilmiönä ylipäätään olemassa tai onko sen problematisointi mielekästä. Aihetta omiessaan suomalaissyntyiset kirjailijat liittävät Toiseen sekä toiseuttavia että samaistavia kuvauksia, mutta teoksissa toiseuttavat kuvaukset korostuvat. Lisäksi vääristyneet representaatiot ovat yleisiä. Aihetta omivissa teoksissa näiden tulosten eettisyyttä voidaan problematisoida, sillä toiseuttaessaan romaanit tulevat korostaneeksi eroja ”meidän” ja ”muiden” välillä sekä usein kuvanneeksi Toisen kulttuurin vastakkainasettelun kautta. Johtopäätöksenä tutkimukselle voidaan todeta, että jatkossa aiheen omimisen ympärillä käydyn keskustelun tulisi pyrkiä kehittymään — syyttelyä ja puolustelua tärkeämpää olisi keskittyä keskustelemaan siitä, miten Toisesta voisi kirjoittaa eettisemmin. Eettisyys kaunokirjallisuudessa Toista kuvatessa edellyttää sekä kirjoittajalta että lukijalta Toisen kunnioitusta ja kulttuurista sensitiivisyyttä.

abstract: ABSTRACT As referenced in Navajo ceremonial prayers and songs, "Saad bee hahoozhood jini," it began harmoniously with language. This dissertation examines and celebrates in new ways the meaning of language in Navajo literature. The first chapter is an introduction of this dissertation. I share my personal experiences with language, both English and Navajo, and how it has shaped me to be the person I am today as a Navajo speaker, student, educator, and professional. The second chapter contains an analysis and review of Western ideology of feminism and its place in Navajo society and a comparative study of several works written by Navajo authors, including Laura Tohe, Luci Tapahonso, and Nia Francisco, and how their creative works reflect the foundation of Navajo culture, Asdzaa Nadleehe, Changing Woman. The third chapter presents my own short fiction of Navajo characters living in today's society, a society that entails both positive and negative issues of Navajo life. These stories present realistic twenty-first century environments on the Navajo reservation. The fourth chapter consists of a short fiction written originally in the Navajo language. The story also represents the celebration of Navajo language as it thrives in today's time of tribal and cultural struggles. The sense of it being told in Navajo celebrates and preserves Navajo culture and language. The final chapter is the beginning of an oral narrative presented in written form, that of my grandmother's life story. abstract: Victorian London was often confronted with the filth and waste that was the result of urban civilization. The Victorians saw themselves as a race of humanity above the savage tribes. While steps were taken to repress these natural and instinctual products of humanity, human waste and filth were powerfully incorporated in the fictional writings of Charles Dickens and George Gissing. I argue that this incorporation of filth and waste in both OUR MUTUAL FRIEND and THE NETHER WORLD serves as a metaphorical statement on the living conditions of the Victorian lower class. Using the urban travelogues of Dickens and Gissing's contemporaries, along with the analysis on waste and filth done by Sigmund Freud and Julia Kristeva, I argue that the interpretation of waste by Dickens and Gissing define a permeable boundary between London's residuum and the rest of urban society. Oftentimes, the definition of waste and filth become entangled with the definition of value and money. While Dickens chooses to focus on an optimistic outcome of the use value of waste; Gissing sees no hopeful future for the inhabitants of London's slums. I argue that Dickens, throughout his novel, showcases a modernistic use value for the waste of civilization through the recyclable qualities of waste. Gissing, in opposition to Dickens' optimism, sees a more fatalistic future for civilization. Both novels are able to provide a blueprint for the future of urban society, by establishing that filth and waste is a unifying element of civilization, and by establishing the important role that filth can play within the value system of Victorian London. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. English 2012

abstract: While tournaments, duels, and challenges were analyzed within literary texts prior to the 1980's, the most recent trend in scholarship has been to focus on how these proceedings fit into a historical context. Many authors have noted how medieval rulers used tournaments, duels, and challenges as a way to keep their militaristic knights under control; however, there has been relatively little study on the way that these three events function as a means of social control in medieval romances. This paper examines how the public nature of these events and the chivalric nature of their participants combine to subvert the agency of not only the nobles, but also King Arthur himself in four of the Sir Gawain romances, "Ywain and Gawain", "The Knightly Tale of Gologras and Gawain", "The Awntyrs off Arthur at the Terne Wathelyne" and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. English 2012
