: les cas de Nantes et de Bordeaux / Festive urban events : towards an "exploratory site management"? for public places : the case studies of Nantes and Bordeaux

Miranda-Arias, Mónica-Sofia 22 November 2010 (has links)
Compared to "traditional" urban actions and current methods of public space management, Festive urban events in public spaces follow different dynamics ; they are ephemeral, cyclic, and immaterial. This research examines the management implications of Festive urban events and attempts to determine if these events' dynamics can unlock new perspectives for public space management. To answer our research enquiries, a Management of site (GS) theoretical framework is used. This theoretical framework describes and addresses the common management methods of four urban sites : multimodal rail stations, downtown areas, shopping malls, and private residences with services. These four site types are complexes, incorporating the coexistence of multiple urban functions and services, varied practices and interacting sector-based interests. These site types are permanent and offer a unique ambiance to their users. It appeared early on that a Management of site framework also allows describing the management methods of another kind of urban site, ephemeral nature, which seems as complex as those previously analyzed by this theoretical framework: the ephemeral sites in which Festive urban events are held. The Management of site framework was therefore examined with two different Festive urban events taking place in an ephemeral site : Bordeaux-fête-le-vin in the city of Bordeaux and the Rendez-vous de l'Erdre in the city of Nantes. This choice was made largely because these Festive urban events are held in ephemeral sites comprised of a number of different yet interacting components that require complex management : riverbank public places. The analysis of management methods of both these Festive urban events through the prism of the Management of site framework provides substantial insight into special event management. This insight enhances our understanding of complex public space manag ement and enriches the Management of site framework by introducing new analysis criteria

Bioarchaeology of violence and site abandonment at Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico

Casserino, Christopher Michael, 1967- 06 1900 (has links)
xvii, 133 p. : ill., maps. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / The objective of this dissertation is to address violence at the archaeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquimé) in northwest Chihuahua, Mexico. The reasons for the abandonment of Paquimé are uncertain. The prevailing theory claims this geographic area endured centuries of warfare, ritual sacrifice, and at least one massacre; this theory is supported by numerous unburied bodies recovered at the site. These assertions of violence have never been corroborated by osteological data. Data were collected from a sample of Medio period (A.D. 1200-1450) human skeletal remains recovered from the 1958-1961 excavations at Casas Grandes. These data were synthesized with accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dates, fluoride ion dates, population demographics, and burial context. Frequencies of ante-, peri-, and postmortem trauma were compared to other studies from the Old and New Worlds. I argue that warfare was not endemic to this region and that a massacre did not occur. Moreover, cannibalism and probably human sacrifice were practiced. I assert that these activities may have been related to the proliferation of the Mesoamerican ballgame in the American Southwest and to Paquimé's role as the distribution center of the region's ritual and exotic goods. This dissertation underscores the importance of including skeletal analysis with other lines of archaeological inquiry when answering questions about human behavior. / Committee in charge: John Lukacs, Chairperson, Anthropology; Guy Tasa, Member, Anthropology; Frances White, Member, Anthropology; John Orbell, Outside Member, Political Science

The phytosiology of the natural vegetation occuring in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site Gauteng, South Africa

Eloff, Gareth 08 1900 (has links)
The natural vegetation of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (COH WHS) was classified using Braun-blanquet methodology. This identified 22 distinct plant communities and 2 variants. Sampling took place over two growing seasons with a total of 91 releves being compiled. A stratified random approach to sampling used Land Types as a means of primary area stratification, with terrain position providing the means for further refinement. The grassland comprised of 12 plant communities and 2 variants and the woodland comprised of 10 plant communities. The classification of the woodland areas included some bush clumps associated with the entrances of caves which were also described independently in which seven distinct plant communities were identified A positive linear correlation exists between the size of the cave entrances and the extent to which the surrounding woody vegetation extends. This suggests the likelihood of cave entrance size influencing the surrounding vegetation. / Environmental Sciences / M. Tech. (Nature Conservation)

Aléa et microzonage sismiques à Beyrouth / Seismic hazard in Beirut

Brax, Marleine 11 October 2013 (has links)
Lebanon is one of the countries that have not suffered from large destructive earthquakes foralmost two centuries. It is however lying on the 1000 km long, left lateral Levant fault thatseparates the Arabic plate in the east from the African plate in the west. Its main branches inLebanon are the Yammouneh fault that crosses the country from south to north, the Serghayaand Rachaya faults in its Eastern part, the Roum and Mount Lebanon Thrust faults in itsWestern part. These faults have generated destructive earthquakes in the long known historyof the area. The largest events are: The July 551 earthquake on the Mount Lebanon Thrustfault, the May 1202 earthquake on the Yammouneh fault, the October 1759 on the Rachayafault and the November 1759 on the Serghaya fault. From all above, one can conclude thatLebanon is exposed to a significant seismic hazard. Assessing the local seismic hazard andrisk is therefore of primary importance for the whole country. The objective of the work undergone in this PhD is to take advantage of the latest advancesachieved worldwide to promote rather inexpensive, though reliable, seismic hazardassessment tools, to try to apply them in Lebanon starting with the big cities and specificallythe capital Beirut. These studies will help to understand the Lebanese seismic risk andsubsequently to start to elaborate seismic policies and codes that may help reducing this risk.A temporary seismological network consisting of 10 stations has been installed in Beirut anda part of its suburbs. Several tens of local and regional earthquakes could be recorded, andallowed to estimate the site response at selected sites in Beirut through the standard site toreference spectral ratio method ("SSR") on earthquakes, compared to the horizontal tovertical ratio ("H/V") calculated on earthquakes and on ambient noise. The same recordingscould also be used via the empirical Green Function’s technique ("EGF") to predict theseismic ground motion corresponding to a Mw7.5 on the Yammouneh fault. However, due tolimitations in near-field applications of the EGF technique, this prediction exercise wasperformed in two steps and with two complementary techniques: a weak event recording wasfirst used to simulate a Mw6.5 earthquake on the Yammouneh fault, while several, carefullyselected ground motion prediction equations (GMPE) were used to perform a comparativeprediction for the same earthquake. This EGF/GMPE comparison then allowed tuning theGMPE prediction of ground motion at various sites within Beirut for the target Mw7.5 event. The results were then extended in view of proposing a framework for a future microzonationviimap. A comprehensive campaign of ambient noise measurements was achieved for 615 sitesof Beirut municipality and close suburbs, the H/V processing of which allowed to derive arobust map of resonance frequency for the whole area. In addition, active and passive seismicmeasurements were conducted on different geological units near the 10 formerlyinstrumented sites, which provided quantitative estimates of the shallow S-wave velocitythrough the Rayleigh wave dispersion curves. These geophysical measurements permitted toprovide direct estimates of the shear waves velocity, which prove much more reliable thanthe highly scattered estimates derived from the compilation of the availablegeological/geotechnical parameters and the use of existing correlations equations betweenSPT N-value and S-wave velocity Vs.

[en] The sources of contaminated sites are related to several factors such as the lack of knowledge of safe procedures for handling hazardous and / or toxic substances, disrespect to these safe procedures and the occurrence of accidents or leaks during industrial processes, transportation or storage of unprocessed materials and products. In addition, contamination is usually associated with the exploration of natural resources and with the expansion of the industry and/or agrarian activities, which have happened, and are still happening, at the cost of high environmental and social risks. A contaminated site is considered a risk, since its existence can generate several problems such as damages to health, impairment of the quality of water resources, restrictions on land use and damage to public and private property, and damage to the environment. These situations, in general, involve complex risks with regard to the effects of exposure to contaminants on human health (CETESB, 2013), and may have short -, medium - or long-term effects.

Datamigration av Content Management Systems (CMS) för Multi-siteapplikationer : En studie på SQL-till-NoSQL migration / Data migration of Content Management Systems (CMS) for Multi-site applications : A study on SQL-to-NoSQL migration

Brown, Elin January 2018 (has links)

Cílená mutageneze ve studiu lidských cytochromů P450 rodiny 1 a jejich interakčních partnerů / Site-directed mutagenesis of human cytochromes P450 family 1 and their interacting partners

Milichovský, Jan January 2016 (has links)
Cytochromes P450 represent a large group of proteins metabolizing variety of substrates. Many of them are responsible for metabolism of xenobiotics including drugs and chemical carcinogens. Heme-protein cytochrome b5 is a single-electron donor cooperating with a NADPH:cytochrome P450 reductase and NADH:cytochrome b5 reductase 3 enzyme. Cytochrome b5 can affect the xenobiotic metabolism via modulation of the cytochromes P450 activity. One of the goals of the Ph.D. thesis was to utilize site directed mutagenesis of cytochromes P450 family 1 to elucidate the mechanism of their nitroreductase activity. Another aim was to study the interaction between cytochrome b5 and cytochromes P450 of the 1A subfamily using site directed mutagenesis on presumed protein-protein contact interface. Another goal was to utilize the combination of theoretical and experimental approaches to explain variance in the reduction state of several human cytochromes P450 heterologously expressed in intact bacterial cells. The results found in the thesis show that nitroreductase activity of CYP1A1, CYP1A2 and CYP1B1 is mediated by the presence of a particular hydroxyl group in their active centre. Single mutation introducing a hydroxyl group to the specific part of CYP1B1 active site to the active site turned on its artificial...

However, the security assurance of these resources has become an elementary task. The structure of dynamic websites composed by a set of objects such as HTML tags, script functions, hyperlinks and advanced features in web browsers may provide numerous resources and interactive services, for instance e-commerce, Internet banking, social networking, blogs, forums, among others. On the other hand, these features helped to increase the potential security risks and attacks, which are the results of malicious codes injection. In this context, Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) is highlighted at the top of the lists of the greatest threats to web applications in recent years. This work presents a method based on supervised machine learning techniques to detect XSS in web pages. A set of features extracted from URL contents and web document are employed in order to discriminate XSS patterns and to successfully classify both malicious and non-malicious pages / As aplicações web atualmente representam um importante ambiente de acesso aos serviços oferecidos na Internet. Zooarqueologia dos sítios arqueológicos Maracaju 1, MS e Santa Elina, MT / Zooarchaeology of the archaeological sites Maracaju 1, MS e Santa Elina, MT

Mirian Liza Alves Forancelli Pacheco 05 February 2009 (has links)
Archaeofaunistic remains rescued in archaeological sites from Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul have shown the existence of generalists past hunter-gatherers groups in these states. Embedded in this context, there are the archaeological sites Maracaju 1, MS and Santa Elina, MT, characterized by being rock shelters, with rock art, and a quantity of archaeofaunistic remains, along with other traces of material culture. Facing the above, this work aimed to (1) understand, from the perspective of archaeofauna, the subsistence patterns of the people who occupied Maracaju 1, and Santa Elina, two shelters in the Cerrado biome, (2) outlining the activities (specific or not) done by human groups who occupied these shelters, and face it, (3) deduce the function of these shelters for local people. To reach that, these zooarchaeological records were studied using multidisciplinary methods and techniques (e.g. Taxonomy and Experimental taphonomy). Facing these results, it was possible to infer that hunting and subsistence activities, in occupations attributed to hunters-gatherers in Maracaju 1, occurred in successive and probably seasonal context. This occupation characteristic has strengthened the hypothesis of the high degree of mobility and more horizontalised occupations in the landscape, characteristic of these human groups. Similarly, the most parsimonious explanation for the zooarchaeological context of Santa Elina, is that the human occupation, probably had a seasonal character and occurred during the resources allocation related to other cultural events, evidenced by the rock art and the archaeological remains rescued in this site.
