Geographically Distributed Employees' Perceptions of Employee Assistance Program Access

Many investigators have documented high levels of stress in the U.S. workplace and the underutilization of employee assistance programs (EAP). Researchers in other studies have concluded that an employee's perception of a service influences participation and service use. However, the perceptions of geographically distributed employees, who represent a growing population, have not been sufficiently examined. The purpose of this study was to investigate geographically distributed employees' perceptions regarding access to EAP stress management services to address the problem of EAP underutilization. Organizational justice theory served as the theoretical framework. The study design was generic qualitative. A purposeful sample of 15 geographically distributed employees provided rich data through semi structured interviews and online questionnaires. The use of generic inductive coding yielded emergent themes regarding geographically distributed employees. Results indicated that geographically distributed employee's perceived access to EAP stress management services as unclear, time-consuming, and inconvenient due to physical separation. This research is significant for human service, employee assistance, and human resource professionals who want to improve geographically distributed employees' perceptions of access to EAP stress management programs. More effective marketing may increase employee use of EAP services and alleviate workplace stress, thus positively impacting social change by helping to cultivate a healthy workforce.

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF RADIUS AND DIAMETER AUTHENTICATION SYSTEMS IN 802.1X BASED SECURED NETWORKS

There is increasing attention to the security challenges of IT-OT networks. Mitigating these challenges needs sophisticated methods to secure such networks, especially by securing access to the network. One valuable strategy that provides security to the network access level is Port-Based Authentication. Any authentication method within the IEEE 802.1x that can be adapted to current network complexity to minimize the attack surface related to the network access level is an area of interest. RADIUS has been a well-known leading protocol for a few decades while Diameter is newly developed from RADIUS as an unknown protocol; there is a lack of resources on the practical level. This thesis analyzes and evaluates RADIUS & Diameter protocols regarding authentication timeand their functionalities. The hardware used for the implementation phase consists of two Raspberry Pi as a server and supplicant, one IEEE 8021.x supporting switch (Ubiquity EdgeSwitch 24 Lite) and two Virtual Machinesalong with the software freeRADIUS & freeDiameter. Analyzing the fact for each protocol by literature study and the implementation result of this thesis, Diameter protocol requires more time to process the authentication than RADIUS. However, there were issues on the implementation that have affected the measurement of authentication time for Diameter. Based on the results, Diameter provides reliability, scalability, and more security than RADIUS. RADIUS shows a stable authentication time as promised. The RADIUS protocol is easy to implement and provides stable authentication, while Diameter still needs more software and documentation improvements.

Making the Case for Degree Credit EAP Courses

Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The issue of whether or not English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses should carry undergraduate degree credit has been long-debated. The current work attempts to demonstrate that these courses should contribute toward degree requirements in the same way that other foreign language courses do, on the basis of curricular consistency in liberal arts, language, and academic mission, as well as in keeping with goals toward multiculturalism and internationalization. Utilizing a review of existing EAP or English as a Second Language (ESL) course credit structures at 41 U.S. universities, and a survey of ESL/EAP program administrators, recommendations are made for proposing degree credit for EAP courses. Finally, a proposal is included for changing the EAP course credit structure at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.

Willingness to Communicate and International Students' Use of L2

Willingness to Communicate (WTC) in the second language (L2) is the "readiness to enter into discourse" which is considered to be the direct precursor of students' communication in L2 (MacIntyre et al., 1998). Oral language is thought to precede written language which creates an assumption that ongoing refining of oral skills may impact writing fluency. In respect to WTC model, there have been several versions that describe the construct (MacIntyre et al., 1998; Wen & Clement, 2003; Matsuoka, 2006). This study references self-efficacy, a cognitive variable in Matsuoka's (2006) proposed model, when analyzing writing as a phenomenon in relation to WTC. Two sequential writing samples collected from 12 international students are closely examined for key themes, which are informed by the responses to the WTC and Language History questionnaire. The results show a moderate correlation (rs=.646) between self-efficacy and willingness to communicate among the surveyed participants as well as a moderate correlation between the error frequencies and WTC scores (rs=.536).
