Elliptical Cylindrical Quantum Cloak

Chen, Shin-Liang 19 July 2012 (has links)
An elliptical coordinate transformation was chosen to produce an elliptical cylindrical quantum cloak. Since an ellipse can become to a circle geometrically, research on elliptical quantum cloak provides another way to test the feasibility of the quantum cloak. In this study, it was shown that the effective mass of an elliptical cylindrical quantum cloak is simpler than an circular cylindrical one. Hence, an elliptical quantum cloak is easier to achieve experimentally.

The relevance of the effective school correlates, to alternative education settings, for student in a correctional system, as identified by the teachers and adminstrators in selected charter schools, in Harris County, Texas

Cortez-Rucker, Vance 15 May 2009 (has links)
The State of Texas accepted the Effective School Research model and its correlates as a way of determining whether the state’s schools are effective. This included all juvenile justice alternative educational facilities. The purpose of the study was to assess the relevance of the Effective School Correlates to alternative educational settings for students in a correctional system as identified by the teachers and administrators in selected charter schools in Harris County, Texas. Secondly, the study was to suggest modification to the Effective School Correlates to make them relevant to an alternative educational setting for students in the correctional system in selected charter schools in Harris County, Texas. The literature revealed a potential lack of fit between the Effective School Correlates as the “Key Characteristic of Effective Schools” and their relevance to the context of alternative schools for students in the correctional systems. This study led to the postulation that the Effective School Correlates as written may need altering to meet the needs of the specialized correctional school setting. However, it is not clear what shape or direction this alteration would take. Findings of this study indicated that problems existed with the application of the Correlates as they related to the selected Charter Schools in Harris County, Texas. The population size limited the study and caution should be taken not to over-generalize the data.

Cultural Socialization Process of Effective Educators of Students of Color in an Elementary School District

Henry, Patricia May 15 May 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this life history study was to identify the experiences that influence the cultural socialization process of teachers and the factors that contribute to the effective instruction of students of color. Six female teachers who are currently assigned to third, fourth, or fifth grade students in elementary schools participated in this research project. Their experiences range from the second year in the classroom to thirteen years of teaching, and they have all had assignments as language arts teachers. Data for this qualitative research was collected from two face-to-face interviews, principals’ written descriptions about classroom environments, and participant observations. The interviews were transcribed from audio cassettes and the data was analyzed using Burke’s Pentadic Analysis, Linde’s Creation of Coherence and features from Spradley’s Participant Observation. Each teacher claimed unique lived experiences, but there were similar threads of high teacher expectation, meeting the needs of students and affirming the cultural differences of the students of colors that were sewn together in all their narratives. The cultural socialization process of the participants was connected to pivotal events that were linked to creation of coherence in their lives. These epiphanies were identified in their earliest recollection and continued into their instructional practices. The findings of this study indicate that there are deep layers that can emerge when teachers reflect on the events that influence their effectiveness with students of color. The conclusions are that effective teachers of students of color are guided by an agenda that includes the multiple roles that they have to assume in order to achieve the goal of success for all their students. Recommendations for further research and implications for theory and practice were also discussed.

Cost-effective Microarchitecture Optimization for ARM7TDMI Microprocessor

Hung, Yu-Liang 24 August 2000 (has links)
In this paper, we present how to optimize our ARM7TDMI instruction set compatible microprocessor. The ARM7TDMI is a 32-bit microprocessor developed by ARM Ldt. It used in embedded application such as mobile phones, pager and PDAs. The ARM7 family owes its success to the combination of low power, low cost and high performance. However, as applications become more complex and integrate more and more functionality, the processor is required to provide more and more performance. We tune the hardware simply, no use complex hardware, to complete performance optimization. We use synthesis tool to synthesize our RTL design and analyze timing to fund the critical path of our microprocessor. We will describe how to optimize the critical path to increase performance.

industry strategy study of passive component

Liu, Chiang 20 July 2001 (has links)
Recently computer and communication industries have grown markedly and rapidly. The related industry of the passive components also grows fastly. especially inductor, resistor and capacitor aspects. However, there are so many companies engaging in this passive component business, and hence competition is extremely severe for domestic and foreign markets. Facing current situation the competitors of passive component business must have an effective strategy, or they will be eliminated from the market. In this thesis, the orientations of industry are divided into Product Leaders, Operational Excellence, Customer Intimacy, and Diversification. Based a literature survey of domestic and foreign information, the case study and the industry structural analyses and defining four strategic competition groups, we hope we can grasp the firm¡¦s key success factors (KSFs) to find the best strategy of competitive advantage.

Analysis of Waveguide Bending Loss and Quantum-dot Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers

Weng, Tzung-Cheng 17 July 2008 (has links)
In this thesis, it mainly studies the performance characteristics of the bending losses in semiconductor waveguides and the quantum dots semiconductor optical amplifier. We used InP-subtract and InGaAlAs /InAlAs multiple quantum wells epitaxial wafer grown by MBE as our material(£fg=1.41£gm). We had successfully fabricated a series of bending strip-loaded waveguides. On the quantum dots semiconductor optical amplifier, symmetric InGaAlAs/GaAs quantum well structure is used to fabricate the optical waveguide. We have established an automatic optical measurement system to measure the device characteristics more accurately. Design respect of bending waveguide, we design a series of radius, is 60£gm, 80£gm, 110£gm, 170£gm,and 260£gm respectively, and utilize Fabry-Perot resonant, measurement and estimate the loss of bending waveguide in quantity. We find the bending waveguide loss as radius for 260£gm and contain deeply etching process was quite equal to straight waveguide loss. On the quantum dots semiconductor optical amplifier, we design a single mode waveguide and a broad area waveguide to compare the difference of their electron-hole combination situation. A single mode waveguide with longer cavity length had better combination situation than shorter (C311 of cavity length 4000£gm ,0.00066£gW *A/cm2). And the broad area waveguide had more better combination situation to single mode waveguide (C311 of cavity width 150£gm, length 4000£gm , 0.0966£gW *A/cm2). For the gain to the pump signal, C311 singe mode waveguide (emission peak:1211nm,pump signal:1260nm) could get a gain about 3.56dB¡Fand C374 singe mode waveguide (emission peak:1255nm,pump signal:1260nm) could get a gain about 6.1dB.

Important competencies for the selection of effective school leaders : principals' perceptions

Cavazos, Arturo Jude 25 July 2012 (has links)
This study focused on competencies considered important in the selection of principals from the perspectives of effective principals on the Texas–Mexico border. The competencies of effective K-12 principals included in the study were initially advanced by Marzano et al. (2005). Specifically, an attempt was made to determine which competencies are considered important, how these were assessed during the selection of effective principals, and whether differences in importance existed by school level (elementary, middle, and high school). Using purposeful sampling, the principals were selected from a list of high-performing schools from data provided by the Center of Research, Evaluation and Advancement of Teacher Education. A total of 100 principals participated in the study. Data were collected using an electronic survey and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Additionally, emerging data were analyzed using the narratives provided by the respondents in reference to other competencies and other ways the competencies were assessed during the selection process. Findings indicated that whereas all the identified competencies were endorsed to be considered in the selection of an effective school leader, 2 were the most important: communication and visibility. Next highest in importance were focus; involvement in curriculum, instruction, and assessment; and culture. Additional findings indicated 8 emerging competencies, with the premier being data-driven decision making. Findings also indicated that most of the competencies were assessed by means of two types of interviews: interview with the committee or interview with the superintendent or designee. On the other hand, some of the respondents reported the competencies were not assessed, but a few were assessed using other methods, such as checking references, a Gallup survey, and experience in the district. Some were simply appointed to the position. Findings also indicated that the endorsement of the identified competencies differed by school level to some extent. Communication was endorsed as most important by elementary and middle school principals, whereas the high school principals endorsed visibility as the most important competency to consider when hiring a principal. Finally, implications for the selection of effective principals are offered. Moreover, suggestions for further inquiry that might illuminate other aspects of the hiring process are presented. / text
