Interaccions moleculars: correcció de l'error de superposició de base i propietat de les funcions flotants

A primary interest of this thesis is to obtain a powerful tool for determining structural properties, electrical and reactivity of molecules. A second interest is the study of fundamental error based on complex overlay of bridge hydrogen. One way to correct this error, using Counterpoise correction proposed by Boys and Bernardi. Usually the Counterpoise correction is applied promptly on the geometries previously optimized. Our goal was to find areas of potential which had all the points fixed with CP. These surfaces have a minimum corresponding to a surface other than corrected, ie, the geometric parameters will be different. The curvature of this minimum will also be different, therefore the vibrational frequency will also change when they are corrected with BSSE. Once constructed these surfaces have been studied various complex. It has also been investigated as the method for calculating the error influenced on the basis superposition. / Un primer interés de la tesi és poder obtenir una eina potent de determinació de propietats estrucutrals, elèctriques i de reactivitat de les molècules. Un segon interés fonamental és l’estudi de l’error de superposició de base en complexes de pont d’hidrogen. Una forma de corregir aquest error, és mitjançant la correcció de Counterpoise proposada per Boys i Bernardi. Normalment la correcció de Counterpoise s’aplica puntualment sobre les geometries prèviament optimitzades. El nostre objectiu era trobar superfícies de potencial les quals tinguessin tots els punts corregits amb CP. Aquestes superfícies tenen un mínim diferent del corresponent a una superfície corregida, és a dir, els paràmetres geomètric seran diferents. La curvatura d’aquest mínim també serà diferent, per tant les freqüencies de vibració també canviarà quan aquestes es corregeixen amb BSSE. Un cop construïdes aquestes superfícies, s’han estudiat diferents complexes. També s’ha investigat com el mètode de càlcul influïa sobre l’error de superposició de base.

En aquesta tesi he estudiat l'efecte de l'error de superposició de base (BSSE) en la planaritat d'algunes molècules. He observat que l'ús d'alguns mètodes de càlcul amb determinades funcions de base descriuen mínims d'energia no planars per les bases nitrogenades de l'ADN. He demostrat que aquests problemes es poden arreglar utilitzant el mètode Counterpoise per corregir el BSSE en els càlculs. En aquesta tesi també he estudiat la fotofísica de la timina i els resultats mostren que existeixen dos camins de relaxació des de l'estat excitat que permeten la regeneració de l'estructura inicial de forma ultraràpida. / The effect of the basis set superposition error (BSSE) on the planarity of some molecules has been studied in this thesis. I have observed that the use of some correlated methods with certain basis sets lead to non-planar minima structures of nucleobases. I have shown that the use of the Counterpoise method fixes these pitfalls in all cases. I have also studied the photophysics of thymine in this thesis and my results show that there exist two decay paths that can regenerate the initial structure of thymine in less than tenths of picoseconds upon photon absorption.

Performance of Single Layer H.264 SVC Video Over Error Prone Networks

abstract: With tremendous increase in the popularity of networked multimedia applications, video data is expected to account for a large portion of the traffic on the Internet and more importantly next-generation wireless systems. To be able to satisfy a broad range of customers requirements, two major problems need to be solved. The first problem is the need for a scalable representation of the input video. The recently developed scalable extension of the state-of-the art H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video coding standard, also known as H.264/SVC (Scalable Video Coding) provides a solution to this problem. The second problem is that wireless transmission medium typically introduce errors in the bit stream due to noise, congestion and fading on the channel. Protection against these channel impairments can be realized by the use of forward error correcting (FEC) codes. In this research study, the performance of scalable video coding in the presence of bit errors is studied. The encoded video is channel coded using Reed Solomon codes to provide acceptable performance in the presence of channel impairments. In the scalable bit stream, some parts of the bit stream are more important than other parts. Parity bytes are assigned to the video packets based on their importance in unequal error protection scheme. In equal error protection scheme, parity bytes are assigned based on the length of the message. A quantitative comparison of the two schemes, along with the case where no channel coding is employed is performed. H.264 SVC single layer video streams for long video sequences of different genres is considered in this study which serves as a means of effective video characterization. JSVM reference software, in its current version, does not support decoding of erroneous bit streams. A framework to obtain H.264 SVC compatible bit stream is modeled in this study. It is concluded that assigning of parity bytes based on the distribution of data for different types of frames provides optimum performance. Application of error protection to the bit stream enhances the quality of the decoded video with minimal overhead added to the bit stream. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Electrical Engineering 2011

Classroom Error Climate: Teacher Professional Development to Improve Student Motivation

Student motivation and achievement are often low for students from low socioeconomic status households and may decline when children from all walks of life enter middle school. Despite years of studies describing these declines and efforts to improve learning outcomes, the trends continue. Motivation has been studied from several theoretical standpoints, among them, self-efficacy, beliefs, goal orientations, and emotions. This dissertation introduces error orientation: how teachers and students react to and use errors in the classroom. A positive error orientation, one that views errors as opportunities to learn rather than punishments, may help improve students* emotions, self-efficacy, and future goal orientations, while aligning their beliefs in a more adaptive direction, thus reducing maladaptive academic motivation. A professional development design is proposed here to train teachers in using errors to the advantage of the learner by creating a positive error climate in their classrooms.

Global Positioning System (GPS) machine guidance aids in the precise navigation and piloting of farm machinery and serves to boost productivity and optimize farm operations. Characterization of low-cost GPS guidance systems for livestock production operations is necessary for return on investment (ROI) decision making. The objective of this research is to characterize the accuracy of four commercially available low-cost ($985 - $4,200) wide area augmentation system (WAAS) corrected GPS guidance systems. Testing procedures were designed in accordance with the ASABE/ISO standard 12188-2 for testing of satellite-based guidance systems during straight line travel. The vehicles lateral deviation of a planned path, characterized as cross-track error (XTE), was evaluated for short-term and long-term guidance for each system at speeds of 4.8, 9.6, and 14.5 kph (3, 6, and 9 mph).

A simulation comparison of two methods for controlling the experiment-wise Type I error rate of correlated tests for contrasts in one-way completely randomized designs

Nelson / A Bonferroni and an ordered P-value solution to the problem of controlling the experiment-wise Type I error rate are studied and compared in terms of actual size and power when carrying out correlated tests. Although both of these solutions can be used in a wide variety of settings, here they are only investigated in the context of multiple testing that specified pairwise comparisons of means, selected before data are collected, are all equal to zero in a completely randomized, balanced, one factor design where the data are independent random samples from normal distributions all having the same variance. Simulations indicate that both methods are very similar and effective in controlling experiment wise type error at a nominal rate of 0.05. Because the ordered P-value method has, almost uniformly, slightly greater power, it is my recommendation for use in the setting of this report.

Lotsbåtsolyckor : En studie om olyckor som involverar svenska lotsbåtar

Denna studie genomfördes i syfte att kartlägga och analysera mönster mellan olyckor sominvolverar svenska lotsbåtar. Studien utfördes som en kvantitativ litteraturstudie medkompletterande textanalys. Samtliga rapporter från lotsbåtsolyckor från de senaste 14 årenbegärdes ut från Transportstyrelsen. Dessa kategoriserades efter de vanligaste olyckstypernaoch analyserades därefter. Resultatet visade att flest olyckor sker i samband med transportenfrån kaj till fartyget som ska lotsas och vice versa, medan haverier och grundstötning är devanligaste incidenterna. Personskador sker näst intill uteslutande vid bordningsmomentet menär förhållandevis få. Det kunde fastslås att ”Human Error” är den vanligaste angivna orsaken iolycksrapporterna till att olyckor sker. Ett förslag till ökad säkerhet är fortsatt utbildning av”Maritime Resource Management” för en större medvetenhet om risken för olyckor,framförallt i samband med dåligt väder. Vidare finns tekniska problem med sprucknabränsleledningar och heta avgasrör, vilket möjligtvis kan lösas med dubbelmantladebränsleledningar. / This study was conducted in order to identify and analyze patterns between accidents involvingSwedish pilot boats. The study was conducted as a quantitative literature review withadditional textual analysis. All reports regarding pilot boat accidents from the last 14 yearswere requested from the Swedish Transport Agency. These were categorized by the mostcommon types of accident and subsequently analyzed. The results showed that most accidentsoccur during transportation from quay to the ship requesting pilotage and vice versa, whilebreak downs and groundings are the most common incidents. Personal injuries occur almostexclusively during boarding but are relatively few in number. It was concluded that "HumanError" is the most common reason given in the accident reports. A proposal for increasedsafety is continued training of "Maritime Resource Management" for a greater awareness ofthe risk of accidents, especially during bad weather. Furthermore, there are technical problemswith cracked fuel lines and hot exhaust pipes, which can possibly be solved with double-walledfuel lines.

A Bit Error Rate Analysis of Offset QPSK over the Aeronautical Telemetry Multipath Channel

The multipath fading channel is modeled using the aeronautical telemetry channel model [1-2]. Expressions for the probability of bit error are derived that are a function of the multipath model parameters. The expressions are shown to agree with computer simulations and show that a strong multipath reflection with a short delay causes much more degradation than a weak multipath reflection with a long delay.
