High resolution scattering measurements for stationary particles

Particle characterization is important to the aerospace field because particle ingestion in propulsion engines can lead to catastrophic failures. It has been shown laser based methodologies can determine size and concentration of spherical particles by using light extinction. However, when one moves to increasingly complex shapes one must take into consideration not only light extinction but multi angle light scattering. Cylindrical particles scatter light in a way that can be quantified by electromagnetic wave theory. This scattering distribution is directly related to the cylinders diameter and material properties, as well as the wavelength of the incident light. This project designed and implemented a rig that measures the scattering distribution of single static cylindrical particles. It was shown that the scattering distribution for cylinders can be measured and compared to computational expected values, especially in the forward scattering region. Future work in measuring the scattering distribution of increasingly complex geometries and in flow conditions is proposed. / Master of Engineering

A Laboratory Human Operant Examination of Extinction Bursts

The present study examined operant extinction in a controlled setting using a human operant paradigm. Participants watched a preferred video. During the video, either the video or audio portion of the video was selectively removed, on average every 15 s. Participants could restore the video by pressing a force transducer. In one group, relatively low forces were required (250 g) and in the other relatively high forces were required (750 g). At the 20th and 30th minute during the session, the video or audio was removed but the participants could not restore the component for 30 s. The results showed that responding during the probe increased relative to 30-s periods prior and following the probe, characteristic of an extinction burst. The results also showed that overall we saw increases in force under high force conditions during extinction when presses no longer produced sound or video, and force changed little during the low force conditions. We conclude that extinction bursts are a robust phenomenon that can be demonstrated in humans. Additionally, the topographies, i.e. force, established during baseline and the modality of the consequence appear to be two variables determining the short-term course of extinction.

Fear Memories and Extinction Memories: Neurophysiological Indicators and the Role of Estradiol and Extinction Timing

Fear memories are necessary to initiate anticipatory fear responses when we are confronted with cues that predict an impending threat. However, when a cue no longer predicts threat, an extinction memory is formed that actively inhibits the expression of the fear memory. Failure to acquire, consolidate, or recall extinction memories causes fear memory expression (i.e., fear responding) in the absence of threat, which is a hallmark characteristic of most anxiety-related disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Of further importance, these disorders occur approximately twice as often in women than men, which is thought to partially rely on sex hormone mediated differences in fear extinction. Moreover, deficits in extinction memory processing can also hinder the success of extinction-based exposure therapy, which is commonly used to treat these disorders. Thus, a better understanding of the factors determining the quality of extinction memories is of utmost importance. The present thesis focuses on three of these factors including the female sex hormone 17β-estradiol (E2), fear extinction timing, and the noradrenergic arousal system. To examine the role of E2 (Manuscript 1; low E2 levels or high E2 levels) and fear extinction timing (Manuscript 2; either immediately or delayed after the initial fear memory formation), we used a special differential fear conditioning procedure that allowed us to separately assess fear memories and extinction memories via peripheral arousal responses (measured via skin conductance responses [SCR]) and, most importantly, via central neurophysiological indicators (measured via electroencephalography [EEG]). Concerning EEG parameters, we were especially interested in neural oscillations (especially in the theta and gamma range). To further advance the understanding of the neurophysiological foundations of both memory systems, we also aimed at disentangling oscillatory and non-oscillatory brain activity (Manuscript 2). Moreover, the crucial role of the noradrenergic arousal system for the quality of extinction memories is highlighted in a review of relevant rodent and human studies (Manuscript 3). By using the described multi-methodological approach, we were able to demonstrate for the first time that peripheral arousal as well as fear-related theta oscillations are sensitive to E2. This was indicated by less fear responding (attenuated peripheral arousal and attenuated theta oscillations) during the recall of fear and extinction memories under high peripheral E2 levels (Manuscript 1). Concerning the role of fear extinction timing, we demonstrate that delayed extinction is advantageous over immediate extinction in reducing peripheral arousal during the recall of the extinction memory (Manuscript 2). Additionally, by disentangling oscillatory and non-oscillatory brain activity, we demonstrate for the first time that oscillatory and non-oscillatory brain activity is sensitive to fear expression. Moreover, by reviewing different rodent and human studies, we highlight the important role of noradrenergic arousal for the recall of extinction memories and, importantly, provide a detailed mechanistic framework of how extinction deficits might be caused after immediate extinction (Manuscript 3). In sum, the present thesis underscores the important role of E2, fear extinction timing, and the noradrenergic system for the recall quality of fear memories and extinction memories in humans.

Attachment point characteristics and modeling of shear layer stabilized flames in an annular, swirling flowfield

The focus of this work was to develop a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of flame stabilization and extinction for shear layer stabilized, premixed flames. Planar experimental studies were performed in the attachment point region of an inner shear layer stabilized flame in an annular, swirl combustor. Through high resolution, simultaneous PIV & CH-PLIF measurements, the instantaneous flow field and flame position was captured enabling the characterization of 2D flame stretch and velocity conditions in the attachment point region. In addition, measurements performed at various equivalence ratios and premixer velocities provided insight into the physics governing blowoff. Most notably, these studies showed that as lean blowoff conditions are approached by decreasing equivalence ratio, the mean stretch rates near the attachment point decrease but remain positive throughout the measurement domain. In fact, compared to numerically calculated extinction stretch rates, the flame becomes less critically stretched as equivalence ratio is decreased. Also, investigation of the flame structure at the leading edge of the flame showed strong evidence that the flame is edge flame stabilized. This was supported by inspection of the CH-PLIF images, which showed the CH-layer oriented tangent to the flow field and terminating abruptly at the leading edge. Lastly, the flame anchoring location was observed to be highly robust as the mean flame edge flow conditions and mean location of leading edge of the flame were insensitive to changes in equivalence ratio, remaining nearly constant for values ranging from 0.9 to 1.1. However, at the leanest equivalence ratio of 0.8, the flame leading edge was located farther downstream and subject to much higher flow velocities. These results thus suggest that blowoff is the result of a kinematic balance and not directly from stretch induced flame extinction.

Feasibility and design of blast mitigation systems for naval applications using water mist fire suppression systems

CIVINS / The recent trend of using fine water mist systems to replace the legacy HALON-1301 fire suppression systems warrants further study into other applications of the water mist systems. Preliminary research and investigation indicates that fine mists (20-25 micro droplet size) may reduce peak overpressures of a shock wave traveling through a space. Such pressure reductions could be used to mitigate the destructive effects of a shock wave (initiated by an explosive device) traveling through a structure. Currently these blast mitigation effects have only been demonstrated in small-scale shock tube tests and computer simulations. Uncertainty exists as to the scalability of such a system. The intention of this research is to investigate the applicability of such a blast mitigation system for shipboard use. Study into the degree of mitigation necessary to make a system practical for shipboard installation was conducted. In addition, a theoretical study of the mechanisms of blast mitigation using water mists was completed. / CIVINS

We study the integral Galactic extinction and reddening based on the galaxy catalog of the South Galactic Cap u-band Sky Survey (SCUSS), where u-band galaxy number counts and u - r color distribution are used to derive the Galactic extinction and reddening respectively. We compare these independent statistical measurements with the reddening map of Schlegel et al. (SFD) and find that both the extinction and reddening from the number counts and color distribution are in good agreement with the SFD results at low extinction regions (E(B - V)(SFD) < 0.12 mag). However, for high extinction regions (E(B - V)(SFD) > 0.12 mag), the SFD map overestimates the Galactic reddening systematically, which can be approximated by a linear relation Delta E(B - V)= 0.43[ E(B - V)(SFD) - 0.12]. By combining the results from galaxy number counts and color distribution, we find that the shape of the Galactic extinction curve is in good agreement with the standard R-V = 3.1 extinction law of O'Donnell.

POLARIZATION MEASUREMENTS OF HOT DUST STARS AND THE LOCAL INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM

Debris discs are typically revealed through the presence of excess emission at infrared wavelengths. Most discs exhibit excess at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths, analogous to the solar system's Asteroid and Edgeworth-Kuiper belts. Recently, stars with strong (similar to 1%) excess at near-infrared wavelengths were identified through interferometric measurements. Using the HIgh Precision Polarimetric Instrument, we examined a sub-sample of these hot dust stars (and appropriate controls) at parts-per-million sensitivity in SDSS g' (green) and r' (red) filters for evidence of scattered light. No detection of strongly polarized emission from the hot dust stars is seen. We, therefore, rule out scattered light from a normal debris disk as the origin of this emission. A wavelength-dependent contribution from multiple dust components for hot dust stars is inferred from the dispersion (the difference in polarization angle in red and green) of southern stars. Contributions of 17 ppm (green) and 30 ppm (red) are calculated, with strict 3-sigma upper limits of 76 and 68 ppm, respectively. This suggests weak hot dust excesses consistent with thermal emission, although we cannot rule out contrived scenarios, e.g., dust in a spherical shell or face-on discs. We also report on the nature of the local interstellar medium (ISM), obtained as a byproduct of the control measurements. Highlights include the first measurements of the polarimetric color of the local ISM and the discovery of a southern sky region with a polarization per distance thrice the previous maximum. The data suggest that lambda(max), the wavelength of maximum polarization, is bluer than typical.

Mineralogical - Geochemical Investigation of two sections across the Permian-Triassic Boundary in the Continental Realm of the Southern Karoo Basin, South Africa

Student Number : 9902718G - MSc dissertation - School of Geosciences - Faculty of Science / The Late Permian (251.0 ± 0.4 Ma) mass extinction is universally acknowledged as the most consequential of the five major Phanerozoic mass extinctions. More than 90% of marine species, ~70% of terrestrial vertebrates, and ~90% of plant life were lost in a very short interval. The nature of the Permian-Triassic (P-Tr) boundary and the cause of the mass extinction associated with it have been the subject of extensive international debate. Possible causes for the P-Tr extinction include asteroid/comet impact, oceanic anoxia, volcanism, methane clathrate dissociation, or combinations of these causes. Geochemical studies of the P-Tr boundary have traditionally been focused on the marine realm, as the boundary in continental sections is typically difficult to pinpoint. One continental setting of the P-Tr boundary that has, however, received much attention is that in the main Karoo Basin, South Africa. The Karoo Basin is a large retro-arc foreland basin which accumulated sediment from the Carboniferous (300 Ma) through to the Early Jurassic (180 Ma) in southwestern Gondwana. Mineralogical and geochemical investigations across two palaeontologically well-constrained continental P-Tr boundary sections at Commando Drift Dam and Wapadsberg in the southern Karoo Basin of South Africa have been undertaken in order to aid in our understanding of this extinction event. The Commando Drift Dam section is also constrained palaeomagnetically. There is a change in paleosol colour across the P-Tr boundary from green-grey to red-brown, which is believed to reflect a change of oxidizing conditions at the P-Tr boundary. Quartz grains were examined for possibly impact-produced microdeformation features, but these were not found. Iridium concentrations are below the detection limit (by instrumental neutron activation analysis) and the sections could not be evaluated as to whether any significant enrichment has taken place at the P-Tr boundary. Major element chemical profiles are dominated by the signatures of carbonate nodular horizons in both sequences. Iron contents (and accompanying siderophile element abundances) increase across the palaeontologically-defined P-Tr boundary, followed by a decrease thereafter. The major element concentrations, together with the effects of weathering, largely control trace element distribution. Carbon isotopic results from the Commando Drift Dam section show a gradual decrease in values before the P-Tr boundary, with a larger negative excursion at the P-Tr boundary. Above the boundary, gradual recovery to initial ratios is observed, followed by another gradual decrease in values to the palaeomagnetically defined boundary. No evidence supporting an extraterrestrial impact extinction mechanism has been found. Rather, the carbon isotope data from this study support two gradual palaeoclimatic changes separated by a sudden change in the carbon isotopic content of the atmosphere. The size and nature of these excursions support the addition of large amounts of anoxic material into the atmosphere. This is proposed to have been caused by the multiple influx of carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases at various times and by different mechanisms. Such a release of carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases could have been caused by the coincident volcanic event (the formation of the Siberian Traps) and the episodic release of methane clathrates.

Effects of sex and competition on evolutionary survival of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii populations in deteriorating environments

Ongoing global change has made understanding the factors that affect adaptation and survival of populations in the context of changing environments a central problem in evolutionary biology. Special focus has been given to the probability of survival through genetic adaptation to lethal environments; a process termed evolutionary rescue. Many studies of this process, both theoretical and empirical, have been carried out over the last two decades. As a result, we now understand how a number of factors may affect the probability of population survival. However, two factors that are known to affect evolutionary responses, mode of reproduction and interspecific interaction, have received limited attention. The main aim of my work was to investigate whether and how mode of reproduction and negative interspecies interactions (competition) affect the probability of evolutionary rescue. To achieve this goal, I set up a series of selection experiments, by propagating populations of unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in various stressful conditions, and monitored their survival and fitness. To investigate the effect of sex in these experiments, I manipulated mode of reproduction, by constructing the experimental populations allowed to reproduce either only sexually or asexually or both. To investigate the effect of competition, I manipulated the presence of the competitor(s) in the experimental populations, by cultivating them either in presence or absence of the competitor. I first tested the effect of rate of environmental deterioration and mode of reproduction on extinction dynamics and evolutionary rescue of the experimental populations. I found positive correlation between the rate of extinctions and the rate of environmental deterioration. The experiment revealed an interaction between mode of reproduction and the rate of deterioration, manifested through significantly reduced extinction rate of sexual populations relative to asexual populations in environment deteriorating at intermediate rate. I then investigated the effect of sex and competition on the probability of evolutionary rescue, by propagating the experimental populations in environment deteriorating in a simple way (the change comprising a single abiotic factor) and complex way (the change of both abiotic and biotic factors). I found the negative effect of competition on the probability of evolutionary rescue, and beneficial effect of sex in both types of environmental deterioration, reflected in higher number of rescued populations relative to asexual group. I then tested whether phylogenetic relatedness between a competitor and the focal species and the extent of their ecological similarity affect the likelihood of evolutionary rescue, by subjecting the experimental populations to the presence of 10 different competitors, isolated from two different types of habitats, and each being positioned on a different branch of the phylogenetic tree of Chlamydomonas genus. The probability of evolutionary rescue was contingent on the identity of a competitor species, but the results showed no significant effects of phylogenetic relatedness and ecological similarity. Finally, I investigated which experimental factors could potentially select for the long-term maintenance of sex, by subjecting the experimental populations to different types of selective environments (directional and fluctuating change of abiotic factors, the presence of the competitor) and monitoring the frequency of sex over the course of time. No selective environment significantly increased the rate of sex in the experimental populations. In contrast, I found reduction in frequency of sex in the populations subjected to fluctuating environmental change. My results demonstrate that both mode of reproduction and competition affect the probability of evolutionary rescue, which is generally positively affected by sex and negatively affected by competition. However, these general effects may be altered by other factors, namely mode of environmental change and the identity of the competitor species.
