(Communications) / The purpose of this study was to place public relations officer in perspective internal and external social responsibility. the role of the with regard to make this possible, an in-depth qualitative study was undertaken, which was primarily based on a literature study. The concept of social responsibility was defined by situating the essence and extent of social responsibility within the theory of public relations. The' discussion of social responsibility was done within the perspective of the social system, and a system theoretical 'orientation -to social responsibility and public relations was explored. A clear distinction was drawn between internal and external social responsibility. The situation of social responsibility within the public relations domain was investigated by means of a critical analysis. This showed that the role of the public relations officer will have to change to accommodate new demands, and that a new corporative communications image of social responsibility has become necessary. The identification of specific problems in South Africa was discussed, and the development of a socially responsible policy based on these problems, received attention. Attention was given to the to facilitate the public social responsibility role of corporate communication relations officer in executing In conclusion, a qualitative research was conducted to analyse the attitude of a group of industrialists on the East Rand with regard to social responsibility. This was followed by a discussion of the results and conclusions of the study, and recommendations based on the findings of the research.

Crime in South Africa is very close to getting out of control. There is a dramatic increase especially in violent crimes such as murder, hijacking, business robberies, house robberies, rapes and armed robberies where innocent people get killed daily. This has the public shivering in fear. The South African Police Service are responsible for the prevention and investigation of all crimes committed. The Detective Service has the unpleasant task of hunting down the criminals that are responsible for committing these crimes. When a crime is committed and a suspect is arrested, the detectives must use all techniques and methods available to them to connect the suspect with the crime. The positive linkage of a suspect with a crime can lead to a conviction in court and one less criminal on the streets of South Africa. One technique that can be used is pointing out of a crime scene. M.Ed. / Many mothers enter the labour force because of the need for workers and the financial position of the family which is worsening in these highly inflationary times. Although this might solve some financial problems in the family, it creates other problems, for instance child care. The question now arises as to how the adolescent daughter will form her own identity if her mother follows a career. It is clear that the working mother has no easy task. Besides her career, she also has her children, her husband and a household to take care of. Furthermore, she has the task of helping her adolescent daughter with the formation of her own identity. Two variables have been identified: * the relationship between mother and daughter * the identity formation of the adolescent daughter. An English and Afrikaans questionnaire was compiled based on these variables. The questionnaire was answered by 1086 girls and boys (Afrikaans, English and other language groups) between the ages of 12 and 18. Mothers were grouped into three categories, namely full time, part time and non - working mothers. The most important findings of this study are the following: * Working mothers develop a relatively better relationship with their adolescent children in comparison with non - working mothers. * The relationship between mother and daughter develops relatively better than that of mother and son. * Younger adolescent daughters develop a relatively better relationship with their mothers than older adolescent daughters. * Afrikaans speaking adolescent daughters develop a relatively better relationship with their mothers than adolescent daughters of other language groups. Guidance to working mothers of other language groups seems to be necessary. * The formation of the identity of adolescent children of working mothers develops relatively better than those of non working mothers. The averages of all the girls are quite high, which indicate that the mother - child relationship and the identity formation of the adolescent daughter develops well, irrespective of the mother's career.

The primary aim of this dissertation is to map the geology of the East Rand Basin accurately by creating a 3D model. This was done by using borehole data from the National Groundwater Archive Geodatabase, which the Department of Water and Sanitation collected, and the average depths derived from the literature. Triangulated irregular networks (TINs) and digital elevation models (DEMs) surfaces were created from these data points to determine the depths for areas with no borehole data. Using these surfaces, three methods were used to create three main models. These models were then compared to one another, other geological maps and cross-sections to determine the most accurate and practical model of the three. It was found that the quality and quantity of the data from the National Groundwater Archive Geodatabase were not sufficient for these models; therefore, the results and accuracy of each layer was questionable. This dissertation found that these methods can be used for basic geological studies if the data are of the same quality and quantity. However, if the data are more evenly distributed and higher in quantity, these methods can be used to create more accurate models. Furthermore, the use of commercial software was recommended in this study. The reason for recommending these tools is that they have been specifically designed to create geological layers from boreholes within the ArcGIS software. Supporting orphaned learners through the school based support team : a case study

M. Ed. (Educational and Learning Support) / Society has never before experienced a human tragedy of the magnitude caused by the orphan crisis. Life for the estimated 4 million orphans in sub-Saharan Africa is often desperate where children attempt to care for themselves and each other without adequate adult· support. Orphaned children are not only traumatized by the loss of their parents, they then also lack adult guidance during crucial developmental stages of their lives, and educational concerns are usually neglected. The social costs that emerge are juvenile crime, reduced educational levels, unskilled workers and a general burden on the state. With the introduction of the School Based Support Teams (SBST) in an attempt to further the implementation of inclusive education, schools have become aware of the need to support all learners in their community, including orphans. This study investigated the nature of the role played by the SBST of a primary school in their endeavours to support orphaned learners. During their work with the orphans, the SBST encountered many challenges that emerged as diverse needs of the children were revealed.Initially, the focus was on meeting lower order needs such as food, clothing, shelter and school equipment. In meeting these needsthe SBST embraced a position of collaboration with local businesses and child welfare organisations in providing the necessary resources. Help was also given in the planting of a vegetable garden, with an irrigation system which was tilled by volunteers from the parent community. School uniforms were provided by the Department of Social Development and the Rotary club. With time however, the SBST, started taking an additional responsibility, such as obtaining identity documents, applying for child grants and arranging for social worker involvement in the management of foster parents and custody. Caregivers and foster parents were approached and aided in their applications for exemption from paying school fees and close collaboration with custody courts was maintained. Working more deeply with the orphans, higher order needs emerged regarding grieVing for lost parents, the need to re-establish social groups and family ties, and the need for spiritual guidance and a sense of hope for the future. Responding to this additional challenge the SBST established a link with the local church to provide counselling support for the orphans. The schools guidance department conducted a workshop for the teachers on basic counselling and bereavement counselling which serve to empower the staff to deal with the orphans' emotional trauma on a daily basis. Since the orphaned learners were now being physically and emotionally supported, learning problems emerged due to their previous interruptions in schooling. The SBST called on the expertise of remedially trained teachers to provide extra classes and supervise homework for these learners in an attempt to address their scholastic backlog. Selected orphans were loaned solar powered reading lamps for use at home where there is no electricity. Orphaned learners were also encouraged to participate in the school's sporting and extra-mural programme and the necessary sport gear and arrangements were facilitated by the SBST. As the nature of the SBST's involvement deepened, a sub-committee was established, the welfare portfolio, whose sole responsibility was the well-being of the school's orphans. In managing the growing orphan population in the school, they compiled a database of the orphans in the school detailing their specific problems, needs, home circumstances and the actions required by the school in supporting each child's individual needs. A workshop was conducted for the foster parents and caregivers on budgeting and using the child care grants wisely for the orphans. Since it was revealed that some caregivers were abusing the funds on alcohol and neglecting the orphans in their care. The welfare committee also negotiated half price transport fees with the local taxi service in the transportation of orphaned learners to and from school. Apartnership was established with the local police station to gain their support. Should any orphaned learners report physical abuse, they would be respectfully treated. The systemic and collaborative nature of the role of the SBST in this primary school is highlighted in this case study. Without the visionary focus and strategic planning of the SBST in supporting the orphaned learners, they would probably have dropped out of school. Thus the transformation of the SBST into a broad-based structure which networks with a myriad of sources is crucial in fostering inclusive educational practices in South African schools.

M.Cur. / Women approach the experience of childbirth from their own frame of reference, expectations and the types of experiences which they encountered during their lifetime. Although much is done to prepare women for childbirth and motherhood, little information is obtained about the mother's experience of childbirth during the intra partum period, regardless of delivering naturally or with the administering of epidural anaesthesia. with this research it was endeavoured to gain more knowledge about the experiences of women during childbirth. The midwife can use this knowledge to have better insight in the needs of these women to ensure a better quality of patient care. A qualitative study was undertaken. The phenomenological method (the autobiographical method) was used, within the context of a private hospital on the West Rand. During March to April 1990 unstructured (non formative) interviews were conducted with 10 primigravidas that delivered vaginally. Five of the 10 women made use of epidural anaesthesia. A study of the literature was done to determine what the experts have already ascertained about this phenomenon. Themes were selected from the literature and the women's experiences were accordingly grouped. of this research, it appears that the who have delivered by means of epidural from those who delivered naturally. were identified where women had the same From the findings experiences of women anaesthesia, differ Universal experiences type of delivery. Recommendations were made on how the midwife can contribute to fulfil in the identified needs of the woman in labour.
