Germain Grisez's natural law and creation theology as a framework for reflection on climate change and the ecological crisis

My thesis is that a recovery of Germain Grisez’s theological ethics in relation to the environment and the application of his conservative Catholic methodology to climate change can yield a novel and significant contribution to Catholic theological reflection on this central challenge in an age of ecological crisis. This thesis argues that climate change and the wider ecological crisis are ‘signs of the times’—and hence are appropriate issues for Catholic theological reflection—both in principle and on the basis of their classification as such within the authoritative teaching of the Church’s magisterium. The scientific evidence for the phenomenon of anthropogenic global warming is robust and the UNFCCC establishes a collective legal obligation to deliver a greenhouse gas abatement strategy rigorous enough to prevent ‘dangerous anthropogenic interference with the earth’s climatic system’. This thesis questions both the assumption of endemic anthropocentricism in the Judeo-Christian tradition and the critical-revisionist methodology adopted by a number of ecotheologians in relation to Vatican teaching on the basis of this assumption. This thesis proposes an alternative approach to reflection on ecological issues employing a conservative Catholic theological method exemplified in the work of Germain Grisez. This thesis proposes a rereading of Grisez’s natural law through the lens of his creation theology that reveals an important and hitherto overlooked resource for environmental ethics. Although Grisez himself does not address the climate challenge in his published work, this thesis shows that his ecological insights are pertinent to the issue and application of his theological method can contribute constructively to the wider project of confronting the climate crisis from a Catholic perspective. This thesis further argues that Grisez’s reconstruction of natural law is viable, in that it represents one philosophically cogent solution to the naturalistic fallacy, and that neither his choice of this solution nor his divergence from Classical Thomism compromise the construction of a ‘Grisez School environmental ethics’. In addition, his natural law has the virtue of catholicity in its capacity to contribute to ecumenical and secular debates necessary to the resolution of the climate crisis.

Effects of Alcohol Expectancies, Drinking Behaviors, and Ecological Contexts on Negative Alcohol-Related Consequences among University Freshmen

The purpose of this study is to assess a hypothesized model of the influences of alcohol-related expectations, drinking behaviors, and ecological contexts, on first-year college students’ experience of negative, alcohol-related consequences. Growing concern about college student alcohol abuse and its critical consequences has elicited extensive research, prevention, and intervention efforts by academic institutions. Understanding the impacts and interactions of the cognitive, behavioral, and contextual influences associated with college student alcohol abuse is crucial to developing prevention and intervention efforts that effectively mitigate these issues. This investigation analyzed data gathered through the University of Oregon’s AlcoholEdu program to assess the influences and interactions of alcohol expectancies, specific drinking behaviors, and ecological contexts on the development of negative alcohol-related consequences among 3,240 first year university students. The model proposed in this study assessed the influences and interactions of students’ (a) positive and negative alcohol expectancies, (b) engagement in high-risk drinking, (c) use of protective behavioral strategies, and (d) exposure to ecological risk and protective contexts, on their experience of negative alcohol-related consequences. Implications for further research, intervention and prevention efforts are discussed.

Worth a thousand words: the impact of images on the perception of pollinator habitat

Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Blake Belanger / The pollinator crisis - a catastrophic decline in domestic and feral pollinator populations across the world - has grown in severity over the last decade, and recent rise in the publicity of pollinator decline has brought it to the forefront of conservation work. The decline in pollinator populations is due to many human and environmental factors – one of the most prominent being the decline in natural pollinator habitat as urban and agricultural areas expand. Designed urban pollinator habitat can fill the need for foraging and shelter, however gaining public support for these ecological spaces can be a difficult endeavor. Pollinator gardens and urban ecological habitats are typically viewed as messy or unattractive to users, and landscape architects and designers are often met with resistance when proposing such landscapes for public spaces. What visual elements can be used as communication tools by professionals in landscape architecture and ecological design to increase the understanding and appeal of pollinator spaces to the public? This knowledge could provide insight into the ways designers and landscape architects present their work to improve the chances of public approval, and thus implementation. A visual preference survey was implemented and became a vital strategy to find the relationship between key visual elements in images, and the visual appeal and the quality of habitat they communicate. Previous studies in the field of semiotics show that images contain visual elements of language that imply meaning through the use of signs and visual cues. Participants evaluated images showing naturalistic sites during the growing season, and showing subjects like flowers and pollinators, especially up-close images. The survey revealed various levels of understanding of ecological function in different demographics, and a proportional level of appeal. The relationships revealed from the survey were used to create a set of representation guidelines for landscape architects and designers to use when proposing urban pollinator habitat, and other urban ecological spaces. These tools will help to communicate the functionality and need of these spaces, while portraying their intrinsic beauty and potential for enjoyment. A conceptual design was produced from the literature to illustrate how the guidelines can be used in the context of an urban setting.

The Rise of H2Ottawa

In 2010, the University of Ottawa (hereafter, UO) banned the sale of single-use water bottles. UO decided that the sale of this product ran contrary to their commitments to environmental, social, and economic sustainability. This ban has been adopted by several institutions, locally and globally. However, there is still demand for portable water that operates within the boundaries of sustainability. I developed H2Ottawa at UO, through my internship with the Office of Campus Sustainability (hereafter, OCS). The goal of H2Ottawa is to bring portable water to the UO community without compromising the institution's allegiance to sustainability. To do this, we are selling multi-use, metal water bottles in vending machines and select cafés on campus, for the same price one would expect to pay for single-use bottles ($3.00) . I have used a Living Action Research approach, as defined by Mc Niff and Whitehead (2011) to document and analyze the planning, conceptualization, and implementation of this project. For the purpose of this research, I consider that the UO adopts the mentality outlined through Ecological Modernization Theory (hereafter, EM). In short, EM argues that sustainability can be achieved within a capitalist society. I will use a green-Marxist lens to position the critical analysis of this project. Here, it is argued that we cannot ‘buy our way out of trouble’, meaning that a revolution is necessary to achieve a sustainable society. I will argue that as an institution, the UO makes its goals towards sustainability compatible with a corporate understanding of environmental responsibility. This thesis aims to answer: how does the UO implement sustainability initiatives in a way that complies with the value-set of the university, while also satisfying community expectations? I have found that the UO implemented H2Ottawa to provide students with access to potable water, and to augment their reputation. Considering that this project is the first of its kind, its adoption reinforces UO’s commitments to sustainability and innovation. Research findings will be of use for future students, as I present challenges involved in the conceptualization and implementation of sustainability-motivated initiatives within the Canadian university context.

Abstract This thesis consists of practical and theoretical part. The former which is essential contains 4 final versions of posters related to ecology accompanied with series of drafts. Posters and drafts are made with help of computer graphic programs Adode Photoshop and Corel Draw and printed on paper of size A2 and A3 respectively. The latter is made up from 3 chapters and constitutes an explanatory text for above mentioned posters. The first chapter deals with ecological problems in general and elucidates the reason why this topic has been chosen as well as specifying the particular issues pictured on the posters. The second chapter explains the choice of poster as a communication medium and characterizes briefly its history. The last chapter tries to clarify reasons that led the author of this thesis to choices of the technique; subsequently it describes the process of the creation and the ideas pictured. In the conclusion the author emphasizes the importance of teaching of this topic at the basic schools.

A study into the anthropogenic impacts affecting the Elands River, Mpumalanga

Water is one of our key and indispensable natural resources. It plays a fundamental part in life (and the quality thereof), the environment, food production, hygiene, industry and power generation. Water is one of the major limiting factors in South Africa when it comes to economical growth and social development. In our country water is a scarce resource which is unevenly distributed both geographically and through time. As the demand for water increases, with increasing human populations and economic development, so to does the pollution of our river ecosystems.The Elands River is one of these natural resources that is under constant threat. It falls within the Incomati Water Management Area and is further sub divided into the Crocodile River sub area. This sub area is highly stressed, as it provides water for several human activities. The Elands River is a major tributary of the Crocodile River. The Crocodile River is a source of fresh water for several towns and is used by industry, rural and the agricultural communities (including tobacco farms). The Elands River in turn, is used for irrigation of vegetables. Both these rivers support a rich diversity of aquatic life. Along with its social and economical importance, the Elands River has immense ecological importance, as it holds great biodiversity including critically endangered biota. The main anthropogenic impacts on the Elands and Crocodile rivers include: · The Sappi Ngodwana Mill and the associated pulp and paper activities · The influence of the Ngodwana dam wall on the flow and water quality within the lower Ngodwana River · Nutrient loading taking place due to the treated sewage that is released into the river in the upper reaches and in the vicinity of the Mill · Sedimentation and flow regulation that is taking place in the Crocodile River, upstream of the confluence with the Elands River · And the agricultural activities within the Elands River system. The activities related to the Mill are the major concern in the study. The Sappi Ngodwana Mill is situated at the confluence of the Elands and Ngodwana rivers. The mill does not discharge effluent directly into the river. The effluent is however, irrigated onto the 514 hectares of farmlands adjacent to the Mill. The irrigated effluent has contaminated the groundwater in this area and the primary influence of this groundwater contamination is the deterioration of the surface water quality as well as, negatively impacts the quantity of water in the Elands River. The groundwater enters the Elands River through three springs near Ngodwana namely Fraser’s eye, Northern eye and Eye X. The groundwater from both Fraser’s eye and Eye X has been contaminated with calcium, potassium, magnesium, sulphates and most importantly chlorides. All these substances contribute to the increase in conductivity in the Elands River, which in turn may have a possible impact on the ecological integrity of the system. The pulp and paper industry is a large consumer of water and few regrettable incidents over the years have given the industry a reputation as a major water polluter. The industry’s management of water is,however, of world class and every attempted is made to manage the environment in a sustainable manner. This study aims to assess the impact of these anthropogenic activities on the associated aquatic ecosystems. Assessing the impact of anthropogenic activities on the aquatic environments, like the Elands River, has in the past been based mainly on the assessment of water quality. Earlier management of water resources has thus been based on the potability of water. Over the last decade management initiatives have expanded to include domestic, agricultural, recreational and most importantly instream (fish, invertebrates etc.) users. It has become common practise to use aquatic biota to assess the impacts of human activities of freshwater resources. The reason for this is that animals and plants can provide a long–term integrated reflection of water quality, quantity, habitat quality and other environmental conditions. Water and sediment quality was assessed by applying standard techniques and protocols. Additionally historical water quality data was obtained from the Sappi Ngodwana Mill and the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. Habitat quality was assessed by implementation of habitat quality indices. This included that Integrated Habitat Assessment Index and the Habitat Quality Index. The vegetation at each site was identified in the field with the assistance provided by the members of the Elands River Valley Conservancy and using various field guides and the riparian zone was then demarked. The integrity of the fish community was assessed by implementing the Fish Assemblage Integrity Index and the Fish Response Assessment Index. The integrity of the aquatic macro invertebrate communities was also assessed. This was achieved through use of the South African Scoring System and the Macro Invertebrate Response Assessment Index. An investigation into trait differentiation within and between two closely related Silene species.

Ecological differentiation and adaptation are processes that can drive divergence and speciation. Measuring ecologically revenant traits can help to identify possible targets of natural selection that may have mediated ecological differentiation. This study looked for evidence of within and between species differentiation in seven ecologically relevant traits in two closely related species sampled across their range, and whether any of these traits were related to climate differences among site of origin. We measured seven traits under common garden conditions in seedlings of Silene dioica (11 populations, n=528) and Silene latifolia (14 populations, n=672) grown in the botanical garden in Uppsala in a randomised block design. Three traits related to leaf morphology were measured, and four related to water usage of the plant were measured. These traits were analysed for differences between the species as well as for differences within each species between populations using a linear mixed model. The traits’ relationship to a climate variable, derived from the axes of a principal components analysis of climate data for each site, was investigated using a linear model. A number of drought avoidance (e.g. succulence, max turgid weight) and morphological traits (e.g. leaf ratio) differed between the two species. Water use efficiency has been flagged before as possibly driving ecological differentiation between the two species and the results identify possible candidate traits for quantifying this separation. Differentiation between populations within each species was also present in two traits within S. latifolia and in four traits within S. dioica significantly varying between the populations. This could reflect either local adaptation or genetic drift acting on populations across the range. One trait related to the amount of water taken up by the leaf (wgain) was found to be significantly associated with the climate variable, which was extracted from the principal components analysis, in S. latifolia. The results identified a number of candidate traits which could reflect ecological differences between the species especially with respect to water relations. These traits may allow the species to respond differently during periods of water stress, which in turn could result in ecological separation of the species and determine their geographical ranges.

Accountability in the context of civilization change in China

The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of accountability in the context of civilization change in China. Using a Foucaultian epistemic framework and archaeological method, data has been gathered from four sources: textual, interviews, case studies and surveys. Each source has been considered in terms of the viability of the modern episteme and the possibility of episteme change to ecological civilization taking place in China. Also the actors in the sustainability accountability network have been identified along with the key contingencies that could lead to changes in accountability in China. Based on the data collected there is strong evidence that the existing industrial civilization in China is seen to be unsustainable. Also that there are particular contingencies in place in China that make episteme change both likely and perhaps already taking place. The key contingency in this research is the metaphysical continuum based on harmony ideas in ancient Chinese philosophy. As a result there are strong grounds for predicting that new forms of accountability will be based around groupings of organizations in provinces, geographical areas (river basins) and regions, feeding up to accountability for sustainability at national and supra-national levels. Practically this research has opened up the possibility of accountability in China that could seriously address sustainability issues rather than the typical Western approaches based on empty rhetoric to improve reputation and legitimacy. This research has operationalized Foucault’s ideas on episteme change empirically in China. As such it represents an original contribution to research on sustainability and accountability responses thereto.
