Humanature : a mixed use healthcare centre in Yeoville, Johannesburg

M.Tech. (Architectural Technology) / A persons' well-being is characterized as health, happiness, prosperity and as being in a good state of existence. The way in which we maintain our body, by eating the correct foods to exercising on a daily basis, is an important part of maintaining our well-being. Medical authorities regard South Africa a shaving one of the healthiest environments and climates in the world. South Africans get to enjoy sport and outdoor activities, fresh fruit and vegetable sand some of the planets cleanest air (Health issues in South Africa 2011: [sp]). This however is not the case for many South Africans living in poor overcrowded conditions with the lack of basic facilities. Within the medical field are large areas of controversy, particularly with HIV/ AIDS treatments between Traditional medicine and Bio-medicine. The dissertation will not focus on the study of one specific ailment and space related to health care. Instead an attempt is made to create a space where a multitude of medical functions can operate and share space in a symbiotic relationship. This would ultimately create a place of well-being and healing, where public health can be re-invent for a broader audience through mixed use facilities, social interaction and nature. The investigation area of the dissertation takes place in Yeoville and the function of the building will examine the notion of a Mixed Use Healthcare Centre. The architecture will look at the human scale and needs whilst Nature will deal with form and function. The Design intervention attempts to dissect the existing healthcare system and inject new and fresh responses to the ailing problems in the industry. There are currently large gaps in the public and private sectors of South Africa as well as the dialog between Traditional medicine and Bio-medical practices (Richter 2003: [sp]). The concept of the intervention is to provide a closed loop Healthcare system where the project becomes self sustaining within the Social conditions, Function of space and the Well-being of people This will be done by investigating the existing typologies of healthcare systems in South Africa and by combining both Traditional Medicine and Bio-Medicine. This could allow a better communication network to establish between the two disciplines and provide more information about heath and well being to the public. A spatial model to determine the location and extent of sodic sites in the Shingwedzi and Ripape river catchments of the Kruger National Park using remote sensing classification techniques and satellite imagery

MSc., Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, 2011 / Sodic soils are salt-affected soils which are high in sodium in relation to magnesium and calcium. Commonly called sodic sites in the Kruger National Park (KNP), these patches exhibit unique functional characteristics due to the high levels of sodium which cause surface crusting, cracking and the dispersion of clay particles. The aim of this study is to use satellite imagery to map sodic sites in the KNP at different spatial and spectral scales, giving the best option for a repeatable, semi-automated classification. The resultant map of sodic sites for the KNP will be used as a management tool and for future research projects. A field test for sodicity was necessary to collect sufficient ground truth samples for robust accuracy assessment of the image classification. Sodic soils are identified by measuring EC, pH and SAR which are highly variable within site and between testing methods, and therefore not useful for rapid ground truth classification of sodic soils in the field. The sodium level at which clay particle dispersion takes place varies between soils, but is measurable in the field using the Emerson dispersion test. Laboratory tested sodic soil sites from previous research re-tested in this study showed positive results for dispersion of clay particles in water. The physical properties of sodic sites described in the literature and observed in the field were applied to classify sodic sites in the KNP in the field using a decision tree, together with results from the dispersion test and the observed presence of the grass species Sporobolus iocladus. Landsat 7 and SPOT 5 imagery cover the whole park, with ASTER, CAO hyperspectral, LiDAR and black and white orthophotos available for selected areas. The topography elements of crest and footslope were derived from the STRM 90m digital elevation model (DEM). Image preprocessing to top of atmosphere reflectance was performed where necessary and visual enhancement techniques and transformations were applied to derive the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) and other indices. Spectral signatures were checked against spectral signature libraries, and the class separation was tested using the cluster analysis of spectral signatures. MODIS NDVI averages placed the imagery in phenological context. Object-based image analysis using eCognition was applied to classify the sodic sites of the Shingwedzi and Ripape River catchments. The input imagery was segmented into ecologically meaningful patches and classification accuracy was assessed using the field samples collected using the decision tree to identify four classes: sodic sites (bare and woody), river sand, riverine vegetation and savanna areas. Comparison of the accuracy assessments for the Shingwedzi study site showed that the Landsat 7 and SPOT 5 classification algorithms gave an overall kappa index accuracy of 89% and 78% respectively, and a sodic site kappa index of 90% and 89%. Validation results using the ground truth samples gave an overall kappa index accuracy of 61% for Landsat 7 and 52% for SPOT 5, with a sodic site kappa index of 49% and 39% respectively. The classification algorithms were applied to the Ripape study site for Landsat 7 and SPOT 5 with repeatable results for the SPOT 5 imagery of 88% overall kappa index and 81-93% kappa index for sodic sites using similar seasonal imagery in the wet to early dry season. The Landsat 7 classification algorithm was applied to the entire KNP based on the repeatability results of 56% overall kappa index and 60% sodic site kappa index for the Ripape site. The quest for a repeatable algorithm to classify sodic sites from satellite imagery has been met by the SPOT 5 imagery using scenes acquired at similar seasonal stages. The late wet season or early dry season imagery was used to apply the classification algorithm with the best success. Changes in size or shape of sodic sites over time requires very high resolution imagery and further studies to understand where the edge of sodic sites are detected from imagery, and how the phenology of the vegetation growing on these sites affects detecting any change in size of the sodic site.

A legislative and biophysical assessment of the regulation of off-road vehicles on South African beaches.

The legislative management of Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs) on beaches has evolved over a period of time in response to a range of influences and changing circumstances within the various social, institutional, economic and biophysical systems. The impact of ORVs on beaches in South Africa is multifaceted and when viewed holistically incorporates the interaction between the biophysical, social, economic and institutional environments. This Study focuses only on the legislative and biophysical environments associated with the impact of ORVs on beaches. Sustainable coastal development draws attention to the "process" character of sustainable development that needs to be worked towards over time in an iterative manner. It highlights the need to take into account the current reality of prevailing circumstances, the uncertainty of the future, limited understanding of coastal ecosystems and communities, and the complex interactions between and within the human and non human components of the environment. An understanding of the ecological integrity and effective governance dimensions (being the focus of Study), although only two of the five dimensions of sustainable coastal development, contributes towards an understanding of the sustainability of the impact of ORVs on beaches within the South African context. The legislative environment is investigated from the management perspective of the national Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. This Study determines whether effective governance is being achieved through the ongoing management of the impact of ORVs on South African beaches. The institutional management at a national level has resulted in the conditional banning of ORVs from beaches, which has resulted in promoting the ecological integrity of beaches, therefore contributing towards sustainable coastal development. The physical system is investigated where appropriate in terms of the biophysical parameters within which ORVs are managed on beaches within the inter-tidal zone as per the ORV General Policy (1994). In order to understand the biophysical system within which ORVs are managed, the existing literature and research concerning the impact of ORVs on beaches is reviewed, including existing literature on beach geomorphology and beach biota. A Case Study Area was selected for an experimental investigation to determine the biophysical impact of ORVs on sandy beaches. The experiment was conducted at Leven Point, north of Cape Vidal situated on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast within the St Lucia Marine Reserve. The ORV General Policy (1994) has been superseded by the ORV Regulations (2001), which do not however, specify the biophysical delineation of the management of ORVs on beaches. This Study has included recommendations applicable to the management of ORVs on beaches in South Africa in terms of the ORV Regulations (2001). These recommendations advocate the conservation of the dynamic biophysical environment of the inter-tidal zone on beaches, and the need to take a sustainable coastal development approach to applications for Recreational Use Areas (RUAs) in terms of the ORV Regulations (dated 21 December 2001). / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2003.

Regrowth patterns, defences and allocation of stored energy reserves in Acacia seedlings following herbivory and fire.

Disturbances, such as herbivory and fire are commonplace in savanna ecosystems. The effects of herbivory and fire on growth and defences of adult trees is a much studied filed in plant ecology. However, there are comparatively few studies that have investigated the effects of herbivory and fire on seedling growth, defences and establishment. African Acacia trees are common and widespread, and are suggested to be keystone species in savanna ecosystems. They have been shown to significantly positively increase soil characteristics, such as soil moisture and infiltration, while also increasing spatial heterogeneity of savannas. These trees are distinguishable by their array of physical and chemical defences. Physical defences are either in the form of spines (physiologically costly to produce, thus considered inducible) or prickles (physiologically cheap to produce, thus considered constitutive), while condensed tannins are the most common form of chemical defences. Adult Acacia trees have been shown on several occasions to be highly resilient to disturbance events, primarily due to their large size. However, the effects of herbivory and fire on Acacia seedlings have been little studied despite their apparent importance for our understanding of African savanna ecosystem functioning. In two separate experiments, this thesis aimed to investigate the individual and combined effects of simulated herbivory and fire on the regrowth, defences, and total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC) of the seedlings of several Acacia species, while also testing the Resource Availability Hypothesis (RAH) (14 Acacia species) and the Expanded Growth-Differentiation Balance Hypothesis (GDBH) (three Acacia species). The RAH (Coley, Bryant & Chapin 1985) and the GDBH (Loomis 1932) both assume that arid-adapted (resource-poor) species are slow growing, with low tissue turnover rates. Contrastingly, humid-adapted (resource-rich) species have fast growth rates and thus a high tissue turnover rate. Therefore, arid-adapted species are predicted to invest more carbohydrate reserves in defence after a disturbance event, in order to defend new photosynthetic material. Conversely, humid-adapted (resource-rich) species are predicted to invest carbohydrate reserves into increased growth after a disturbance event, in order to compensate for tissue loss. The first greenhouse experiment found that, in accordance with the RAH, humid-adapted species displayed elevated growth rates compared to arid-adapted species. Overall, defences significantly increased after herbivory, but significantly decreased after fire. Herbivory was also shown to significantly reduce TNC stores in roots more than fire. We found that arid-adapted species did indeed invest more carbohydrate stores (TNC) into defence, and displaying an increase in spine and prickle abundance, spine and prickle length, and condensed tannin concentration. Humid-adapted species displayed an increase in growth rather than in defence, with the majority of species only increasing one defensive trait. Humid-adapted species also displayed significant trade-offs (negative correlations) between new stem growth and defence traits, while arid-adapted species overall did not display any significant trade-offs between stem growth and increased defences. The majority of arid-adapted species also displayed an allometric effect for spine abundance and length, with an increase in one trait led to an increase in the other. Prickles were found to be inducible, despite the assumption that due to low physiological cost, they are no inducible. Herbivory and fire were shown to not be substitutable in their effects on Acacia seedlings in a controlled experimental setting. The second greenhouse experiment tested the Expanded Growth-Differentiation Balance Hypothesis (GDBH) in the seedlings of A. erioloba, A. karroo, and A. nilotica using five levels of nutrient availability. Overall, spine abundance and spine length displayed a unimodal trend in all three species, with spine abundance and spine length being greatest at a nutrient availability of 800 mg/ ℓ. Spine abundance, spine length and condensed tannins increased significantly after herbivory, but were shown to significantly decrease after fire. We found that with an increase in nutrient availability, the growth of stems and roots, along with the production of TNC in roots and stems of all species significantly increased. Our data provide mixed support for the assumptions and predictions of the expanded GDBH. The regrowth of stems and physical defences were consistent with the GDBH. Chemical defences (i.e. condensed tannins) were however, inconsistent with the predictions of the GDBH. We have shown that Acacia seedlings are highly resilient to disturbance events, while the growth responses of Acacia seedlings are underpinned by TNC stores in roots. Simulated herbivory and fire are often substituted for one another in controlled experiments. The ecological effect of Acacia saligna in a sand plain fynbos ecosystem of the Western Cape, South Africa

Thesis (MScFor)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The invasive Australian acacia, A. sa ligna, is widespread in the Western Cape, South Africa, and is widely used by local communities. Not surprisingly, the introduction of the biological control agent, the fungus Uromycladium tepperianum in 1987 was received with mixed emotions. In an effort to determine the socio-economical and ecological impact of the fungus, the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry has commissioned a study, of which this thesis forms part. For this thesis, a number of parameters, environmental as well as biological, were sampled, analyzed and compared with existing data from previous studies. The goal was to obtain a comprehensive estimation of the effect of A. saligna on a Sand Plain Fynbos community near Atlantis and to assess whether or not, the detrimental effect A. saligna has on plant biodiversity, has reached the stage where it has become irreversible. The floristic data confirmed results from earlier studies, that invasion of A. saligna in Fynbos communities induces a decline in plant diversity, especially in dense acacia thickets. This study mainly revealed structural changes rather than community shifts. The enrichment of the soil as noted by others authors was also confirmed for the study area. However, it was outside the scope of this study to determine the long-term effects of this enrichment on the Sand Plain Fynbos communities. Soil moisture content was sampled on three different occasions, in densely invaded and uninvaded study plots. The aim was to see if A. saligna had any influence on the availability of water in the upper soil. Contrary to expectations, moisture content under acacia stands was higher in spring and early summer in the top soil than in pristine fynbos. Pitfall traps were used to sample the arthropods that dwell the surface of the study area. For arthropods in general, the survey did not produce conclusive data, but spider species seem to be positively affected by the presence of A. saligna, probably due to the structural diversity they add to the fynbos. This study revealed that the full ecological impact of A. saligna on its environment is far from understood, mainly due to the richness and complexity of the fynbos communities and a lack of research about faunal aspect of the Fynbos ecosystem. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Australiese akasia, A. saligna, is wydverspreid in die Wes-Kaap, Suid-Afrika, en word dikwels gebruik deur die plaaslike gemeenskap. Dit is dan nie verbasend dat die invoering van die biologiese bestrydingsmiddel, die swam Uromycladium Tepperianum in 1987, met teenstrydige emosies ontvang is nie. In 'n poging om die sosio-ekonomiese en ekologiese impak van die swam te bepaal, het die Department van Waterwese en Bosboukunde 'n ondersoek aangevra waarvan die tesis deel vorm. Vir die tesis word 'n aantal parameters, omgewings sowel as biologies, geproef, geanaliseer en vergelyk met bestaande data van vroeër navorsing. Dit is egter insiggewend dat die spinnekopspesies voordeel trek uit die aanwesigheid van A. saligna. Dit is waarskynlik omdat die akasia strukturele diversiteit aan die fynbos verleen. Die studie onthul dat die volle ekologiese impak van A. saligna op sy omgewing moeilik verstaanbaar is as gevolg van die diversiteit en kompleksiteit van fynbos asook 'n gebrek aan navorsing.

Impacts of sugarcane farming on coastal wetlands of the north coast of Zululand, Kwadukuza, South Africa

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Wetlands are key to providing important ecosystem goods and services yet they are under threat from a number of anthropogenic activities. In particular, in this study area, agriculture in the form of sugarcane farming is a threat to wetlands as sugarcane is reliant on a good water supply. The impacts of sugarcane farming emanates from the fact that sugarcane is a mono crop that requires wetland resources and uses a lot of pesticides and fertilisers. Despite the assumed contribution of sugarcane farming to wetland loss and degradation, few studies have quantitatively assessed the spatio-temporal changes in wetland extent as well as changes in water quality because of this activity. This study assesses the impacts of sugarcane farming on wetland extent and water quality in two coastal wetlands of KwaDukuza, North coast of Zululand, South Africa. Specifically this study sought to (i) assess the impacts of sugarcane farming on the spatial extent of wetlands between 1959 and 2012, (ii) determine if sugarcane farming negatively affect water quality within the wetlands and (iii) evaluate the perceptions of local farmers regarding impacts of sugarcane farming on wetlands. Results of the study indicated an increase in the extent of Zinkwazi sugarcane fields from 62.3% to 67% between 1959 and 1989 and Nonoti sugarcane fields’ extent increased from 50.5 % to 56.4% between 1959 and 2000. The last decade from the year 2000 showed gradual decrease in the area of wetland farmed by sugarcane due to the global sugar price remaining static while the cost of farming inputs increased and due to conversion of some farms to urban developments. Unfortunately, this has not lead to an increase in wetland area as the waterfront type developments, as well as a formal settlement have replace the sugarcane in the wetlands. Water was analysed for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) and results for both Zinkwazi and Nonoti indicated an increasing trend of N and P from upstream to the middle region of the rivers and a decreasing trend of the N and P from the middle region to downstream. Sugarcane farming does not take place below the middle region and so does not provide fresh sources of these nutrients. The downstream area where the N and P decrease also coincides with the area of the river under tidal influence such that the N and P are being diluted by the incoming tidal seawater. K showed an increasing trend from upstream to downstream and its values were higher than N and P. Concentrations of N and P above the South African water quality guidelines for aquatic ecosystem were recorded in the middle region. Furthermore, farmers’ perceived wetlands to have been transformed to agricultural land and related these changes to their sugarcane farming activities. It can thus, be concluded that sugarcane farming has resulted in wetland loss as well as deterioration of water quality within the Zinkwazi and Nonoti wetlands in KwaDukuza. In that regard, there isneed to engage farmers in wetland management programs in order to reduce the negative environmental impacts associated with sugarcane farming in wetlands. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Vleilande is die sleutel tot die verskaffing van ‘n belangrike ekosisteem dienste, maar hulle is onder ‘n bedreiging deur 'n aantal menslike aktiwiteite. In besonder in hierdie studie area, is Argriculture in die vorm van suikerriet boerdery is bedraging vir vleilande, en suikerriet is afhanklik van 'n goeie watervoorraad. Ten spyte van die veronderstelde bydraes van suikerriet boerdery, is die vleiland aan die agteruitgang, 'n Paar studies het kwantitatief die tydruimtelike veranderinge in die vleiland, sowel as veranderinge in die gehalte van water as gevolg van hierdie aktiwiteit waargeneem. Spesifiek is hierdie studie gepoog om (i) te bepaal wat die impak van suikerriet boerdery op die ruimtelike omvang van die vleiland tussen 1959 en 2012 is, (ii) bepaal of suikerriet boerdery negatief beïnvloed is deur die gehalte van water in die vleilande en (iii) die persepsies van plaaslike boere rakende die evalueering en impak van suikerriet boerdery op die vleilande. Resultate van die studie het aangedui 'n toename in die omvang van Zinkwazi suikerriet velde van 62,3% tot 67% tussen 1959 en 1989, en die Nonoti suikerriet velde toegeneem het met 50,5% tot 56,4% tussen 1959 en 2000. Die laaste dekade van die jaar 2000 het geleidelike afname in die area van die vleilande getoon, omdat suikerriet as gevolg van die globale suiker prys die koste van boerdery-insette verhoog het, en dit het gelei tot die omskakeling van 'n paar plase na stedelike ontwikkelings. Ongelukkig het dit nie gelei tot 'n toename in die vleiland gebiede nie, met die gevolg die waterfront tipe ontwikkelings, asook 'n formele nedersetting, vervang die suikerriet in die vleilande. Water is ontleed vir N, P en K en resultate vir beide Zinkwazi en Nonoti, het aangedui 'n toenemende tendens van stikstof en Fosfor. Dit gaan stroomop na die middel-streek van die riviere en 'n dalende neiging van die N en P uit die middel streek stroomaf. Konsentrasies van N en P bo die Suid-Afrikaanse water standaard riglyne is in die middel streek aangeteken. Verder, beskou boere dat die vleilande behoort te verander om die landbougrond en verwante veranderinge aan hul suikerriet boerdery en aktiwiteite. Ons kan dus aflei dat suikerriet boerdery het gelei tot die vleiland se verlies asook die verandering in die watergehalte in die Zinkwazi en die Nonoti vleilande in KwaDukuza. In dié verband is dit nodig dat die boere in die vleiland by programme betrek word ten einde die negatiewe omgewingsimpakte wat met suikerriet boerdery gepaard gaan in vleilande te verminder.

Two million years of environmental change : a case study from Wonderwerk Cave, Northern Cape, South Africa

The arid interior of South Africa lacks long, continuous and well-dated climate and environmental proxy records that can be compared with cultural sequences and with broader global climate records. This thesis develops the first substantial terrestrial environmental sequence for the interior of southern Africa at the site of Wonderwerk Cave, spanning two million years of prehistory. Changes in vegetation and humidity over time were investigated by means of carbon and oxygen stable isotope analysis on fossil herbivore enamel and ostrich eggshell, creating two independent proxy datasets. The Holocene record was used as a baseline for comparing the Pleistocene sequence, but required chronological tightening. Therefore, nine new radiocarbon dates were obtained, and calibrated and modelled with existing dates to provide a firmer chronology. The ostrich eggshell isotope record suggests arid but variable conditions, with distinct phases of increased humidity in the Early Pleistocene and mid-Holocene. Enamel stable isotope results show clear differences in local resource availability between the Early and Mid-Pleistocene, and then between the Pleistocene and Holocene, with an overall trend of increasing aridity. In particular, the onset of dietary specialisation in grazers at 0.8Ma is linked to expanding C4 grasslands. Aridity was not the driver behind the increase in C4 grasses, but changing pCO2 levels at the Mid Pleistocene transition were identified as a possible key factor. The presence of C3 and C4 grasses in the Early Pleistocene, when compared to the domination of C4 grasses today, was fostered by reduced rainfall seasonality. Regional independent developments have to be considered, as other regions in South and East Africa show C4 dominated diets in herbivores at earlier times than at Wonderwerk Cave. In the Holocene, higher temporal resolution indicates phases of environmental change coinciding with changes in the cultural record.

A spatial and temporal analysis of the changes in alien macrophyte communities and a baseline assessment of the macroinvertebrates associated with Eurasian watermilfoil, Myriophyllum spicatum L. (Haloragaceae) in the Vaal River

The majority of South Africa’s fresh water (lotic and lentic), is eutrophic and this has resulted in water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (C.Mart.) Solms. (Pontederiaceae) becoming South Africa’s most damaging aquatic macrophyte. Recently however, concerns have also been voiced over the presence of highly invasive submerged macrophyte species, such as Eurasian water-milfoil, Myriophyllum spicatum L. (Haloragaceae) in the Vaal River. Interaction studies between floating and submerged macrophytes have shown that floating macrophyte dominance restricts light penetration into the water column shading out submerged macrophytes while submerged macrophyte dominance reduces nutrient availability in the water column limiting floating macrophyte growth. This cycle ensures that these species cannot coexist in the same habitat for extended periods of time. The aims of this thesis were to: 1. Investigate changes in the historical and current macrophyte dominance in the Vaal River 2. Determine whether these changes could be attributed to stochastic events, such as floods and herbicide control measures. 3. The physio-chemical conditions of the water column, and whether pressure from herbivory by macroinvertebrates had possibly influenced Eurasian water-milfoil’s ability to dominate. Spatial and temporal analysis of satellite imagery revealed that water hyacinth and submerged macrophyte species dominated different regions of the study area over different periods of time from 2006 to 2010. This was significantly correlated with nitrate concentrations of the water column. One of the lower Vaal River Water Management Areas (WMA) had changed from a water hyacinth dominated state in 2006 to an alternative submerged macrophyte dominated stable state in 2008. It was concluded that this change could be attributed to: a stochastic flooding event in 2006; perturbation from integrated control measures implemented against water hyacinth; and low nitrate concentrations of the WMA. The lack of any substantial macroinvertebrate herbivory pressure or control measures implemented against Eurasian water-milfoil, compared to similar surveys conducted in the U.S.A. and its native range in Eurasia was shown to contribute to its dominance. Future successful integrated control programmes, including biological control against Eurasian water-milfoil, could provide the perturbation required to restore the ecosystem. However, without the reduction in nitrate concentration levels, water hyacinth will remain the dominant stable state of the rest of the Vaal River.
