The foundation for revolution : educational reforms in late Chʻing China

Asbell, Andrea 01 January 1991 (has links)
Historical consensus has labeled the educational reform efforts of China's scholar-officials in the second half of the nineteenth century as merely reactions to external circumstances and therefore has concluded that these reforms were "failures". The youthful revolt against Chinese cultural traditions, which culminated in the May Fourth Movement of 1919, has frequently been cited as a clear demonstration that previous educational reforms had failed. However, when viewed as the intellectual phase of the revolutionary process, reform activities among members of China's bureaucratic and scholarly elite in the four and one half decades from the 1860s to the early 1900s can be seen as limited, but definite, successes, initiated from within the traditional society and assisted by the introduction of Western secular knowledge by Protestant missionaries.

Constructions of Muslim identity : women and the education reform movement in colonial India

Madhani, Taslim. January 2005 (has links)
This thesis examines educational reforms initiated by British colonial officials in late nineteenth/early twentieth century India and the responses they ensued from Indian Muslim reformers. Focusing on the "woman question," British colonizers came to the conviction that the best method to "civilize" Indian society was to educate women according to modern Western standards. Muslim reformers sought to resolve the "woman question" for themselves by combining their own ideologies of appropriate female education with Western ones. Muslim reformers were also deeply concerned with the disappearance of Islamic identity owing to colonial educational policies. Reformers placed the responsibility of maintaining Islamic culture on the shoulders of women so as to both resolve the debate over the proper place of women in society and retain a distinct Islamic identity in the changing Indian context. This resolution limited Indian Muslim women's access to education as well as their participation in Indian society at large.

Utopies et pédagogie dans la littérature du dix-septième siècle

Schneider, Jean-Daniel January 1980 (has links)

Ideological shifts in the education of adults in China, 1949-1986

Rong, Meng January 1991 (has links)
The educational policy for adults in China has fluctuated over the 40-year period since the founding of the People's Republic of China. The purpose of this study will include the effects on adult education of ideological shifts in the underlying educational philosophy related to social and political development in China during the three identifiable key periods of change associated with the re-building and development of the nation from 1949 to 1986; namely, (1) 1949-1966, the beginning of the Communist Era; (2) 1966-1976, the Cultural revolution period; (3) 1976-1986, the period after the Cultural Revolution. / In many cases, the development of Chinese education for adults has been quite irregular due to political upheavals. Marxist principles of education have been felt in China to be difficult to integrate with the developmental needs of the country. Commitment to adult education as an important element of the development pattern has been high, but political struggle has seriously hampered educational expansion. The struggle within the high-level leadership seems to have been the most direct reason for ideological shifts over the 37 year period.

The establishment of the American Presbyterian Mission in Egypt, 1854-1940 : an overview

Burke, Jeffrey Charles. January 2000 (has links)
This dissertation examines the educational contributions of the American Mission in Egypt using previously untapped archival documents from the Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia. The principal focus of this research is on the establishment of American Mission schools in Egypt. The successes and failures of this missionary movement's work with Copts and Muslims are examined within the context of demographic data and political history. The study also discusses Egyptian anti-missionary sentiments directed against the American Mission in the 1920s and 30s, and constitutes an exploration of Christian-Muslim relations in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Egypt.
