Disaster Response| Efficacy of Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment in Mass Casualty Incidents

Crews, Carly M. 30 November 2018 (has links)
<p> The purpose of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment (START) triage during actual mass casualty incidents (MCI) and full-scale MCI exercises. Developed in 1984, Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment triage was created to assist in the process of triaging large quantities of injured patients from natural or manmade disasters and has since been the nationally accepted triage model in the United States. Historically, limited studies have shown patients are in fact, over-triaged 53% of the time. The research goal was to obtain substantial data to determine whether first responders&rsquo; use of the current triage model effectively sustains life. A mixed methods research analysis of quantitative and qualitative data collected from one historical MCI incident and three MCI exercises was evaluated to develop recommendations for protocol change and future curriculum development. Data analysis from actual incidents and exercises confirm that &ldquo;just-in-time&rdquo; training does increase the accuracy of the START triage model used from 42% to 73%. </p><p>

Exploring Incivility among Nursing and Health Science Students| A Descriptive Study

Smith, Diane Louise 06 December 2018 (has links)
<p> Incivility has infiltrated our institutions of higher learning as well as the world of nursing. All too familiar in nursing is the phrase &ldquo;eating their young,&rdquo; which aptly describes how nurses treat other nurses, even though they should be nurturing and caring professionals. The investigator explored nursing and health science students&rsquo; perceptions of student and faculty uncivil behaviors within the academic environment, seeking the levels and frequency of the problem. Bandura&rsquo;s social learning theory presents a sound theoretical framework for this dissertation. The research methodology consisted of a quantitative descriptive approach. The Incivility in Higher Education-Revised (IHE-R) Survey was used to compare nursing and health science student perceptions of the level and frequency of student and faculty incivility. Descriptive statistics and independent t tests were used to compare the different student perceptions. The study results indicated that perceptions of student behavioral levels were between <i>somewhat </i> and <i>moderately</i> uncivil. Student perceptions of faculty behavioral levels were found to be more <i>moderate</i>. Review of the frequency levels reflected students&rsquo; frequencies to be <i> never</i> as compared with faculty, which indicated a frequency of <i> sometimes</i>. These results indicated that students perceived incivility to not be problematic within their individual programs, although it found faculty behavior levels were more uncivil even when similar behaviors were demonstrated by students. In general, these results were atypical than other results as incivility is found to be a rising problem. Further study is needed to confirm these results. </p><p>

Nursing Student Perceptions of Academic and Clinical Integrity in Bachelor of Science Programs

Eberle, Dianne 26 July 2018 (has links)
<p> Student perceptions of academic dishonesty and clinical integrity were explored in this qualitative study, with Bandura&rsquo;s social learning theory utilized as the primary framework for the study and Kohlberg&rsquo;s theory of moral development as the secondary framework. A basic qualitative methodology was employed to answer the research question: what are student perceptions of moral beliefs and their actions related to ethical decision making in a four-year Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) program? The target population was junior or senior year nurses in a four-year BSN program. The sample included 17 students who met the inclusion criteria. Participants were asked 17 open-ended interview questions to gain insight into their perceptions of academic dishonesty and clinical integrity. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed manually to provide further immersion in the data. Data analysis and collection occurred simultaneously and was inductive and comparative. During data analysis, five themes emerged, each with subthemes which were identified through supporting narrative comments from participant interviews. The five identified themes were used to answer the research question and included: student perceptions of academic dishonesty, student perceptions of clinical integrity, student perceptions of moral beliefs, student perceptions of ethical decision making, and student perceptions of what influenced academic dishonesty. This study adds to the current body of knowledge of nursing literature regarding academic dishonesty and clinical integrity. Results could provide assistance to higher education institutions to solve problems involving academic dishonest behaviors on college campuses. This study builds on the current literature and serves as a foundation for future research to solve this decades old problem. </p><p>

Risk Factors of High Blood Pressure in Older South Africans

Mbaissouroum, Mouanodji 25 April 2018 (has links)
<p> High blood pressure (HBP) is a worldwide concern in many countries (Keamey, et al., 2005). HBP is likely to be higher in underdeveloped countries, specifically in Africa (Addo, Smeeth, &amp; Leon, 2007; Kearney, et al.,2005; World Health Organization [WHO], 2015). The prevalence of HBP in South Africa is 21%, which is about 6 million individuals (Steyn, Gaziano, Bradshaw, Laubscher, &amp; Fourier, 2001). The purpose of the study is to examine the predictive factors of HBP among older adults in South Africa. This cross-sectional study used secondary data from the World Health Organization (WHO &amp; Phaswana-Mafaya, 2008). The total number of participants included in this sample was 2,145 adults age 60 and over, of which females comprise 59%. The average age was 69.50 years (<i>SD= 7.63</i>). The prevalence of reporting HBP among respondents was 37%. The multivariate analysis shows that, when other factors are controlled, being female, having a larger waist circumference, having a diagnosis of diabetes and depression, and urban residence significantly predicted HBP among older South Africans. When comparing men and women, the results of the logistic regression shows that the decrease of odds of having HBP among men who have diabetes and depression is less than the decrease of odds of having HBP among women who have diabetes and depression. These findings indicate that the risk factors, diabetes and depression, have a bigger effect on females compared to males. The results of the study will help to implement primary HBP prevention targeting South African older adult females who have been diagnosed with diabetes, depression, and who live in urban areas.</p><p>

ValidaÃÃo de um vÃdeo educativo para a promoÃÃo do apego seguro entre mÃe soropositiva para o HIV e seu filho. / Validate an educative video for the promotion of the attachment between puerperal HIV-infected and their children

RÃgia Cristina Moura Barbosa 22 December 2008 (has links)
The maternity demands from the woman physical, psychological and social adaptations. To the HIV positive person the HIV beyond all these adaptations, the new mother lives deeply delicate and difficult experiences as not to suckle, the isolation, the discrimination and the stigma that suffers for same herself, for the familiar ones and the team of health that cares. The fear to die and to have contaminated her children, added to not suckling are factors that take the distant behaviors, harming the attitude of attachment between the binomial mother and baby. The attachment is essential for the formation of the affective bond and the personality, being able to harm the development of the child, in case she is put off to the attachment figure. Our work had as objective to construct an educative video for the promotion of the attachment between HIV positive mother and her son. This was a methodological type study, clinical assay, randomized. To the construction and validation of the educative video, the research went through five stages: Development of the script; Evaluation of the script for two specialists of content and two of the technique area; Writing and Edition of the video; Exhibition of the video and Evaluation of the Interaction Mother and Baby. The collection of data occurred between May and October of 2008, in a maternity of the city of Fortaleza. The participants had been divided randomized in Group Control and Group of Intervention, totalizing a sample of 24 participants. The population was composed for 27 HIV positive pregnant, where three had not obeyed the criteria of inclusion of the study. We use as instruments to collect the data: questionnaire for evaluation of the script; form of the socioeconomic profile; field diary and the Protocol of the Evaluation of the Interaction Mother and Baby of 0 the 6 months. For the analysis of the data we use the Statistical Test Kolmogorov-Smirnov with (p<0, 05). The specialists had agreed to the development of the video as educative strategy, requesting modifications: reduction of the number of scenes; Substitution of terms technician for colloquial language; computerized effect of figures and greater interaction between the personages. After the creation of the video, it was transmitted for the participants of the Group of Intervention. Feelings had been observed as joy, hope and anxiety. After the interview with the participants of the two groups, we set appointments in accordance with the probable date of the childbirth, the evaluation of the interaction between mother and baby. Three female judges who had filmed dÃade and had evaluated the interaction between the same ones took part in this stage. The results had been more satisfactory for the Group of Intervention, that is, the women who had attended the video and received orientations from the researcher. For evaluation of the interaction between the binomials, the used protocol praises the following criteria for evaluation: verbalization; visual contact; general attention of the mother; positive affection; efficiency to console; reaction of the mother I cry to it of the baby; reply to the social behavior Intensity of the reply; sensitivity; corporal contact; negative affection and intrusivity. Of the evaluated behaviors only that they had not had statistical differences for the two the groups had been the verbalization; the negative affection and intrusivity. Thus, we consider important the creation of educative strategies that aim at the promotion of the attachment; we believe to be this video a support for the professionals who work with this specific clientele.

Power Plant, Plant-Based Nutrition Services| A Business Plan

Lopez, Ashley Karisa 13 March 2018 (has links)
<p> Today, obesity has become the number one concern of kids and teens. About one in three Americans are overweight or obese. This in part is due to the consumption of highly commercialized and processed foods that lack the essential nutrients in maintaining a healthy weight in addition to normal cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Studies have shown that eating habits are learned early in life and are carried on throughout the rest of their lives. As children grow older into their adolescent years, they are more aware of their eating habits and have gained more autonomy in regards to food choices. </p><p> Plant-based foods have shown to drastically improve the overall health of individuals with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and excess weight. </p><p> Power Plant is a facility that intends offer plant-based nutritional services in the form of informative lectures, interactive workshops, one-on-one nutritional guidance by appointment, with access to peer-mentors for additional support and guidance. Power Plant will dedicate their services to the Whittier Union high school district, surrounding community colleges, and universities in the Los Angeles County area. </p><p> Power Plant&rsquo;s unique program design, physician referrals and the critical need of our generations to come, are all factors that will contribute to its success in the Los Angeles County community and for years to come.</p><p>

The Experiences of African American Women Participating in Church-based Weight Loss Programs

Shanks, Mangle L. 14 October 2017 (has links)
<p> While obesity is a nationwide phenomenon, African Americans &ndash; especially women &ndash; continue to be more severely affected than any other ethnic group. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 20% of African American women are obese compared to 15.6% of Caucasian women. The church is an important community center for many African Americans, and is often a site for health promotion programs, though little is known of the effectiveness of these programs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to study the experiences and attitudes of African American women who have gone through a church-based weight-loss program. Questions were asked about the cultural, environmental and social barriers to weight loss, and the components of effective church-based weight loss programs. Using a phenomenological approach, this study was designed to capture new data for the development of sustainable church-based weight-loss programs. The theory of social support was used as a theoretical framework. The major themes arising from the data concerned the importance of: (a) social support on all levels; (b) the involvement of the pastor, his spouse, or other church leadership; (c) the inclusion of weight-loss participants in program design; (d) a holistic program design to meet the needs of the entire family; and (e) a culturally sensitive program. The inclusion of all these elements is recommended for future programs. The social change implication is that these recommendations could be helpful in the design, development, and implementation of sustainable church-based weight-loss programs for African American women.</p><p>
