The effect of egg weight hatchability, chick hatch-weight and subsequent productivity of Venda chickens

Thamaga, Marupine Windy January 2010 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc. (Agric)) --University of Limpopo, 2010 / An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of egg weight on hatchability, hatch-weight and subsequent productivity of Venda chickens. A total of 360 Venda chicken eggs based on their weights were collected within one week and assigned to four treatments with five replicates of 18 eggs per replicate. A randomized design was used. The four treatment weights were below 49 g, between 50 and 59 g, between 60 and 69 g and above 70 g. the eggs were incubated for 21 days. The chicks were raised up to 13 weeks based on their treatments but fed a similar diet. Egg weight was positively and strongly correlated (r2 = 0.727) with hatchability. Similarly, egg weight was positively and strongly correlated (r2 = 0.0.953) with chick hatch-weight. Between one and seven weeks old, Venda chicks hatched from heavier eggs ate less (P< 0.05) than those hatched from lighter eggs. Heavier eggs hatched chicks with better (P< 0.05) feed conversion ratio. However, chicks hatched from heavier eggs tended to have higher (P< 0.05) live weight at seven weeks old than those hatched from lighter eggs. Heavier eggs tended to hatch chicks that had higher (P< 0.05) mortality rates. However, metabolisable energy and nitrogen retention of the chicks aged seven weeks was not (P> 0.05) affected by egg weight. Growth rate and live weight of the chicks aged between one and seven weeks were optimized at different Venda chicken egg weights of 56 (r2 = 0.514) and 60 (r2 = 0.870) g, respectively. Egg weight had no (P> 0.05) effect on metabolisable energy, feed conversion ratio, growth rate, live weight, carcass weight and carcass parts of Venda chickens aged between eight and 13 weeks except fat pad weight. Venda chickens hatched from lighter eggs had lower (P< 0.05) fat pad weights than those hatched from heavier eggs. Meat samples of chickens hatched from lighter eggs had higher (P< 0.05) nitrogen contents. It is concluded that Venda chicken egg weight affects (P< 0.05) egg hatchability, chick hatch-weight, growth rate, live weight and carcass characteristics of the chicken. However, these variables are optimized at different egg weights. This has implications on selecting eggs for incubation.

A Feasibility Study of eggs home delivery in Taiwan---in marketing perspective

Feng, Chao-chun 10 August 2005 (has links)
Most of the patterns of distribution channel of eggs traditional industry are through the middlemen. Therefore the distribution channel classifies multiple-steps distribution channel system. The price relationship between producers and sales works out by the middlemen for a long time and consequently cause many different viewpoints and conflicts about the price decision. In spite of the middlemen realize and tacitly agree the system of price establishment is not reasonable. They still can not change the actuality because it goes all the year round. Up to now, the producers and sales can not create a win-win situation. The change of marketing channels will reform structures of the production, sales and price forms. Therefore this study takes the home delivery as main body for the eggs marketing channels research, and adopts in-depth interview method to get data and information. At the same time this study penetrates the marketing strategy of egg industry , the business developments and characteristics of home deliveries. This study proceeds to interview the above information as SWOT analysis. To find out the feasibility of eggs home delivery and the point of strategy and problems. Finally, this study would offer some solution aspects and suggestions. The results showed that from the viewpoint of return, the possible pattern of eggs home delivery could create producers much mighty possibilities and big changes by a series of ways to make difference. It means that this study adopts the niche market to be the strategy of market segment and finds the target market and proper marketing mix, the package variation, functional egg developments, confidence-building with home deliveries and regulated contract of products quality. So that producers could develop the private channels and private label brand to change the price-decision system to reach the sustainable development.

Species composition of epipelagic fish eggs in winter and spatiotemporal distribution of Engraulid eggs in the coastal waters off southwestern Taiwan

-Yi, Yi 12 September 2007 (has links)
This study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of abundances of the fish eggs and Engraulid eggs in relation to environmental factors along the coastal waters off southwestern Taiwan. Moreover, the key to fish eggs under an optical microscope in winter(January) was revised. Samplings were carried out on a bimonthly basis. In total, 38 tows were conducted from January to November 2003.The samplings of eggs were collected by horizontal hauls with NORPAC and cyclindricalconic net at the water surface along Jiading, Linyuan and Fangliao. Sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity, dissolve oxygen, chlorophyll a concentration and density were measured simultaneously with a seabird CTD. The spatiotemporal distribution of the total eggs abundances of two kinds of nets were very similar, and more the abundance of cyclindricalconic net than the NORPAC net. Therefore, the total eggs abundance and species of cyclindricalconic net were adopted to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of the eggs along the coastal waters off southwestern Taiwan. The total abundances of fish eggs demonstrated significant seasonal variations highest in July and lowest in November. The geographical difference was also observed that the highest abundances were recorded at Jiading, and followed by Linyuan and Fangliao. Based on the results of correlation analyses, it was revealed that the spatiotemporal fluctuations in the total abundances of fish eggs were significant positive correlated to the monthly variation of precipitation. 2,110 fish eggs were obtained from six samples in January, 2003, including Ophichthidae, Clupeidae, Synodontidae, Scaridae, Callionymidae, Soleidae , Cynoglossidae and Engraulidae. The fish eggs that couldn¡¦t be identified were firstly sorted into 28 groups by the egg shape, size, and membrane pattern. Furthermore, they were stored into 64 species based on the presence or absence, and the pattern of pigmentation. The group BIII, Engraulids eggs and unknown dead eggs were the top three dominant species. Due to the different composition of the dominant species, there were significant differences in the spatial distribution. The species composition of dominant group were the Callionymids eggs and unknown dead eggs in Jiading. The species composition of dominance group were group BIII , Engraulids eggs and unknown dead eggs in Linyuan, and Fangliao. In 2003, Engraulids eggs were very abundant in the coastal waters off southwestern Taiwan, representing 14% of the total fish egg abundances. Two peaks of Engraulids eggs abundances were found. One in the July to September 2003, and other one in January 2003. Spatial distribution in the abundances were also observed that the highest abundances were recorded at Fangliao, and followed by Linyuan and Jiading. The mortality rate of the Engraulids eggs was the reverse trends and spatial distribution of the Engraulids eggs abundances. The abundances of eggs were increased when precipitation was high and abundance of Amphipoda was low. The shape of Engraulids eggs was displayed regional differences. Engraulids eggs in Jiading and Fangliao were elongated shape, and oval shape in Linyuan. Seasonal variation in the egg shape was observed and also segregated into two groups representing elongated eggs group in May, July and September and oval eggs group in January, March and November, respectively. Engraulids eggs longitudinal diameter was significantly positive correlated with the SST and monthly precipitation, and were negatively correlated with sea surface salinity, dissolve oxygen and density. Maybe the group BIII was Mugilids eggs. Their spawning ground occurred in Linyuan. Furthermore, the spawning ground of both Callionymids eggs and Synodontids eggs were at Linyuan and Fangliao. The main spawning grounds of Engraulids eggs were at Linyuan and Fangliao along the coastal waters off southwestern Taiwan. The peak spawning season were in summer and winter 2003. The spawning time of Engraulids eggs was approximately at 00:00 to 01:00. The spatiotemporal variations of Engraulids eggs size were influenced by the alternation of the spawning grounds of Engraulids fish along the coastal waters off southwestern Taiwan.

Improvement of fertility and hatchability of artificially incubated ostrich eggs in the little Karoo

Van Schalkwyk, Salmon Jacobus January 1998 (has links)
Ostriches are an important commercial species in South Africa and are becoming increasingly so in other parts of the world. Fertility and hatchability of artificially incubated ostrich eggs, however, is generally regarded as low compared to other poultry species and to ostriches in the wild. Investigation into specific farming practices at present indicated scope for an overall improvement in productivity through a sound breeding strategy. This thesis investigated factors that affect egg production, fertility, and hatchability of artificially incubated eggs in the Little Karoo region of South Africa. Specific breeding pair combinations accounted for the major variations in egg weight, hatchability, chick production and offspring weight at slaughter age. An appreciable proportion of variation in reproductive traits was attributable to the repeatable nature of breeding pair performance from year to year, even from first breeding attempts, suggesting that selection of good breeding stock can be made from an early age. Artificially incubated eggs showed improved hatchability when eggs were collected two to three hours after lay rather than the following morning. Storing position of eggs did not significantly effect hatchability when eggs were stored for a maximum of one week. The critical zero temperature for ostrich eggs, below which no embryonical development takes place, was found to be ± 25°C and cooling eggs to temperatures below 20°C for complete cessation of embryonic development during storage resulted in better hatchabilities compared to eggs stored at 25°C room temperature. Hatchability decreased when incubator temperatures were raised from 36 to 37.3°C. Large temperature fluctuations and gradients, which encompass detrimental temperatures, persist within forced draught wooden incubators of the type most commonly in use in the Little Karoo region. The highest temperatures occurred at the top of these incubators and will consequently have a negative impact on hatchability. The ontogeny of ostrich egg metabolism showed an exponential increase during the first 70% of incubation followed by a decline to 75% of the peak value between days 31 and 38 of incubation. From peak levels of embryonic development it was calculated that single stage incubators needs an airflow of 54.4 1/egg.hour to maintain oxygen levels just below 21% and carbon dioxide levels below 0.5%. Lower embryonic mortalities were observed when eggs were turned twenty-four times/day in an electronic incubator compared to hand turning twice a day. Eggs rotated through increasing angles between 60 and 90° resulted in a linear improvement in hatchability. In incubators where turning angles were fixed at 60°, lower hatchabilities were overcome by incubating eggs for 2 - 3 weeks in a horizontal position before placing them vertically. No specific farming practice could be singled out as the main cause of low fertility or hatchability but rather a combination of certain practices applied wrongly.

Effect of size of delivery and type of market outlet on cost of delivering table eggs by selected egg grading plants in Virginia

Martin, Cornelius Jamison January 1962 (has links)
Data on egg delivery routes were obtained from a sample of nine selected Federal-State egg grading stations located in four different areas of Virginia. These data included time and distance requirements, route characteristics and a basis for computing costs. Based upon the time requirements--which included driving time, personal time and time at the stop--and the distance traveled, cost estimates were obtained. Cost comparisons were made by size of plant, size of delivery and type of outlet. Wide variation in delivery costs were found. Delivery costs showed a meaningful decline as volume of delivery increased. Significant differences in delivery costs among different types of market outlets were found. Volume-cost relationships observed indicated that larger volumes of eggs were consistently delivered to certain types of outlets at the smallest unit cost. The marginal cost of delivering selected volumes of eggs specified distances was calculated. / Master of Science
