BASE ISOLATION USING STABLE UNBONDED FIBRE REINFORCED ELASTOMERIC ISOLATORS (SU-FREI)

Foster, Andrew Douglas Barry 04 1900 (has links)
<p>Seismic isolation is a seismic design philosophy that aims to reduce the demand on structures as opposed to increasing their capacity to endure forces. Seismic isolation can be achieved by placing isolating bearings with relatively low stiffness compared to the structure itself beneath the superstructure. This low stiffness layer increases the structural period, shifting the structure into a period range of low seismic energy content.</p> <p>The objectives of this research were to investigate the dynamic properties, durability and limitations of stable unbonded fibre reinforced elastomeric isolator (SU-FREI) bearings. Vertical compression testing indicated the bearings possessed adequate vertical stiffness. Due to lack of bonding at the bearing interface surfaces rollover deformation was observed to occur during lateral cyclic testing. This response behaviour was found to result in advantageous effective lateral stiffness and damping properties. The bearings maintained stability during rollout testing while serviceability and fatigue testing both conformed to code specified test specimen adequacy limitations. Experimental shake table testing showed that the isolated structure behaved essentially as a rigid body during testing. Test results showed that a SU‐FREI isolation system significantly reduced the seismic demand on the structure.</p> <p>Modelling of the bearings dynamic properties was completed using a bilinear model and a backbone curve model. Both models showed adequate results in predicting experimental peak responses. A simplified design spectrum analysis was presented and used to model the structure in four Canadian cities. This design spectrum analysis approach showed adequate capabilities in predicting peak response values, such that the method could be used in preliminary analysis and design of isolated structures.</p> / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Modelagem da dinâmica vertical de coxins elastoméricos de motor através de método de redes neurais / Modeling vertical dynamic of elastomeric engine mounts using artificial neural networks

Oliveira, Paulo Afonso Coppi Aquino de 03 October 2011 (has links)
This dissertation scope is the modeling of an elastomeric mount, element which has primordial role on powertrain vibration isolation. The study of the mechanic behavior of those elastomeric materials is a field being studied for several years agor since its complexity and non-linarity of those components; and a reliable math models are competitive edge. So this dissertation has as main object purpose the modeling of an elastomeric engine mount using neural networks technician to predict the transfer function between the mount displacement and engine vertical accelerationTwo training approachs experimental data gathered in a uniaxial hydraulic bench and experimental data gathered in field are presented with the objective of identify the condition which the neural network presents better prediction performance. So this comparison being made a metric based on power density spectral area is presented to quantify the performance on the frequency range studied (0-40 Hz). Finally a comparison is made with a mechanical model composed per springs and dumpers combined. The results show that even the training made with the bench data and the mechnical model present good correlation from 0 Hz to 14 Hz while the training made with field data has good correlation from 0 Hz to 14 Hz and 23 Hz to 40 Hz once this approach has the ability to capture the hysteresis and part of rubber non-linearity. It is demonstrated that the frequency range where all the models are not capable to predict, there is a vibration mode where there is a node on the studied mount which dificults the modeling. The conclusion is that the neural network technique has great potential on its usage, presenting very satisfactory results, among other vantages as the processing speed after the network is trained.

Dobijeni podaci o obrazovanju vodoničnih veza, termičkoj stabilnosti i termičkoj dekompoziciji, kao i o temperaturama prelaska u staklasto stanje i oblasti raskidanja čvorova fizičkih veza, predstavljaju značajan doprinos napretku strukturiranja poliuretanskih elastomera i nanokompozita na osnovu alifatičnih polikarbonatnih diola, i omogućavaju primenu ovih materijala za specijalne namene.</p> / <p>The structuring of elastomeric composites by addition of different nanofillers has led to a significant improvement of their end-use properties, and therefore, to their potential application as suitable materials for special applications. In this work, two types of elastomeric hybrid materials for special purposes were obtained (based on styrene-bustadiene elastomer or on segmented thermoplastic polyurethanes).<br />In the first part of the study, a major contribution to the development of the rubber industry was achieved by structuring styrene-butadiene nanocomposites, applying silica nanoparticles of various morphological properties: prepared by hydrothermal or thermal treatment, three experimentally prepared SiO2 fillers (obtained by precipitation from sodium silicate with sulfuric acid), as well as a hybrid filler (combination of carbon black and SiO2 fillers with optimal properties). The analysis of the influence of the nanoparticles structure, surface and surface activity on the reinforcment of SBR elastomers, as well as the verification of concepts, models and reinforcement theories on non-cross-linked and cross-linked systems of styrene-butadiene nanocomposites was performed. Using the numerous characterization methods, the influence of nanofillers on the mixing characteristics, the rheological properties of the prepared hybrid nanocomposites, as well as the thermal, dynamic-mechanical and mechanical properties of cross-linked SBR nanocomposites was studied, in order to design and optimize the composition of SBR hybrid materials for development of environmental friendly or &quot;green&quot; tyre protector model.<br />The second part of the research was devoted to the preparation of segmented polyurethane elastomeric nanocomposites using aliphatic polycarbonate diols and bentonite nanoparticles, that have found the significant application in the medicine, construction, the furniture and sports equipment industry. Modification des propriétés du polypropylène par mise en oeuvre réactive/Modification of polypropylene properties by reactive processing

Henry, Gaëtan 26 April 2006 (has links)
This work is part of a project supported by the Walloon Region, and it was performed in collaboration between the Chimie Organique et Médicinale (CHOM), Chimie Structurale et des Mécanismes Réactionnels (CSTR), and Chimie et Physique des Hauts Polymères (POLY) laboratories. Its object is the modification of the isotactic polypropylene (PP) properties by reactive processing, and more especially the control of PP crystallinity by means of a brominated additive (N-bromosuccinimide) in presence of a free radical initiator at high temperatures (between 180 and 260°C). The main objective of this study is to identify and to control the modifications induced in the products, which implies a fine understanding of the chemical mechanisms occuring during the PP reactive processing. This knowledge would allow us, subsequently, to substitute another additive for the N-bromosuccinimide (which yields toxic and polluting by-products), in order to achieve a better applicability of both the process and the products. The strategy relies on a double approach : on one side, on a study of the various parameters affecting the reaction on the polymer, and on the other side on the synthesis of a model compound of PP : 2,4,6,8,10-pentamethylundecane (PMU). By means of reactive extrusion of the polymer, we obtained controlled crystallinity PP's (from semi-crystalline to amorphous), including some with an elastomeric behaviour. Studies carried out mainly by thermal analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance allowed us to correlate these macroscopic properties to an isotactic/atactic stereoblock microstructure (epimerization of the PP tertiary carbons), combined with the presence of long chain branchings (recombination of macroradicals). Moreover, we highlighted the various parameters that are able to influence the yield of the epimerization reaction. Even if the informations arising from these studies allowed us to propose the main mechanisms involved in the PP modification, only a mechanistic study carried out on a model compound would give us access to the characterization methods required for the confirmation of these mechanisms. We undertook, subsequently, the synthesis of a propene oligomer. The PMU synthesis, as stated in the litterature, revealed itself more difficult than initially foreseen, mainly due to a lack of reproducibility concerning the key step. Therefore we established a new synthesis pathway for the PMU (as a mixture of stereoisomers) with a global yield of 45% over 7 steps (multigram scale). Moreover, this pathway gave us access to 6-hydroxymethyl-2,4,8,10-tetramethylundecane and 6-p-toluenesulfonyloxymethyl-2,4,8,10-tetramethylundecane, for which chromatographic techniques allowed a separation of the diastereoisomers. The transposition of these experiments on a larger scale would allow us to obtain the (4R,6s,8S)-PMU for future mechanistic studies relative to the epimerization reaction of initially isotactic PP.

A New Formulation For The Analysis Of Bonded Elastic Layers

Pinarbasi, Seval 01 April 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Elastic layers bonded to reinforcing sheets are widely used in many engineering applications, e.g., as elastic foundations to machinery, as seismic isolators to structures, etc. Because of its practical importance, the behavior of bonded elastic layers under some basic deformation modes (e.g., compression, bending and shear modes) has attracted the attention of many researchers. However, the analytical works available in literature involve, with the object of obtaining design formulas, many simplifying assumptions. In this dissertation, a new formulation is developed for the analysis of bonded elastic layers, which removes most of the assumptions used in the earlier formulations. Since the displacement boundary conditions are included in the formulation itself, there is no need to start the formulation with some assumptions on stress and/or displacement distributions or with some limitations on geometrical and/or material properties. For this reason, the solutions derived from this formulation are valid not only for &ldquo / thin&rdquo / layers of strictly/nearly incompressible materials but also for &ldquo / thick&rdquo / layers and/or compressible materials. The advanced solutions obtained within the framework of the new formulation are used to study the behavior of bonded elastic layers under basic deformation modes. The effects of three key parameters, shape factor, Poisson&rsquo / s ratio and reinforcement flexibility, on effective layer moduli, displacement/stress distributions, and location/magnitude of maximum stresses are investigated. It is shown that the stress assumptions of the &ldquo / pressure&rdquo / method are inconsistent with the results obtained for thick layers and/or compressible materials and/or flexible reinforcements, and that the assumption &ldquo / plane sections remain plane&rdquo / is not valid, in general.

The characterizations of torque rheometry, melt flow index measurement (MFI), measuring the density and the degree of cristallinity by pycnometry, tensile testing, method of work essential fracture (EWF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed in pure polymer and blends PMMA/PET. The rheological results showed evidence of signs of chemical reaction between the epoxy group MGE with the end groups of the PET chains and also to the elastomeric phase of PMMA. The increase in the concentration of PET reduced torque and adding MGE increased the torque of the blend of PMMA/PET. The results of the MFI also show that elastomeric PMMA showed lower flow and thus higher viscosity than PET. In the results of picnometry observed that increasing the percentage of PET resulted in an increase in density and degree crystallinity of the blends PMMA/PET. The tensile test showed that increasing the percentage of PET resulted in an increase in ultimate strength and elastic modulus and decrease in elongation at break. However, in the phase inversion, where the blend showed evidence of a co-continuous morphology and also, with 30% PET dispersed phase and compatibilized with 5% MGE, there were significant results elongation at break compared to elastomeric PMMA. The applicability of the method of essential work of fracture was shown to be possible for most formulations. And it was observed that with increasing elastomeric PMMA in the formulations of the blends there was an improvement in specific amounts of essential work of fracture (We) and a decrease in the values of specific non-essential work of fracture (&#946;Wp) / Neste trabalho ? estudada a blenda imisc?vel poli(metacrilato de metila) (PMMA) elastom?rico com poli(tereftalato de etileno) (PET) grau garrafa com e sem o uso do agente compatibilizante, poli(metacrilato de metila-co-metacrilato de glicidilaco- acrilato de etila) (MGE).

Avaliação das propriedades mecânicas e reológicas de composições de butadieno-estireno (SBR) com resíduos elastoméricos de pneus inservíveis / Evaluation of mechanical and rheological properties of butadiene-styrene(SBR) compounds filled with elastomeric wastes from useless tires

Currently, the great appeal about the ambiental questions has forced much more companies and industries around the world to search ecological alternatives to their activities. Dissertation was to show butadiene-styrene (SBR) compounds filled with varied concentrations of elastomeric wastes from useless tires obtained from recapping factories processes. The samples were submitted to mechanical and rheologycal evaluation. The results showed that samples obtained by addition of up to 120 phr of elastomeric wastes had the best mechanical performance considering tear strength in comparison to sample with only carbon black as filler. Rheological experiments, specially strain sweep tests, showed to be an important tool to predict the homogeneity of compositions and their sensibilities to strain at constant frequency and temperature.
