In this context, the objective of the present work is to carry out feasibility studies of the compact secondary networks in the distribution system of CELG D, an electric power distribution concessionaire and a crucial element of the electrical system of the state of Goiás, Brazil. The development of this research took into consideration the initial investment, the operational cost and the performance of these networks. It can therefore be concluded that, although the cost of implementation of the compact network is approximately 14% higher than the conventional cost, its installation is extremely viable because, in addition to reducing the preventive maintenance services required for this network, there is an improvement in the continuity of electrical power supply, two factors that are fundamental in an increasingly competitive market.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jorge Isaac Rodriguez Rodriguez.pdf: 1323419 bytes, checksum: 4200a77bd6a2f02a314bd07b92e57da8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-02-28 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / In this work a framework for development of electric energy systems applications is proposed, on which several methodologies of analysis can be integrated or be adapted. An application of that framework has been developed to quantify the economic aspect for the improvement of power systems dynamic security based on preventive control. The following methodologies have been integrated for this objective: power systems dynamic security assessment, calculation of preventive control measures for dynamic security improvement and economic quantification of the impact caused by the application of those measures. Dynamic security assessment function uses a fast methodology based on transient energy function for contingencies dynamic ranking and a time-domain based methodology for the dynamic evaluation of contingencies. This last function has been implemented using a distributed processing environment. The power system dynamic security level is defined according to heuristic criteria which will determine the need of application of some control measure. The preventive control measures are defined when establishing the maximum limits of generation; those measures are calculated with fast methods without the use of sensitivities. Power system operation feasibility considering the new generation limits is obtained using a non linear optimal power flow program (OPF) with an objective function of load shedding minimization. The new operation condition of the power system is calculated following technical and economic considerations with the use of an OPF for several objective functions. The framework was projected using object-oriented methodology and CORBA (common object request broker architecture) architecture and has been coded in C++ and Java languages. Complete implementation of the described methodologies has been successfully tested with the Anderson-Fouad WECC-3 generators system and with a configuration of 44 generators of the interconnected Brazilian system. Analysis of results indicates that preventive control allows an improvement of power system dynamic security and a corresponding reduction in the economic impact after the occurrence of severe disturbances.

The methodology is based on the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for the intelligent processing of input signals of the commutator. The neural nets adequately trained allow to create an information system and dedicated diagnosis of the OLTC. This system can interpret and diagnosis the components through the real time input signals in order to delay the power transformer maintenance intervals, foreseeing when the OLTC is going to maintenance have intervention based on its condition. It has been adopted a multiperceptron ANN architecture in which the input vector has 22 components and the output considers only one component with the status of the OLTC condition in function of its operation time. This output information is used to determine the periods of maintenance of the commutators. It is reported an application of the proposed system considering the on load tap changer of an autotransformer bank of 500/230/13.8 kV, 600MVA of Centrais Elétricas do Norte do Brasil S/A (ELETRONORTE). The results indicate the advantages of the maintenance based on the condition using ANN.

Reinforcement Learning for Grid Voltage Stability with FACTS

Oldeen, Joakim, Sharma, Vishnu January 2020 (has links)
With increased penetration of renewable energy sources, maintaining equilibrium between production and consumption in the world’s electrical power systems (EPS) becomes more and more challenging. One way to increase stability and efficiency in an EPS is to use flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS). However, an EPS containing multiple FACTS-devices with overlapping areas of influence can lead to negative effects if the reference values they operate around are not updated with sufficient temporal resolution. The reference values are usually set manually by a system operator. The work in this master thesis has investigated how three different reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms can be used to set reference values automatically with higher temporal resolution than a system operator with the aim of increased voltage stability. The three RL algorithms – Q-learning, Deep Q-learning (DQN), and Twindelayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) – were implemented in Python together with a 2-bus EPS test network acting as environment. The 2-bus EPS test network contain two FACTS devices: one for shunt compensation and one for series compensation. The results show that – with respect to reward – DQN was able to perform equally or better than non-RL cases 98.3 % of the time on the simulation test set, while corresponding values for TD3 and Q-learning were 87.3 % and 78.5 % respectively. DQN was able to achieve increased voltage stability on the test network while TD3 showed similar results except during lower loading levels. Q-learning decreased voltage stability on a substantial portion of the test set, even compared to a case without FACTS devices. To help with continued research and possible future real life implementation, a list of suggestions for future work has been established.

Nuclear Safety related Cybersecurity Impact Analysis and Security Posture Monitoring

Gupta, Deeksha 05 April 2022 (has links)
The Electrical Power Systems (EPS) are indispensable for a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). The EPS are essential for plant start-up, normal operation, and emergency conditions. Electrical power systems are necessary not only for power generation, transmission, and distribution but also to supply reliable power for plant operation and control system during safe operation, Design Basis Conditions (DBC) and Design Extension Conditions (DEC). According to IAEA Specific Safety Guide SSG-34, EPS are essentially the support systems of many plant equipment. Electrical system, which supply power to plant systems important to nuclear safety, are essential to the safety of an NPP. In recent years, due to the digitization of Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems, along with their enhanced accuracy, ease of implementing complex functions and flexibility, have been also exposed to sophisticated cyber threats. Despite physical separation and redundant electrical power supply sources, malicious cyber-attacks performed by insiders or outsiders might disrupt the power flow and result in an interruption in the normal operation of an NPP. Therefore, for the uninterrupted operation of a plant, it is crucial to contemplate cybersecurity in the EPS design and implementation. Considering multiple cyber threats, the main objectives of this research work are finding out security vulnerabilities in electrical power systems, simulating potential cyber-attacks and analyzing the impacts of these attacks on the electrical components to protect the electrical systems against these cyber-attacks. An EPS testbed at a small scale was set up, which included commercial I&C and electrical equipment significant for the cybersecurity analysis. The testbed equipment comprises of electrical protection relay (IEC 60255), controller, operating panel, engineering workstation computer, simulation model, etc. to monitor and control the power supply of one or more electrical equipment responsible for a regular operation in an NPP. Simulated cybersecurity attacks were performed using this testbed and the outcomes were examined in multiple iterations, after adding or changing security controls (cybersecurity countermeasures). Analyzing the cybersecurity and performing cyber-attacks on these systems are very advantageous for a real power plant to prepare and protect the plant equipment before any malicious attack happens. This research work conclusively presents cybersecurity analysis, including basic and sophisticated cyber-attack scenarios to understand and improve the cybersecurity posture of EPS in an NPP. The approach was completed by considering the process engineering systems (e.g. reactor core cooling systems) as attack targets and investigating the EPS specific security Defense-in-Depth (DiD) design together with the Nuclear Safety DiD concepts.:CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Motivation 1.2 Technical Background 1.3 Objectives of the Ph.D. Project 1.4 State of the Art in Science and Technology CHAPTER 2 FUNDAMENTALS OF CYBERSECURITY AND ELECTRICAL CONTROL AND PROTECTION CONCEPTS 2.1 Electrical Power System 2.2 Electrical Protection System 2.3 Cyber-Physical System 2.4 Industrial Control System 2.5 Safety I&C and Operational I&C Systems 2.6 Safety Objective Oriented Top-Down Approach 2.7 Cybersecurity Concept 2.8 Threat Identification and Characterization in NPP 2.8.1 Design Basis Threat 2.8.2 Attacker Profile 2.8.1 Reported Real-Life NPP Cyber-Attack Examples 2.9 Security Levels 2.10 Summary CHAPTER 3 CYBER-PHYSICAL PROCESS MODELING 3.1 Introduction 3.2 Single Line Diagrams of Different Operational Modes 3.3 Design 3.4 Block Diagram of Simulink Model 3.5 Implementation of Simulink Blocks 3.5.1 Power Generation 3.5.2 Grid Feed 3.5.3 House Load (Feed Water Pump) 3.6 OPC UA Communication 3.7 Summary CHAPTER 4 CYBER THREAT SCENARIOS FOR EPS 4.1 Introduction 4.2 Cyber-Physical System for EPS 4.3 Cyber Threats and Threat Sources 4.3.1 Cyber Threats 4.3.2 Threat Sources 4.4 Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities 4.4.1 Vulnerabilities in EPS 4.4.2 Vulnerabilities in ICS 4.5 Attacker Modeling 4.6 Basic Cyber Threat Scenarios for EPS 4.6.1 Scenario-1: Physical Access to Electrical Cabinets 4.6.2 Scenario-2: Modification of Digital Protection Devices 4.7 Potential Advanced Cyber Threat Scenarios for EPS 4.7.1 Scenario-1: Alteration of a Set-point of the Protection Relay 4.7.2 Scenario-2: Injection of Malicious Packets 4.7.3 Scenario-3: False Trip Command 4.7.4 Scenario-4: Availability Attack on Protection Relay or SCADA System 4.7.5 Scenario-5: Permanent Damage to Physical Component 4.7.6 Scenario-6: Protocol-wise Attack on Operator Panel 4.8 Threat Scenario for Simulink model 4.9 Summary CHAPTER 5 EPS TESTBED DESCRIPTION 5.1 Introduction 5.2 Basic Industrial Automation Architecture 5.3 Need for Testbeds 5.4 Proposed EPS Testbed 5.4.1 Testbed Architecture 5.4.2 Testbed Implementation 5.5 EPS Physical Testbed Applications 5.5.1 Modeling and Simulation of Power System Faults 5.5.2 Modeling of Cyber-Attacks 5.6 Summary CHAPTER 6 EXPERIMENTAL AND IMPACT ANALYSIS OF CYBER THREAT SCENARIOS 6.1 Outline 6.2 Normal Operation and Control 6.3 Possibilities to Cause Failure in the Primary or Secondary Cooling Systems 6.4 Implementation of Cybersecurity Threat Scenarios 6.4.1 Alteration of a Relay Set-Point during Plant Start-Up Phase 6.4.2 Alteration of a Controller Set-Point during Normal Operation Phase 6.4.3 Availability Attack on Control and Protection System 6.4.4 Severe Damage to a Physical Component due to Overcurrent 6.5 Experimentally Assessed Cyber-attacks 6.6 Summary CHAPTER 7 SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK REFERENCES SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS GLOSSARY

Component reliability importance indices for maintenance optimization of electrical networks

Hilber, Patrik January 2005 (has links)
Maximum asset performance is one of the major goals for electric power system managers. To reach this goal minimal life cycle cost and maintenance optimization become crucial while meeting demands from customers and regulators. One of the fundamental objectives is therefore to relate maintenance and reliability in an efficiently and effectively way, which is the aim of several maintenance methods such as the Reliability Centered Maintenance method (RCM). Furthermore, this necessitates the determination of the optimal balance between preventive and corrective maintenance to obtain the lowest total cost. This thesis proposes methods for defining the importance of individual components in a network with respect to total interruption cost. This is a first step in obtaining an optimal maintenance solution. Since the methods consider several customer nodes simultaneously, they are especially suitable for network structures that serve many purposes/customers e.g. transmission and distribution networks with more than one load point. The major results are three component reliability importance indices, which are applied in two case studies. The first case study is based on a network in the Stockholm area. The second case study is performed for one overhead line system in the rural parts of Kristinehamn. The application studies demonstrate that the indices are possible to implement for existing electrical networks and that they can be used for maintenance prioritization. Consequently these indices constitute a first step in the overall objective of a maintenance optimization method. The computations of the indices are performed both with analytical and simulation based techniques. Furthermore, the indices can be used to calculate the component contribution to the total system interruption cost. The approach developed for the importance indices can be utilized in any multi-state network that can be measured with one performance indicator. / QC 20101130
