It was the purpose of this study to: (1) survey the organization and administration of the program currently used in the Modesto City Schools in interpreting the first grade reading program to parents, (2) identify the characteristics of an effective program for interpreting first grade reading to parents as revealed by the literature, (3) determine the schools’ effectiveness in informing parents of first grade pupils in the area of reading, and (4) offer recommendations for the effective improvement of the Modesto program.

Objectives of this investigation are as follows: (1) To discover what types of degree and credentials are actually held by elementary school vice principals.; (2) To discover the number of years of teaching experience vice principals have had before reaching their present position.; (3) To determine the number of years of experience in the position of vice principal.; (4) To determine whether most vice principals are serving in full-time administrative capacity or are teaching vice principals.; (5) To point up what responsibilities vice principals have in counseling and guidance, administration, supervision, curriculum, and other areas.

Consultants in elementary education use a variety of techniques in their work with teachers to improve instruction in schools. The problem with which this study will be concerned may be stated as follows: What supervisory techniques are employed by San Joaquin County consultants in elementary education in their efforts to improve instruction in schools that receive direct instructional supervision? The specific purposes of this study are: (1) To define the role of the elementary consultants in San Joaquin County.; (2) To identify the supervisory techniques that the consultants employ in their work with teachers.; (3) To survey the use of supervisory techniques with respect to frequency, number and length of supervisory visits, subject matter, categories of instructional responsibilities, experienced and inexperienced teachers, and judged success.; (4) To compare the scope of the supervisory techniques employed by the consultants with that contained in the literature, and with local practice.; (5) To make recommendations for improvements or changes that the study may show to be desirable.

The results of this study should serve to stimulate better teaching methods and to indicate further study toward the improvement of health teaching curriculum. Health instruction has been a part of school curricula for many years. This study will locate the subject area in which health teaching in the Stockton elementary schools. It is not the intent, however, that this report go into the detail of curriculum revision and improvement but that it adhere to the establishment of the present status of health teaching in the elementary schools of the Stockton Unified School District.

Focusing primarily on the ecological relationships of the Joshua tree in Joshua Tree National Park, this teaching unit includes ten pre-visit, in-class lessions; Ranger-led lessons at Joshua Tree National Park Education Center; and ten post-visit, in-class lessons. Lessons are for students in grades three and four and formatted using the breakthrough lesson strategies, based on the constructivist educational theory. The teacher background section addresses classification, structure, range, xerophytic adaptations, ecological relationships, and natural history of the Joshua tree.
