An Exploratory Quantitative And Qualitative Analysis Of Student Performance In Single-gender Classrooms In One Florida Elementary Aschool Sic] 2006-2009

Haynes, Lloyd 01 January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of participation in single-gender classrooms on student performance on the reading and mathematics developmental scale scores (DSS) of third, fourth, and fifth grade students on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). The FCAT is a standardized test that is administered to all grade 3 through grade 10 public school students in the state of Florida and has been used to assess students‟ achievement in reading and mathematics. Students in grades 4, 8, and 10 have also been assessed in science and writing. This study was concerned only with FCAT reading and mathematics scores. The elementary school whose standardized test scores were utilized in this study was comprised of working class families. The standardized test scores were generated by third, fourth, and fifth grade students who were enrolled in (a) single-gender all boys‟ classes, (b) single-gender all girls‟ classes, and (c) mixed-gender or traditional classes that contained both boys and girls. The analysis of data presented in this study was inconclusive with respect to the advantage of the single-gender educational setting over the mixed-gender educational setting. The analysis of the data produced the following results. During the school years 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-2008, and 2008-2009, there were 80 opportunities for a given class type to achieve the highest reading DSS mean, reading DSS median, mathematics DSS mean, or mathematics DSS median. The single-gender boys‟ class achieved the highest DSS 44 times (55%), the mixed-gender classes achieved the highest iv DSS 29 times (36%), and the single-gender girls‟ class achieved the highest DSS 7 times (9%).

The Relationship Between Mandatory 3rd Grade Retention and School Performance in Florida

Unknown Date (has links)
The mixed method study analyzed Florida’s 3rd grade retention policy found in F.S. 1008.25 for its rational and intended purpose. In addition, the study investigated the relationship and hypothetical impact of 3rd grade mandatory retention policy on school grades in elementary schools across the state of Florida. A critical policy analysis used policy document analysis through the lens of critical race theory. Correlation analyses investigated the relationship between the practice of holding students back in grade and the outcomes resulting from high stakes tests moderated by school characteristics of minority rate, free reduced lunch rate and Title I status. The findings show Florida Statute 1008.25 places some schools with high Minority rates, and high FRL rates in a paradoxical situation from which the schools cannot escape. All schools are obligated to enact the terms of education legislation, yet my study demonstrates a negative correlation for the “majority minority” schools (Darling-Hammond, 2010). / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Improving the arithmetic program in Caryville Elementary School

Unknown Date (has links)
The need for arithmetic is well nigh universal. Children and adults are continuously confronted with situations involving "how many" and "how much." The "how-manyness" and "how-muchness" of situations lead to the need for counting and measurement. These needs are conveniently called quantitative needs, needs requiring number meanings and skills. / Typescript. / "January, 1956." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: W. Edwards, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaf 22).

Exploring A Five Factor Mentoring Model Within Elementary Science

Smolik, Joyce M. 01 January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the perceptions of several elementary science mentors and their mentees within one school district based on a fivefactor mentoring model. Utilizing a qualitative methodology in the form of a case study, five mentors and three mentees were interviewed using a structured protocol. From verbatim interview data and field notes, three themes pertaining to the role of the mentor within elementary science emerged as emotional support, technical support, and educative support. Within the five-factor mentoring model, personal attributes suggested notions of support and expert status as critical elements for effective mentoring. The factors of system requirements, pedagogical knowledge, modeling, and feedback were found to be interrelated amongst themselves and with the factor of personal attributes. Effective mentors demonstrated a commitment to the role as well as a flexibility pertaining to role adjustment depending on the context of the mentoring relationship.

A two year study of speech instruction of a group of children in Jackson Heights School

Unknown Date (has links)
Speech is the most common and the most fundamental tool used for communication. It has done more for man's progress than any other single factor. Yet this high development of man has been relatively ignored, and for generations speech instruction has been partially neglected in the elementary schools. / "Presented to the Faculty of the School of Education Florida State University." / "In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Education." / "July, 1949." / Advisor: Dr. Robert C. Moon, Major Professor. / Typescript. / Added title page: A two year study of speech instruction of a group of children in Jackson Heights School, Tampa, Florida. / Includes bibliographical references.
