FormaÃÃo de Portfolio: Uma alternativa nÃo paramÃtrica para o mercado de aÃÃes / Formation of Portfolio: An alternative distribution free for the action market

Ricardo Nelson Vasconcelos 20 April 2004 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is testing an alternative method to create an efficient portfolio, from the technical efficiency ranking of the bonds negociated in BOVESPA from october/1998 to september/2003, using the non parametric model of data envelopment analysis. To the creating of efficient portfolios, is using the Markowitz portfolio theory, comparing to the selecting assets to the composition of best portfolios DEA model from Elton Grubber. To establish the index of efficiency was calculated the average prices quotation of bonds negociated in Bovespa. Comparing the methods, it was verified the best erformance of portfolios using the DEA methodology in relation to the traditional Elton Gruber model to get a best level of return compared to the risk of portfolios.

A New Way of Statecraft: The Career of Elton Mayo and the Development of the Social Sciences in America, 1920-1940

Cullen, David O'Donald, 1951- 08 1900 (has links)
Considered "the father of the science of human relations," Elton Mayo was instrumental in the development of industrial psychology and sociology in America. The career of Elton Mayo and his attraction to influential figures like John D. Rockefeller, Jr., provide a chronological order and interpretive force to understand this development. Mayo's concern about human behavior in the modern industrial world and management's concern over the future of industrial relations, found common ground in their support for the development of a science of human relations. It is not a coincidence then, that the social sciences developed at a time when industrial capitalism shifted its energies from organizing material resources to organizing human resources. The development of modern social science can best be understood, thus, as a phase of the social history of corporate capitalism. The career of Elton Mayo and his attraction to influential figures like John D. Rockefeller, Jr., provide a chronological order and interpretive force to understand this development.

Concurrent with this, monetary authorities seek to reduce circumstantially interest rates that drive the economy in order to to attract new investment in production and still preserve those existing. So even paradoxical, the reduction in interest rates promulgated by the authorities, does not display the same reduction rate from those practiced by the market. This leads individuals, whether or not investment managers to seek alternative investments that provide monetary gains in excess of those which are based on rates set by monetary authorities. Combining the search for resources by organizations and the pursuit of higher monetary gains by investors, the stock market becomes a relevant alternative. In order to achieve the best results in this environment, no need to use templates and other tools that provide the best balance between risk and return given that every investor emits at least some risk aversion. Several instruments are available to perform these relationships, however, many of them not available to the investor on the condition of an individual. And by this point, the model developed by Edwin Elton and Martin Gruber appears as an alternative to any investor, whether by their construction, whether for its operation.

Emotion in the music of Elton John

Meyer, Kati Marie 01 May 2016 (has links)
This research seeks to understand how emotion and pleasure connect with Elton John's music. First, I argue that enjoyment of this music arises in part when on how listener's expectations for harmonic and melodic musical parameters are subverted. This research draws primarily on David Huron's theory of expectation to show how music that deviates from expected norms can be re-evaluated positively. In addition to Huron, I draw on empirical psychology studies that have determined a number of musical correspondences to emotional evocations. Throughout my analyses, I examine how specific chord placement may incite emotion for the typical listener of pop/rock music, and I contend that those specific chords and their placement reliably create emotions that are linked to enjoyment. I also find that elements like melodic contour, repetition, and perceptual salience play a significant role in shaping the listener's reactions to musical stimuli. In the second half of the dissertation, I use empirical research studies to help me address the physiological element of musical listening and enjoyment. I find that listeners use their bodies to entrain to rhythm and react to musical stimuli through laughter, tears, and frisson. Additionally, I investigate the embodiment of music and emotion through the bodily experience of Elton John as a pianist and singer. My analyses explore embodied emotional gestures on the keyboard and how those gestures bear on the listener's emotional connection to the music. Lastly, I speculate about how Elton's vocal gestures influence song expression and emotional evocation. This investigation of bodily reactions to music explores how the body might enjoy certain aspects of music and how bodily enjoyment factors into emotion. Ultimately, I argue that Elton John's music is enjoyable and incites emotion because of violation or validation of harmonic and melodic expectations, and because of emotionally laden bodily and vocal gestures perceived by the listener.

Influência do estresse hídrico, riqueza e abundância de espécies nativas sobre o potencial invasor de uma Poaceae exótica / Influence of desiccation, species richness and species abundance on invasiveness of a exotic Poaceae

MICHELAN, Thaísa Sala 28 May 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-29T16:21:17Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao parte 1 Thaisa Sala Michelan.pdf: 38222 bytes, checksum: 2f8d3a6cb8df8f1c42d663b0b5323ef6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-05-28 / Exotic species represent strong threats to biodiversity. This concern is especially valid in freshwater ecosystems due to their high biodiversity and the highest rates of extinction, compared with terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The increasing habitat complexity provided by the presence of macrophytes may partially explain the high diversity of aquatic ecosystems. However, depending on the density and other particular characteristics of these plant, the diversity may be negatively affected. In this context, Urochloa subquadripara, a species native to Africa, is an aquatic macrophyte weed occurring in various natural and artificial aquatic ecosystems in America. In a small scale, the occurrence of this exotic species increases with reducing natives species richness; however, in a large scale U. subquadripara invades sites with more richness of native species. This controversy is typical of observational studies in invasion biology and it demand experiments to test effects of abiotic and biotic resistance on the invasive potential of this exotic. Accordingly, two experiments were conducted in order to test the following hypotheses: (i) the regeneration and colonization of U. subquadripara decreases with increasing time of exposure to dry, (ii) fragments of the apical part of this species, when compared with those of the basal part, have higher viability and colonization potential (first experiment) and (iii) the invasiveness of aquatic environments by U. subquadripara is negatively influenced by the richness and abundance of native species (second experiment). Our results supported all of our hypotheses: U. subquadripara showed high resistance to desiccation, and the fragments of the apical part were those which had higher viability and colonization potential. In addition, both richness and abundance of native species affected negatively the invasive potential of this exotic macrophyte. The second experiment demonstrated that the effect of richness and abundance limited the development of U. subquadripara, although such effect was not sufficient to prevent the invasion of macrophyte communities by this species. Based on these results, it appears that the population growth of U. subquadripara is greater in disturbed sites, mainly those affected by drought, which in general, have lower abundance and diversity of native species.
