This study aims: a) examine the evolutionary process of political-administrative division of the state of Santa Catarina, in conjunction with the social-space formation; b) Check the Federal and State legislation that regulates this process, particularly the Constitution of 1988, which intensified the subdivision of the states, giving them the prerogative to create additional laws for municipalities. As a contribution to these prerogatives, through the conditions that have settled, it is suggested a new way of analyzing annexation process. For this purpose there had been adopted the following assumptions of theoretical matrix: the category of Milton Santos social-space formation; the Brazilian economic analysis related to the global economic context presented in the work of Ignacio Rangel; the prospect of recovering the relationship between Society and Nature of Armen Mamigonian; the historical and dialectical materialism, as a method of research is in the basic operational tool for understanding the complexity of the political and administrative state of Santa Catarina / Nas últimas décadas o Brasil foi marcado por grande quantidade de emancipações de municípios e, dentro deste contexto, Santa Catarina também passou por acelerado processo de fragmentação do território em unidades político-administrativas. O presente trabalho objetiva: a) analisar o processo evolutivo da divisão político-administrativa do Estado de Santa Catarina, relacionando-o com a formação socioespacial; b) verificar a legislação federal e estadual que regulamentou esse processo, especialmente a Constituição de 1988, que intensificou a fragmentação dos estados, legando-lhes a prerrogativa de criar municípios por leis complementares. A título de contribuição para atender a tais prerrogativas, em vista das condições que se estabeleceram, sugere-se uma nova maneira da análise das anexações. Para esse intento foram adotados os pressupostos das seguintes matrizes teóricas: a categoria de Formação Sócio-Espacial de Milton Santos; a análise econômica brasileira relacionada ao contexto econômico mundial apresentada na obra de Ignácio Rangel; e a perspectiva de recuperar a relação entre Sociedade e Natureza, de Armen Mamigonian. O materialismo histórico-dialético, como método de investigação, constitui-se no instrumento operacional básico para compreensão da complexidade político-administrativa do Estado de Santa Catarina
