Accelerating Java on Embedded GPU

P. Joseph, Iype January 2014 (has links)
Multicore CPUs (Central Processing Units) and GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) are omnipresent in today’s market-leading smartphones and tablets. With CPUs and GPUs getting more complex, maximizing hardware utilization is becoming problematic. The challenges faced in GPGPU (General Purpose computing using GPU) computing on embedded platforms are different from their desktop counterparts due to their memory and computational limitations. This thesis evaluates the performance and energy efficiency achieved by offloading Java applications to an embedded GPU. The existing solutions in literature address various techniques and benefits of offloading Java on desktop or server grade GPUs and not on embedded GPUs. Our research is focussed on providing a framework for accelerating Java programs on embedded GPUs. Our experiments were conducted on a Freescale i.MX6Q SabreLite board which encompasses a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU and a Vivante GC 2000 GPU that supports the OpenCL 1.1 Embedded Profile. We successfully accelerated Java code and reduced energy consumption by employing two approaches, namely JNI-OpenCL, and JOCL, which is a popular Java-binding for OpenCL. These approaches can be easily implemented on other platforms by embedded Java programmers to exploit the computational power of GPUs. Our results show up to an 8 times increase in performance efficiency and 3 times decrease in energy consumption compared to the embedded CPU-only execution of Java program. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work done on accelerating Java on an embedded GPU.

Danielsson, Karin, Wali, Valentina January 2012 (has links)
The thesis comprehends a scientific process of how a specific range of users interact with manuals in a digital environment and how to design embedded help tools for a computer system. The company Aviolinx (in Malmö, Sweden) have developed an airline management system which is used as a case for this study. The problem definition is how embedded help tools can be designed in a computer system, so that the user gets the right information, at the right time, in the right amount. Through benchmarking, help tools on different websites and programs were compared to see how others have done, and to find patterns and differences. The patterns that were found, were compiled into what the authors call de fem P:na (in translation: the five P’s), featured as positioning, punctuality, precision, the outset of use and analogy. Further, the user context is examined and the types of situations that might occur. From the identified patterns and statements from earlier research in the field, paper prototypes were created and tested on Aviolinx’s customers. Based on the results from the tests, two help tools were chosen for further development and a digital prototype was made. It resulted in a help center which functions as a database with information where the user can search for help, in shape of descriptions and step- by-step assistance. As a completing help tool, information icons were applied in specific positions in the interface, to allow the user to view short descriptions of e.g. flight expressions or help within dialog windows. The conclusion of the studies is that user-centered design must form the basis of the design of the embedded help tools, in special purpose software. In this particular user context where critical situations may arise, the focus is on punctuality.

Embedded System Security: A Software-based Approach

Cui, Ang January 2015 (has links)
We present a body of work aimed at understanding and improving the security posture of embedded devices. We present results from several large-scale studies that measured the quantity and distribution of exploitable vulnerabilities within embedded devices in the world. We propose two host-based software defense techniques, Symbiote and Autotomic Binary Structure Randomization, that can be practically deployed to a wide spectrum of embedded devices in use today. These defenses are designed to overcome major challenges of securing legacy embedded devices. To be specific, our proposed algorithms are software- based solutions that operate at the firmware binary level. They do not require source-code, are agnostic to the operating-system environment of the devices they protect, and can work on all major ISAs like MIPS, ARM, PowerPC and X86. More importantly, our proposed defenses are capable of augmenting the functionality of embedded devices with a plethora of host-based defenses like dynamic firmware integrity attestation, binary structure randomization of code and data, and anomaly-based malcode detection. Furthermore, we demonstrate the safety and efficacy of the proposed defenses by applying them to a wide range of real- time embedded devices like enterprise networking equipment, telecommunication appliances and other commercial devices like network-based printers and IP phones. Lastly, we present a survey of promising directions for future research in the area of embedded security.

Avaliação dos requisitos para teste de um sistema operacional embarcado / Testing requirements for an embedded operating system

Beque, Luciéli Tolfo January 2009 (has links)
Society is increasingly dependent on embedded systems, which in most cases operate in an invisible manner to its users. This dependence makes the user vulnerable to risks due to failures that may occur. These failures can cause loss of lives or serious property and financial damage. Because of these facts, the quality of these products becomes a key point to have a stable system, free of errors and with all the features running. This testing is of essential importance to obtain a product with good quality. Due to the high cost of production and energy spent on tests, there is a need for further studies on different methods, to test an embedded system. In this context, this work aims at presenting the initial studies as the testing of the Embedded Operating System. The case study was focused on the exception handling routine of the eCos (Embedded Configurable Operating System), because it has a strong interaction between software and hardware, and this interaction is one of the main challenges encountered in testing embedded software. Therefore, this work aims at taking the first steps towards research related to testing an Embedded Operating System. After analyzing the experiments, it was noted that the main feature of the Embedded Operating System, eCos, the configurability, is an extra point of difficulty for the tests. It requires a detailed study of the code eCos, which is completely general, before the planning of tests, and could be spent much time in this activity. Another point is that the test becomes totally dependent on hardware. However, the experimental results presented for the case study of this study showed satisfactory.

LabVIEW application with embedded Lua scripting for a laser based measuring machine

Coetzee, A., Van Niekerk, T.I. January 2013 (has links)
Published Article / This paper presents the work on the development of software for an industrial laser based measuring machine. The goal being not only for a working application, but also to optimise the development process and ease future maintenance of the software. LabVIEW with its graphical method of programming allows engineers to easily create large software applications to control industrial processes and machines. This software if not properly designed can lead to stability and maintenance problems. The experience gained from developing, maintaining and improving a LabVIEW application for a laser measuring machine, results in the integration of the Lua scripting language into LabVIEW. It is shown how the embedded Lua allows the LabVIEW software application for the machine to be structured for simpler development and maintenance.
