Character at Work: A Virtues Approach to Creativity and Emotion Regulation

<p>The study of character strengths is a promising new approach available to positive psychology in its campaign to focus on the positive aspects of people, work and society, and encourage individuals to thrive in all aspects of their lives. Character strengths have been linked to satisfaction with life, but no previous work has investigated <em>how</em> these positive aspects of individuals lead to greater life satisfaction. The current work investigates how different combinations of character strengths, termed strength profiles, predict the use of two emotion regulation strategies, cognitive reappraisal and emotional suppression. Also investigated was the ability of these strength profiles to predict associative creativity, positive and negative affect, and life satisfaction.</p> <p>A sample of 205 students was used. Participants completed the Virtues in Action survey of character strengths, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, Satisfaction with Life Scale and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. An experimental design was employed to investigate the effects of positive and negative emotions on performance on a task requiring associative creativity, the Remote Associates Test. Furthermore, the relationship between character strengths and emotion regulation strategy was investigated.</p> <p>Character strengths predicted cognitive reappraisal as a preferred method of emotion regulation. Character strengths also positively predicted positive affect, negatively predicted negative affect, and were positively associated with satisfaction with life. Additionally, cognitive reappraisal mediated the relationship between a profile designed to up-regulate positive emotions and self-reports of positive emotions.</p> <p>Results were compared for the proposed strength profiles and Peterson and Seligman's (2004) original six virtues. Differences in predictive ability between the strength profiles and virtues are highlighted. The Role of Emotion Regulation in the Relationship Between Social Anxiety and Depression: A Daily Diary Study

Social anxiety and depression are commonly comorbid, and together they result in greater functional impairment and a poorer prognosis than when either condition occurs alone. Although the onset of social anxiety precedes the development of depression in the large majority of comorbid cases, little research has directly examined factors that contribute to the occurrence of depression in individuals with social anxiety. Theoretical models implicate emotion and emotion regulation in the development and maintenance of internalizing disorders. Emotion regulation research has predominantly focused on expressive suppression (ES), the suppression of outward emotion, and cognitive reappraisal (CR), the modification of cognitions to manage emotion. Social anxiety and depression are both characterized by maladaptive patterns of emotion regulation, exhibiting an overreliance on ES and an underutilization of CR. The present study investigated the role of emotion regulation, specifically ES and CR, in the relationship between social anxiety and depression over time. Our primary aim was to evaluate ES and CR, separately, as mediators of the relationship between social anxiety and depression. Our secondary aim was to evaluate additional mediating and/or moderating effects of related variables (i.e., relationship quality, positive and negative affect, and reward sensitivity). Our final exploratory aim was to evaluate whether emotion regulation (i.e., ES and CR) for positive emotions differs from emotion regulation for negative emotions in the relationships proposed by our primary and secondary aims. Undergraduate participants (N=137) completed an in-person laboratory session (i.e., baseline), followed by a 14-day daily diary period. During the daily diary period, participants reported on their daily experiences of social anxiety, depressed mood, emotion, emotion regulation, and relationship quality. Approximately two weeks after the end of the daily diary period (i.e., four weeks after baseline), participants completed a final in-person laboratory session (i.e., endpoint). Multilevel modeling was used to analyze observation-level data over the two-week diary period, and bootstrapping methods were used for person-level analyses over the full four-week study period. Daily diary analyses failed to support the hypothesized mediation models. Average social anxiety across the daily diary period was positively associated with daily depressed mood, but observation-level social anxiety was not. Exploratory analyses revealed affect-specific effects of emotion regulation, such that higher perceived success in ES (i.e., daily ES self-efficacy) for positive affect and less frequent use of CR (i.e., daily CR frequency) for negative affect significantly predicted higher next-day depressed mood. Person-level analyses across the four-week study period yielded some support for our hypotheses, in that ES frequency and positive affect acted as sequential mediators of the relationship between social anxiety and depression. Higher social anxiety predicted more frequent ES, which predicted lower positive affect, which then predicted higher depression. However, the mediation model was no longer significant after controlling for baseline depression. Our results highlight the role of emotion dysregulation in predicting depression and provide initial support for the mediating effects of ES and CR in the relationship between social anxiety and depression. These findings also emphasize the importance of investigating affect-specific effects, with particular attention paid to emotion regulation for positive affect and its role in the co-occurrence of social anxiety and depression. Future research would benefit from longitudinal studies across longer time periods and examining these relationships within a clinical sample. / Psychology

A Person-Centered Approach to Understanding Women's Decision to Fake Orgasm

Studies suggest that nearly two-thirds of women fake or have faked orgasm, yet few researchers have explicitly examined this phenomenon. Previous studies have identified some group differences between women who fake orgasm and those who do not on dimensions of sexual experience, emotion regulation, intimacy, relationship status, and sexual functioning. To date, research into this phenomenon has relied solely on variable-centered analyses (e.g., exploratory factor analysis, correlation, and regression). This study used a person-centered approach (i.e., latent class analysis; LCA) to explore differences in women's motives across individuals, using scores from the Faking Orgasm Scale. A 5-class model was determined to be most interpretable and the best fitting to the data. Classes included low, moderate, and high frequency faking orgasm, partner-focused faking orgasm, and pleasure-focused faking orgasm. These classes were then compared on dimensions of sexual functioning, intimacy, and emotion regulation, as well as demographic variables (e.g., age, length of relationship, number of sexual partners). Significant differences were found in sexual desire, sexual activity, and orgasmic consistency, but not in sexual satisfaction. Significant differences were also evidenced in intimacy, general level of emotion dysregulation, and across various dimensions of emotion regulation. No differences across classes were revealed on age, length of relationship, or number of sexual partners. These findings can serve as the foundation for further exploration into understanding women's various styles of interacting sexually with a partner and may have implications for couples therapy, sex therapy, and individual interventions for women struggling with physical and/or emotional intimacy with a partner. / Psychology

Executive Control Function and Emotion Regulation Processes in the Developmental Pathway from Childhood Maltreatment to Alcohol Use Problems

Experiencing maltreatment during childhood has been implicated in numerous and diverse developmental impairments, including problematic alcohol use and alcohol use disorders. However, little research examines the processes by which childhood maltreatment confers risk for alcohol use problems, or potential risk or protective factors in the emergence of problematic alcohol use among individuals experiencing childhood maltreatment. To address this gap, the current study investigated executive cognitive functions and emotion regulation as probable risk or protective factors linking childhood maltreatment and subsequent problematic alcohol use, given that deficits in both executive cognitive functions and emotion regulation are associated with maltreatment and problematic alcohol use. Participants were drawn from a longitudinal sample of children at both high and low risk for substance dependence, based on their paternal history of psychiatric or substance use disorder (N = 475; 70% male; 74% Caucasian, 23% African American, 3% multiracial; M = 11.38±.93 years at Time 1). Analyses involved both person- and variable-centered approaches. The person-centered approach identified groups of individuals based on maltreatment experiences, executive cognitive functions, and emotion regulation, and then examined whether and to what extent these classes differed on concurrent and longitudinal problematic alcohol use. Findings suggested that there are distinct risk groups consisting of abuse/neglect, neglect only, executive control function deficits, and emotion regulation deficits. These groups did not differ on levels of alcohol use, counter to prediction. Variable-centered approaches involved a longitudinal examination of pathways from childhood maltreatment to alcohol use frequency and symptoms of alcohol use disorder that included executive cognitive functioning and emotion regulation. Results of these variable-centered structural equation modeling analyses indicated that maltreatment, executive control function, and emotion regulation concurrently predicted problematic alcohol use. Investigating the current models allows for a better understanding of pathways to alcohol use in both adolescence and adulthood, which has implications for prevention and intervention, particularly in identifying groups at highest risk for problematic alcohol use outcomes and in treatment selection or modification. / Psychology

ADHD and Co-occurring Psychological Symptoms: Emotion Regulation and Parenting as Potential Moderators

A multitude of research demonstrates that ADHD is associated with negative psychological correlates and outcomes among children, such as academic difficulties and peer relationship problems. Youth with ADHD also experience high rates of comorbidity or co-occurring conditions, including mood, anxiety, oppositional defiant, and conduct disorders. However, few studies have investigated the development of co-occurring psychological symptoms among youth with ADHD over time and across different developmental periods. Shared risk factors likely contribute to the development of ODD, CD, anxiety, and depression among youth with ADHD. Emotion regulation and parenting style may confer risk or resilience for the development of co-occurring symptoms, but research is wanting. The current study examined an existing sample of youth who were recruited at age 10-12 and were followed at age 12-14 and 16. Analyses aimed to (a) identify subgroups of youth varying in type and levels of ADHD and co-occurring symptoms at three different time points using latent class analyses, (b) examine stability of membership and transitions to classes that differ in levels of ADHD and co-occurring symptoms using latent transition analyses, and (c) investigate emotion regulation and parenting style as predictors of stability and transitions among classes. Results revealed different patterns of ADHD and co-occurring symptoms, including a Low Symptoms class at each time point. Classes of youth with ADHD+Externalizing problems and ADHD+Internalizing problems emerged at ages 10-12 and 12-14. At age 16, two classes with qualitatively and quantitatively different externalizing and internalizing symptoms were identified. Latent transition analyses revealed transitions into the Low Symptoms class from each time point, but also stability and transitions to other symptomatic classes. Predictor analyses indicated that emotion regulation and parenting style were associated with transitions among and stability within classes, but findings were dependent on whether classes were defined primarily by co-occurring externalizing or internalizing symptoms. Results of the present study indicate that children with ADHD are likely to exhibit a range of psychological symptoms, but the frequency and quality of co-occurring symptoms may change over time. Emotion regulation and parenting may be potential targets for enhanced interventions among youth with ADHD with and without co-occurring symptoms. / Psychology

Cultural Factors in the Dysregulation of Shame and Embarrassment: Emotions in Social Anxiety and Taijin Kyofusho

The present study examined the role of emotion regulation (ER) in individuals who endorsed social anxiety symptoms found in taijin kyofusho (TKS) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) in a young adult sample. More specifically, the study sought to examine the role of self-conscious emotions of shame and embarrassment with respect to TKS and SAD. Participants were administered a series of questionnaires during the first phase of the study and, during the second phase, a diagnostic clinical interview and additional questionnaires were administered along with an experimental social evaluative task and recording of electrical cardiac impulses. Descriptively, social anxiety symptoms were expected to be associated with less adaptive ER strategies. Additionally, differences between individuals who endorsed TKS and SAD symptoms were expected such that TKS would be associated more so with shame and SAD with embarrassment. It was hypothesized that ER would mediate the relationship between embarrassment and shame and their hypothesized anxiety counterparts (SAD or TKS). Findings revealed an association between shame and TKS, and embarrassment and SAD. However, less adaptive ER strategies were not related to social anxiety symptoms and ER did not mediate the relationship between self-conscious emotions and social anxiety. The present findings suggest that shame and embarrassment can play a role in the clinical manifestations of SAD and TKS. Implications regarding the role of these emotions and ER were examined. / Ph. Integrating emotion and cognition in the pathway from adolescent religiousness to risk taking

Existing literature has demonstrated an association between higher adolescent religiousness and lower risk taking via higher self-regulation. However, the present study uniquely sought to elucidate whether particular dimensions of self-regulation (i.e., emotion regulation, effortful control, and executive function) play differential roles in establishing this relation. It was hypothesized in longitudinal analyses over one year that higher religiousness would be associated with higher emotion regulation, which in turn was hypothesized to be associated with higher effortful control and executive function, and, subsequently, higher effortful control and higher executive function to be associated with higher risk taking. Participants included 157 adolescents at Time 1 (mean age = 14 years, 52% male) and 140 adolescents returned for Time 2 (mean age = 15 years, 53% male). Structural equation models, including confirmatory factor analysis and path models tested significant individual paths and mediation via bias corrected bootstrapping supported hypotheses across multiple alternative models, except for hypotheses regarding mediation analyses, which received limited empirical support. The findings highlight that higher religiousness is associated with higher emotion regulation and, in turn, higher emotion regulation is associated with higher executive function and effortful control which, subsequently, are associated with lower adolescent risk taking. In light of this, religiousness is understood as a contextual protective factor for adolescents and intervention strategies targeting emotion regulation, executive function, and effortful control may be associated with lower adolescent risk taking. / Ph.
