Knowledge and experiences of mineworkers on the prevention of HIV/AIDS in a mining community of Ghana

Thesis (Master of Nursing)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2019 / The HIV/AIDS epidemic is a public health concern worldwide. An estimated 36.9 million people are living with HIV/AIDS with about two million new infections annually. An approximate ten million people have died of AIDS-related causes since the beginning of the epidemic. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is the most affected sub-region, with approximately 71% of all People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHWA) from mid-2016. In SSA, the epidemic has become a socioeconomic burden on developing countries. The literature review established a high prevalence of HIV/STIs among mineworkers and in mining communities, despite the increase in education on HIV/AIDS prevention in the media and public fora. The aim of the study was to explore and describe the knowledge and experiences of mineworkers on the prevention of HIV/AIDS in a mining community in Ghana. An exploratory, descriptive and contextual design was applied. Data collection was done using semi-structured individual interviews. The population in this study was mineworkers who come from other districts and regions in Ghana to live in the catchment community without their families because of employment. Seventeen (17) participants were interviewed, after purposive sampling was done. Interview transcriptions and manual coding were done by the researcher using Microsoft Word. The raw data was coded and sorted into themes and sub-themes and analysed by using Braun and Clarke's six-phase framework for thematic analysis. The Health Belief Model (HBM), a theoretical framework was applied to the study to predict and explain whether a person will perform an action necessary for preventing a HIV/AIDS or not. Findings from this study revealed that although there has been an increase in education on HIV/AIDS across the country and through workplace HIV/AIDS programmes, mineworkers lacked knowledge of HIV/AIDS, as they still had misconceptions about HIV/AIDS, especially regarding the mode of transmission and preventive measures. A strong recommendation was made to embark on a continuous and intensive HIV/AIDS education programme that will be focused on the knowledge needs of mineworkers to dismiss the misconceptions and improve their knowledge level. This will empower them to know the benefits of prevention and ultimately change their behaviour.

Sustainability performance and financial performance in selected Johannesburg Stock of Exchange listed companies

(Accounting)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / The corporate sustainability performance (CSP) journey is coupled with many complex issues which have subsequently eliminated the boundary between legal and discretionary social practices. In South African JSE SRI listed organisations, sustainability performance programmes are regarded as tools for redressing socioeconomic disparities. However, the influence of sustainability performance on organisations‟ financial performance becomes a vital notion in contemporary sustainable development debates as evidenced by extensive inconclusive literature that has its long roots in the research field. The aim of the study is to examine how corporate sustainability performance influences organisations‟ financial performance which is return on assets (ROA). Through content analysis, secondary data were extracted from annual integrated reports of 175 purposively sampled South African organisations registered on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE SRI Index) for the years 2009-2019. The study employs cross-sectional time series feasible generalised least regression (FGLS) to test the correlation between the dimensions of corporate sustainability performance and return on assets as a proxy for organisational financial performance. The study results confirm that employees‟ health and safety sustainability performance programmes have a significant and positive impact on return on assets, whereas CSP programmes in community social activities have a positive and significant influence on return on assets. An insignificant relationship exists between Eco-investments (socially responsible investments) and return on assets (ROA). The study concluded that there is a significant association between CSP and ROA. The findings further confirm that control variables (leverage ratio, current ratio, total assets turnover, operating profit margin and price earnings ratio) have an effect on the correlation between CSP and ROA. The results have potential implications for corporate sustainability performance policy makers in South Africa, and contribute to corporate sustainability performance/organisations‟ financial performance debate. The study further stresses that continuous review of CSP policies is imperative to ensure that sustainable business practices are achieved.

Sense of coherence, affective wellbeing and burnout in a higher education institution call centre

The objective of this study was to: (1) assess the overall wellness climate profile of a sample of higher education call centre employees for national benchmarking purposes; (2) explore the relationship between the participants‟ sense of coherence, affective wellbeing and burnout; and (3) determine how the participants differ regarding these variables in terms of socio-demographic contextual factors such as gender, race, age, and marital status. The South African Employee Health and Wellness Survey was used as a measuring instrument. Compared to the national norm, the results indicated a risky wellness climate reflecting a burnout propensity, lower morale (affective wellbeing) and lower resilience (sense of coherence). Significant relations existed between the participants‟ sense of coherence, affective wellbeing and burnout levels. Significant differences regarding these variables were also detected between males and females and the various marital status groups regarding the participants‟ sense of coherence, affective wellbeing and burnout. The findings of this study contributed new knowledge that may be used to inform employee wellness programmes within a higher education call centre environment. "A systemic exploration of the challenges faces by employer and employee when the later is undergoing active cancer treatment"

The purpose of the research was to explore the challenges faced by both employer and employee when the later undergoes active cancer treatment from a systemic perspective. A qualitative research was conducted using a case study of six sessions with both employer and employee. The study revealed that the employer and employee defined their relationship and boundaries as a system. The research project made a great impact on the researchers’ map regarding cancer or any other symptom, the person with cancer and the employer. In the researcher’s old map, before the research project, cancer implied a very threatening disease which rendered both the employer and the employee helpless and powerless. Through the research project the researcher discovered the significance of not having preconceived ideas as according to this study both the employer and employee had the freedom to punctuate their challenges in relation to the latter undergoing active treatment. / Social Work / M. This study analysed the business response to HIV/AIDS by establishments in the catering industry in Zimbabwe. The case study focused on establishments in Harare using a questionnaire with both open-ended and closed questions for data collection. The results of the study acknowledged the impact of HIV/AIDS on human resources capital and the business. The study also highlighted the need to conduct an assessment of the status of HIV/AIDS in the industry and its impact on both people and business. The epidemic was also acknowledged as a threat to the industry (both workforce and the business)hence the need for business response. However, the study revealed that the current business response was very minimal, erratic and uncoordinated. The study also highlighted the discriminatory practices in the catering industry especially in the treatment of persons infected with HIV. The study revealed the urgent need to put in place effective response to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS in the catering industry. Recommendations have been made to address HIV/AIDS in the workplace. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie studie was om te bepaal tot watter mate die voedselverskaffingsindustrie in Zimbabwe as besigheid gereageer het teenoor MIV/Vigs en wat hulle besigheidsrespons was. Resultate van die studie dui aan dat hierdie besigheidsektor wel erkenning gee aan die negatiewe impak wat MIV/Vigs op menslike hulpbronne . MIV/Vigs word as ‘n bedreiging erken en die negatiewe impak daarvan op besighede word deeglik besef. Die studie dui egter ook aan dat die huidige respons van die voedselverskaffingsektor minimaal, ongereeld en ongekoordineerd is. Die studie wys ook daarop dat daar nog steeds baie hoogs-diskriminerende praktyke binne die industrie bestaan, veral ten opsigte van pasiënte wat tans op behandeling is vir MIV-verwante siektetoestande. Die studie wys op die noodsaaklikheid van ‘n doeltreffende besigheidsrepons binne die voedselverskaffingsindustrie en voorstelle word gemaak vir die beter bestuur van MIV/Vigs binne hierdie bedryfsektor.

Business Administration / This is a study about perceptions, attitudes and behaviours held by employees of the South African Department of Defence (DOD) on the fairness of the Tobacco Control Policy (TCP) at the workplace in DOD. It was based on a stratified random sample of n=125 individuals selected from 1, 000 employees. The study was also predominantly quantitative in nature, where data was collected with a pre-tested and validated structured questionnaire. Pearsons chi-square tests of association and factor analysis were used for identifying factors that significantly influenced perception on the TCP adopted by DOD. The Cronbach Alpha test and face validation were used for ensuring internal consistency and validity.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The research focused on the knowledge of occupational safety by hospital managers towards HIV and other blood borne pathogens transmission in Abakaliki region in eastern Nigeria. These pathogens are easily transmissible by needle sticks and other occupational accidents. It is important to identify factors that pre-expose hospital cleaners to occupational risk exposure that can lead to the transmission of HIV, HBV and HCV. The research was conducted in 10 different hospitals. A total of 90 questionnaires were administered to the hospital cleaners that volunteered to participate in the research and 68 questionnaires were returned representing 75.6% of the total questionnaires. The mean age and standard deviation of the respondents in this study was 38.6 + or – 5.4 years. The researcher conducted a semi-structured interview with all the 10 hospital managers involved with the study and the interviews showed there was a need for an organised training on hospital work and occupational hazards, risk exposures and precautions. The questionnaires showed the knowledge of hospital cleaners on occupational safety and it was observed the majority of the hospital cleaners were not aware of post exposure prophylaxis for HIV. The workers relatively had good practices put in place to prevent HIV, HBV and HCV transmission but majority of them had not received HBV vaccine due to lack of awareness and availability. There was a significant positive correlation between the knowledge of the health workers and HIV transmission and the practice put in place by health workers to prevent HIV transmission (P<0.05). This implies as the knowledge of the health workers about HIV transmission increases, the practice put in place by health workers to prevent HIV transmission and Hepatitis B&C increases. Therefore there is need for continuous training on blood borne pathogens transmission such as HIV transmission in the hospitals and its routes of transmission.
